A sealant applicator suitable for dispensing a coagulable sealant, for example a two-component fibrin sealant mixed in the applicator, employs impulse clearing to remove residual coagulated or coagulating material from the dispensing pathway and mixing chamber, if present. Impulses may be generated by manual application of a clearing member such as a plunger which can enter into the dispensing pathway to engage, dislodge and discharge residuals or can generate a gas impulse to impact the residuals to similar effect. A clearing valve having a clearing port can be operated by movement of the clearing member to provide access to the dispensing pathway.

A method for determining blood flow rate in a vessel which communicates blood between two locations of a patient, the method comprising: diverting blood from the vessel at a diversion point to obtain a flow of diverted blood in a conduit, wherein the vessel has a blood flow rate QAupstream from the diversion point and a blood flow rate QDdownstream from the diversion point; determining a flow rate QBof the diverted blood through the conduit; generating at least one signal that is a function of QDwithout requiring a cross-sectional area of the vessel, wherein QDdepends on QBand QA; and processing the at least one signal and QBto obtain QA. 21. The method of claim 20, further comprising generating at least one signal correlated with the upstream flow rate QA. 22. The method of claim 20, wherein diverting blood from the vessel includes diverting blood from a hemodialysis access. 23. The method of claim 20, further comprising pumping the diverted blood through the conduit. 24. The method of claim 20, further comprising returning the diverted blood to the vessel via a return point. 25. The method of claim 24, wherein determining a flow rate through the conduit includes determining a flow rate through an external dialysis circuit. 26. The method of claim 20, wherein generating the at least one signal comprises generating the at least one signal using an ultrasonic sensor. 27. The method of claim 20, wherein the at least one signal represents a time-averaged mean Doppler velocity. 28. The method of claim 20, wherein determining a flow rate through the conduit includes determining a flow rate through an intravascular catheter. 29. The method of claim 20, further comprising generating at least one signal correlated with the conduit flow rate QB.
