Method and apparatus for promoting by light irradiation the germination of seeds and the growth of plants generated by the seeds. The seeds to be treated are irradiated with radiation that is a simulation of the solar visible spectrum. The radiation may have a wavelength range from about 400 to about 700 nm. The irradiating light may be pulsed, for example at a frequency from about 10 to 150 pulses per minute, each pulses having a duration from 0.1 to 0.9 seconds and the intervals between pulses having a duration about from 0.1 to 6.0 seconds. The seeds may be cooled while irradiating them, such as to maintain the seeds at temperatures not exceeding 35° C. Cooling the seeds may be carried out by means of a stream of gas.

A method for switching between burst and pipeline modes of operation in a memory, comprising: maintaining a first enabling signal in an active state, the first enabling signal being an address-strobe signal; maintaining an external mode select signal to select a burst mode of operation; receiving an initial external address; cycling a second enabling signal multiply between inactive and active; generating an internal address on a cycle of the second enabling signal based on the initial external address; changing the external mode select signal to select a pipeline mode of operation while maintaining the first enabling signal in an active state; and receiving an external address on each cycle of the second enabling signal. 12. A method for switching between burst and pipeline modes of operation in a memory, comprising: maintaining a first enabling signal in an active state, the first enabling signal being an address-strobe signal; maintaining an internal mode select signal to select a burst mode of operation; receiving an initial external address; cycling a second enabling signal multiply between inactive and active; generating an internal address on a cycle of the second enabling signal based on the initial external address; changing the internal mode select signal to select a pipeline mode of operation while maintaining the first enabling signal in an active state; and receiving an external address on each cycle of the second enabling signal. 13. A method for switching between burst and pipeline modes of operation in a memory, comprising: maintaining a first enabling signal in an active state, the first enabling signal being an address-strobe signal; maintaining a mode select signal to select a burst mode of operation; receiving an initial external address; cycling a second enabling signal multiply between inactive and active; generating an internal address on a cycle of the second enabling signal based on the initial external address; and switching the mode of operation to a pipeline mode on successive cycles of the second enabling signal while maintaining the first enabling signal in the active state. 14. The method of claim 13, wherein switching the mode of operation to a pipeline mode further comprises changing the mode select signal to select a pipeline mode of operation while maintaining the first enabling signal in an active state. 15. A method for switching between burst and pipeline modes of operation in a memory, comprising: maintaining a first enabling signal in an active state, the first enabling signal being an address-strobe signal ; maintaining a mode select signal to select a burst mode of operation; receiving an initial external address; cycling a second enabling signal multiply between inactive and active; generating an internal address on a cycle of the second enabling signal based on the initial external address; changing the mode select signal to switch the mode of operation to a pipeline mode on successive cycles of the second enabling signal while maintaining the first enabling signal in the active state; and receiving an external address on each cycle of the second enabling signal. 16. A method for switching between modes of operation, comprising: maintaining a first enabling signal in an active state, the first enabling signal being an address-strobe signal; maintaining a mode select signal to select a first mode of operation; receiving an initial external address; cycling a second enabling signal multiply between inactive and active; generating an internal address on a cycle of
