The present invention relates to a universal advertising and payment system for networking, monitoring and controlling electronic commerce and vending equipment. The system can effectuate electronic commerce and interactive advertising at the point of sale. Vending equipment includes copiers, phones, facsimile machines, printers, data-ports, laptop print stations, notebook computers, palmtop computers (PALM PILOT), microfiche devices, projectors, scanners, cameras, modems, communication access, personal computers (PC), PC terminals (NET PC), and network computers (NC). Vending equipment can be networked to each other through a first network, programmable and accessible by a PC, server, point of sale (POS) system, property or management information system (PMS/MIS), and networked to a second network. The first network and second network can be the same network. Complete control of a vending machine's functionality including usage, control, diagnostics, inventory, and marketing data capture can be effectuated locally or by remote connection to the network. Remote connection to the network includes Internet type connections, telecommunication (telephone, ISDN, ADSL), VSAT satellite, and other wire and wireless transmission. The present invention allows a user to obtain authorization for use, pay for products and services, and conFigure the vending equipment with a smart card, or magnetic card (card). Magnetic cards include smart card, credit card, debit card, pre-paid, automated teller machine (ATM) or other bank or private issued card. Users can also use a hotel room key/card or other insertion type-identifying device. Additionally, biometric identification such as hand writing, voice, finger, hand, or eye (iris scan) can be utilized to control the system.

A method of collecting entered customer data and transaction data corresponding to a customer by a public access electronic commerce terminal, said method comprising the steps of: a) receiving said transaction data at said public access electronic commerce terminal; b) prompting said customer to enter said entered customer data into said public access electronic commerce terminal; c) transmitting said transaction data and said entered customer data to said remote location; d) processing said entered customer data; e) interchanging said entered customer data with pre-existing customer data based on a dynamic information interchange; f) processing said transaction data with said pre-existing customer data; g) determining whether a period of non-use of said electronic commerce system has occurred; h) determining if said period of non-use exceeds a predetermined time period; i) generating an error message based on said determination of step h); j) determining if at least one of a system limit and an authorization limit of said user is at least one of reached and exceeded; k) selectively reauthorizing said user based on said determination in step j); and l) reprocessing said transaction data and said pre-existing customer data based on said reauthorization. 2. A method in accordance with claim 1, wherein the step of processing said entered customer data includes the step of routing said entered customer data to any desired remote location or database. 3. A method of collecting entered customer data and transaction data corresponding to a customer by a public access electronic commerce system, said method comprising the steps of: a) prompting a user to enter said entered customer data into said public access electronic commerce terminal; b) transmitting said entered customer data to a remote location; c) determining whether a dynamic information interchange of said entered customer data is required; d) dynamically interchanging said entered customer data with pre-existing customer data based on said determination in step c); e) determining whether a period of non-use of said electronic commerce system has occurred; f) determining if said period of non-use exceeds a predetermined time period; g) generating an error message based on said determination of step f); h) determining if at least one of a system limit and an authorization limit of said user is at least one of reached and exceeded; i) selectively reauthorizing said user based on said determination step h); and j) reprocessing said transaction data and said pre-existing customer data based on said reauthorization. 4. A method according to claim 3, further comprising the step of: e) processing one of said customer data and said further data based on said dynamic information interchange. 5. The method in accordance with claim 1, further comprising the step of: m) transmitting said error message to a universal server. 6. The method in accordance with claim 5, further comprising the steps of: n) determining a severity level of said error based on said error message; and o) transmitting a service message to a remote service location to correct said error based on said severity level. 7. The method in accordance with claim 3, further comprising the step of: k) transmitting said error message to a universal server. 8. The method in accordance with claim 7, further comprising the steps of: l) determining a severity level of said error based on said error message; and m) transmitting a service message to a remote service location to correct said error based on said severity level.
