A Robust Model-Free Adaptive controller is disclosed for effectively controlling simple to complex systems including industrial processes, equipment, facilities, devices, engines, robots, vehicles, and appliances. Without the need of re-designing a controller or re-tuning the controller parameters, the inventive controller is able to provide a wide robust range and keep the system under automatic control during normal and extreme operating conditions when there are significant disturbances or changes in system dynamics. Because of its simplicity and capability, the control system is useful for building flexible and adaptive production systems to fulfill the on demand manufacturing needs of the new e-commerce environment.

A method as set forth in claim 2 wherein said step of moving the footrest relative to the support surface includes moving the footrest along a linear path relative to the support surface. 4. A method as set forth in claim 1 wherein said step of moving the footrest relative to the support surface from a first position to a second position includes transmitting force from the patient's foot to the footrest to move the footrest. 5. A method as set forth in claim 1 wherein said step of moving the support surface relative to the chamber of the imaging unit with a patient lying on his or her back on the support surface includes moving the support surface and footrest together relative to the chamber of the imaging unit. 6. A method as set forth in claim 1 wherein said step of supporting the patient on a support surface with the patient lying on his or her back includes supporting the patient on a horizontal support surface. 7. A method as set forth in claim 1 wherein the footrest includes a portion which is connected with and is disposed adjacent to a bottom of the patient's foot during movement of the footrest between the first position and the second position, said step of moving the footrest relative to the support surface includes changing an angular orientation of the portion of the footrest which is connected with the bottom of the patient's foot relative to the support surface. 8. A method as set forth in claim 1 wherein said step of imaging the knee joint in the patient's leg while the footrest is in the first position includes retaining the footrest against movement from the first position under the influence of force transmitted from the leg of the patient to the footrest, said step of imaging the knee joint in the patient's leg while the footrest is in the second position includes retaining the footrest against movement from the second position under the influence of force transmitted from the leg of the patient to the footrest. 9. A method as set forth in claim 1 wherein said step of moving the footrest from a first position to a second position relative to the support surface includes moving the knee joint in the patient's leg relative to the support surface. 10. A method as set forth in claim 1 wherein said step of bending the knee joint in the patient's leg is performed without bending a knee joint in a second leg of the patient. 11. A method of imaging a knee joint in a patient's leg with an imaging unit, said method comprising the steps of supporting the patient on a support surface, connecting the patient's leg with a movable member with the patien
