The invention relates to a method of checking the beam generation means and beam acceleration means of an ion beam therapy system that comprises a grid scanner device, arranged in a beam guidance system, having vertical deflection means and horizontal deflections means for the vertical and horizontal deflection of a treatment beam perpendicular to its beam direction, with the result that the treatment beam is deflected by the grid scanner device to an isocentre of the irradiation site, and a specific area surrounding the isocentre is scanned, wherein the type of ion, the ion beam energy, the ion beam intensity and the blocking of the accelerator and also the means for terminating extraction are checked.

1. Method of checking the beam generation means and beam acceleration means of an ion beam therapy system, wherein the ion beam therapy system comprises at least one ion source ( 1) an accelerator device ( 2,5) for the acceleration of the ions of the ion source (1) in the form of a treatment beam (11), a beam guidance system ( 6,8), to guide the treatment beam (11) from the accelerator device (2,5) to at least one irradiation site for treatment of a patient, the beam guidance system (6,8) comprising at least one beam guidance channel (6), and a grid scanner device, arranged in the beam guidance system ( 6,8), having vertical deflection means (13) and horizontal deflections means (14) for the vertical and horizontal deflection of the treatment beam (11) perpendicular to its beam direction, with the result that the treatment beam (11) is deflected by the grid scanner device to an isocentre (10) of the irradiation site and a specific area surrounding the isocentre (10) is scanned, andwherein the type of ion, the ion beam energy, the ion beam intensity and the blocking of the accelerator and also the means for terminating extraction are checked, characterised in that the type of ion is checked by recording the charge spectrum of the ion source in a high-charge injector and comparing it with a reference spectrum, the ion beam energy is checked by measuring Bragg curves in selected energy levels in an absorber ionisation chamber system, the ion beam intensity is checked by measuring the particle intensity in the acceleration device in an upper range of intensity, and the particle intensity at an irradiation site for all planned levels of intensity; the blocking of the accelerator is checked by sending switch-off commands and adjustment commands to components that are deactivated beforehand, the means for terminating extraction are checked by generating an interlock condition during an ion extraction and measuring decay time of the ion extraction. 2. Method according to claim 1, characterised in that the type of ion used is heavy ions.3. Method according to claim 1, characterised in that the type of ion used is12C2+ ions.4. Method according to claim 3, characterised in that the ions of the type12C2+ are stripped to12C6+ ions in a transfer channel between a linear accelerator and a heavy ion synchrotron.5. Method according to claim 1, characterised in that each time the ion source is initialised, the type of ion is checked for freedom from contamination and for correct type of ion.6. Method according to claim 1, characterised in that in order to measure the ion beam energy, the absorber ionisation chamber system is positioned at the isocentre.7. Method according to claim 1, characterized in that to measure the ion beam energy a therapy test cycle is activated with selected ion beam energy levels.8. Method according to claim 1, characterised in that a Bragg peak position is ascertained by measuring Bragg curves in minimum step widths in the region of the Bragg peak.9. Method according to claim 8, characterised in that an intervention threshold is exceeded when the position of the Bragg peak departs by more than 0.5 mm from a desired position, and a readjustment of the ion beam energy is brought about.10. Method according to claim 1, characterised in that the check of the ion beam energy is carried out prior to each block of irradiation procedures.11. Method according to claim 1, characterised in that the particle rate to be delivered by the accelerator from a heavy ion synchrotron is defined between 2×1010and 2×108ions per extraction with a subdivision into 15 fixed values as planned levels of intensity, the ion beam intensity being checked for a departure of the particle rate of maximum 30% above and maximum 50% below a predetermined desired value.12. Method according to claim 1, characterised in that the check of the ion beam intensity is carried out daily.13. Method according to claim 1, characterised in th at accelerator-generated data inputs relating to energy, focusing and intensity allocations are compared with the data for grid scan programming and/or irradiation planning prior to each block of irradiation procedures and, in the event of any discrepancy, irradiation treatment is not permitted.14. Method according to claim 1, characterised in that in order to check the blocking of the accelerator, first, all beam-affecting acceleration devices, especially a heavy ion synchrotron, and the beam guidance system with its components for the therapy accelerator, are deactivated, then all test accelerators are deactivated and the therapy accelerator is activated, all previously deactivated components for the therapy accelerator are activated and the blocking of the accelerator is activated, finally test switch-off commands for individual magnets and adjustments commands for beam guidance diagnosis components, which ought to remain without effect, are emitted. 15. Method according to claim 1, characterised in that the blocking of the accelerator is checked prior to each block of irradiation procedures.16. Method according to claim 1, characterised in that an interlock unit is used as a means of triggering a termination of extraction of the beam.17. Method according to claim 16, characterised in that as a means for carrying out termination of extraction, an additional quadrupole is arranged in the acceleration device, preferably a resonance quadrupole in a heavy ion synchrotron.18. Method according to claim 16, characterised in that a termination of extraction is brought about when there is a change between successive isoenergy levels in the grid scanning device or for an emergency shutdown in the event of an error of the interlock unit.19. Method according to claim 1, characterised in that in order to check the means for terminating extraction, a termination of extraction is triggered by simulation of the ending of an isoenergy level by means of a corresponding signal of an intensity measurement.20. Method according to claim 1, characterised in that an interlock condition is generated for the purpose of checking the means for terminating extraction.21. Method according to claim 1, characterised in that after triggering a termination of extraction, within one millisecond no ion beam can be detected.22.
