A multicellular communications system where transmission between a roving subscriber and multiple base station transceivers is maintained throughout the territory. Each mobile subscriber unit has global code seeds for the entire communications system or an updated neighbor list and continuously searches to access available cell base stations while maintaining a communication link with one base station. Candidate cell base stations are interrogated and communicated with. The candidate base station that requires less transmitting energy from the mobile subscriber unit is closely monitored. When the mobile subscriber unit can successfully communicate with less transmit power than currently required by the present base station, the mobile subscriber unit is handed off to the candidate base station transceiver.

A method for a mobile subscriber unit to control cell hand-off in a multicellular CDMA communication system while roving among individual cells, each cell associated with a base station which transmits a global pilot code, where the subscriber unit has a preexisting communication link with one of the base stations and is monitoring transmission power of the preexisting communication link, comprising the steps of the subscriber unit and a plurality of downloadable pilot codes:a) receiving by the subscriber unit a plurality of transmissions each containing a first pilot code transmitted by each of a plurality of candidate base stations;b) selecting a selected received transmission from one of the candidate base stations and checking if its first pilot code is valid, thereby identifying a selected candidate base station, and if the first pilot code is not valid, repeating steps a-b, the checking step comprising the steps of:i) generating a second pilot code from a plurality of global code seeds stored in a memory of the subscriber unit;ii) preparing the second pilot code by performing a maximum expected phase shift between the preexisting communication link and the selected candidate base station; andiii) comparing the first pilot code with the second pilot code;c) synchronizing an initial bi-directional handshake communication between the mobile subscriber unit and the selected base station with a minimized transmit power; andd) establishing a new communication link and abandoning the preexisting communication link to thereby define the new communication link as the preexisting communication link if the minimized transmit power between the mobile subscriber unit and the selected base station is less than the transmit power of the preexisting communication link. 2. The method of claim 1 wherein the synchronizing step comprises the steps of:ei) selecting the second pilot code associated with the selected base station from a plurality of global pilot codes seeds stored in the memory;eii) acquiring a short sync code from the selected base station using the selected second pilot code;eiii) if the short sync code cannot be acquired, selecting a received transmission associated with a different candidate base station; andeiv) repeating steps eii and eiii until a the second pilot code is received. 3. The method of claim 2 wherein the synchronizing step comprises the steps of;ev) acquiring a fast broadcast channel based upon phase information obtained from the received short sync code;evi) if the fast broadcast channel cannot be acquired, selecting a received transmission associated with a different candidate base station;evii) repeating steps eii-evi until the second pilot code is received; andeviii) acquiring the global pilot code using phase information obtained from the fast broadcast channel. 4. The method of claim 1 wherein the synchronizing step comprises the steps of:ei) transmitting a short access code by the mobile subscriber unit with a selected transmit power to the candidate base station; andeii) detecting a return transmitted signal from the candidate base station within a predetermined period of time, whereby the selected transmit power is the minimized transmit power. 5. A mobile subscriber system that controls cell hand-off in a multicellular CDMA communication system while roving among individual cells, each cell associated with a base station which transmits a global pilot code, where fire subscriber has a preexisting communication link with one of the base stations and is monitoring the transmission power of said communication link, said mobile subscriber system comprising:means for receiving by said mobile subscriber a plurality of transmissions each having a first pilot code transmitted by each of a plurality of candidate base stations not involved with said preexisting communication link;means for selecting a transmission from one of said candidate base stations having a valid first pilot code;means for acquiri ng a second pilot code based on said first pilot code, comprisingmeans for selecting said second pilot code associated with one of said plurality of candidate base stations based on said first pilot code from a plurality of second pilot codes stored in a memory;means for performing a maximum expected phase shift between said preexisting communication link and said selected candidate base station; andpreparing said second pilot code by means for comparing between said first pilot code and said second pilot code;means for synchronizing an initial bi-directional handshake communication between said mobile subscriber and a selected base station associated with said second pilot code with a minimized transmit power; andmeans for establishing a new communication link and abandoning said preexisting communication link to thereby define said new communication link as the preexisting communication link when said minimized transmit power between said mobile subscriber and said selected base station is less than the transmit power of said preexisting communication link. 6. The system of claim 5 further comprising means for synchronizing said transmission between said mobile subscriber and said selected base station. 7. The system of claim 5 wherein said means for synchronizing further comprises:means for sequentially exchanging predetermined signal codes between said mobile subscriber with one of said plurality of candidate base stations, including means for acquiring a short sync code;means for acquiring a fast broadcast channel based upon phase information obtained from said acquired short sync code;means for selecting a received transmission associated with a different candidate base station when said sequentially exchanging predetermined signal codes is not completed within a predetermined time period or said fast broadcast channel cannot be acquired; andmeans for acquiring a global pilot code using phase information obtained from said fast broadcast channel.
