A system for monitoring fuel consumption and optimizing refueling of a vehicle. The system includes a fuel level sensor designed to be mounted on a fuel tank. The fuel sensor has a transducer, such as an ultrasonic transducer, for generating a distance signal that represents the distance between the sensor and the surface of the fuel in the fuel tank. A processor coupled to the transducer is programmed to convert the distance signal to a percentage of capacity signal, calculate the volume of fuel within the fuel tank, and create a message that includes information regarding the volume of fuel in the fuel tank. The processor of the fuel level sensor is coupled to a network that may include a dispatch terminal, a fuel optimization server, and a fuel-price-by-location service. The network calculates an optimal location for refilling the fuel tank and a route to travel to the location. It broadcasts a message containing the refueling and route information to the vehicle information system, and devices coupled to the vehicle information system then display the message to inform the driver of the vehicle when and where to refuel.

A processor coupled to the transducer is programmed to convert the distance signal to a percentage of capacity signal, calculate the volume of fuel within the fuel tank, and create a message that includes information regarding the volume of fuel in the fuel tank. The processor of the fuel level sensor is coupled to a network that may include a dispatch terminal, a fuel optimization server, and a fuel-price-by-location service. The network calculates an optimal location for refilling the fuel tank and a route to travel to the location. An optical switching node as claimed in claim 1 wherein the photonic switch core includes a plurality of photonic switches, one photonic switch for each optical channel. 11. An optical switching node as claimed in claim 10 wherein each of the plurality of photonic switches comprises a 4-port MEMS. 12. An optical switching node as claimed in claim 10 wherein each of the plurality of photonic switches comprises a 6-port MEMS. 13. An optical switching node for a photonic network comprising: a photonic switch core having a plurality of inputs and a plurality of outputs and capable of connecting any input to any output; a first wavelength division demultiplexer coupled to a subset of the plurality of inputs for demultiplexing an optical signal having a first multiplex density into optical channels; a first wavelength division multiplexer coupled to a subset of the plurality of outputs for multiplexing any optical channels connected to it into an optical signal having a second multiplex density; the second multiplex density being higher than the first; the second multiplex density is k times the first multiplex density, where k is an integer each of the plurality of photonic switches comprises a photonic plane switch; and each photonic plane switch is a 4-port MEMS. 14. An optical switching node for a photonic network comprising: a photonic switch core having a plurality of inputs and a plurality of outputs and capable of connecting any input to any output; a first wavelength division demultiplexer coupled to a subset of the plurality of inputs for demultiplexing an optical signal having a first multiplex density into optical channels; a first wavelength division multiplexer coupled to a subset of the plurality of outputs for multiplexing any optical channels connected to it into an optical signal having a second multiplex density; the second multiplex density being higher than the first; the second multiplex density is k times the first multiplex density, where k is an integer; each of the plurality of photonic switches comprises a photonic plane switch; and each photonic plane switch is a 6-port MEMS. interference and having a predetermined width, a predetermined length and a predetermined thickness, comprising: a transmitting light source and a photo detector coupled to one side thereof; and a transmission line and a monitoring photo detector coupled to the other side thereof, wherein an output optical power having a first wavelength from the transmitting light source is divided at a predetermined percent and transferred to the transmission line and the monitoring photo detector, and one hundred percent of an input optical power having a second wavelength from the transmission line is transferred to the photo detector. 6. The filter of claim 5, wherein a length between the transmission line and the monitoring photo detector, and the photo detector and the transmitting line is determined by a beat length ratio. 7. The filter of claim 5, wherein the transmitting light source and the photo detector are located at trisection points of the width of the filter. 8.
