An exercise and performance evaluation apparatus including a revolving belt or other engagement surface on which a subject can perform forward, backward, or sideways bipedal locomotion or other exercise movement, a means for securing the position of the subject relative to the frame of the apparatus

An exercise and performance evaluation apparatus including a revolving belt or other engagement surface on which a subject can perform forward, backward, or sideways bipedal locomotion or other exercise movement, a means for securing the position of the subject relative to the frame of the apparatus, a means for measuring the force applied by the subject to the engagement surface, and a means for monitoring and/or controlling the velocity of the engagement surface. Securing the subject relative to the frame of the apparatus facilitates monitoring velocity as a function of time. Processing of velocity and force as a function of time allows for recording and analysis of data such as the maximal exertion force-velocity curve. Force-velocity-duration data for exertions is analyzed in terms of an intensity function. The apparatus allows exertions to be performed throughout, and outside, the first quadrant of a force-velocity-duration space.

A method for determining a constant-intensity curve in the force-velocity plane for a first intensity for a subject performing a complex-movement exercise against an engagement surface, such that a velocity with which said engagement surface is moved is positively related to a force applied to said engagement surface by said subject, comprising the steps of: determining a number of force-velocity value pairs at which said subject is performing an intensity of exercise at said intensity value; and calculating said constant-intensity curve as a best-fit force-velocity curve through said force-velocity value pairs. 2. The method of claim 1 wherein said determining of said force-velocity value pairs is performed when said subject is not fatigued. 3. The method of claim 1 wherein said complex-movement exercise is bipedal locomotion, and said engagement surface is a conveyor belt. 4. The method of claim 1 wherein said first intensity is approximately a maximum intensity which said subject can provide. 5. The method of claim 1 wherein said constant-intensity curve, when plotted on a graph having a force axis and a velocity axis, crosses both said force axis and said velocity axis. 6. The method of claim 5 wherein said constant-intensity curve is concave upwards for positive values of said velocity and said force. 7. The method of claim 5 wherein a derivative of said constant-intensity curve has undulations in a derivative of said constant-intensity curve for positive values of said velocity and said force. 8. An apparatus for determining a constant-intensity curve in a force-velocity plane for a first intensity for a subject performing a complex-movement exercise, comprising: an exercise apparatus having an engagement surface for engagement with said subject and a resistance control, such that a velocity with which said engagement surface is moved is positively related to a force applied to said engagement surface by said subject and inversely related to a resistance provided by said resistance control; means for determining a number of force-velocity value pairs at which said subject is performing an intensity of exercise at said intensity value; and means for calculating said constant-intensity curve as a best-fit force-velocity curve through said force-velocity value pairs.
