Various improvements to steganographic systems, and applications therefore, are disclosed. The improvements include facilitating scale and rotation registration for steganographic decoding by use of rotationally symmetric steganographically embedded patterns and subliminal digital graticules; improved techniques for decoding without access to unencoded originals; improving robustness of steganographic coding in motion pictures and/or in the presence of lossy compression/decompression; and representing data by patterned bit cells whose energy in the spatial domain facilitates decoding registration. Applications include enhanced-security financial transactions, counterfeit resistant identification cards, fraud deterrent systems for cellular telephony, covert modem channels in video transmissions, photo duplication kiosks with automatic copyright detection, and hotlinked image objects (e.g. with embedded URLs) for use on the internet.

A system for operating on watermarked data that represents a creative work, said system comprising:a first computer having a first memory storing data representing a plurality of identifiers and contact data corresponding to each of the identifiers;a second computer programmed to read a watermark in said data to reveal one of the plurality of said identifiers;a network for communicating the revealed one of the plurality of identifiers to the first computer to obtain the contact data corresponding to the one of said plurality of identifiers from said first memory. 3. A system for operating on watermarked data that represents a creative work, said system comprising:a first subsystem having a first memory storing data representing a plurality of identifiers and contact data corresponding to each of said identifiers;a second subsystem programmed to read a watermark in said data to reveal one of said plurality of identifiers;a network for communicating the revealed one of the plurality of identifiers to the first subsystem to obtain the contact data corresponding to the one of said plurality of identifiers from said first memory. 4. The system recited in claim 1 wherein said watermarked data represents an image. 5. The system recited in claim 2 wherein said watermarked data represents an image. 6. The system of claim 1, wherein:said second computer is programmed to automatically detect a watermark when an image is first examined by said second computer. 9. The system of claim 2, wherein:said second computer is programmed to automatically detect a watermark when an image is first examined by said second computer. 10. The system of claim 3, wherein:said second subsystem is programmed to automatically detect a watermark when an image is first examined by said second subsystem. 11. The system of claim 1, wherein:the second computer is programmed to selectably detect for a watermark when an image is examined by said second computer. 12. The system of claim 1, wherein:said network includes the Internet;said watermark includes information identifying a World Wide Web site; and whereinsaid second computer is programmed to load a World Wide Web browser and connect to the World Wide Web site in response to the revealed one of the plurality of creator identifiers. 13. The system of claim 2, wherein:said network includes the Internet;said watermark includes information identifying a World Wide Web site; and whereinsaid second computer is programmed to load a World Wide Web browser and connect to the World Wide Web site in response to the revealed one of the plurality of creator identifiers. 14. The system of claim 1, wherein:said watermark includes extended data including at least one member from the group consisting of an organization identifier, a transaction identifier, and an item identifier. 15. The system recited in claim 1 including a third computer for embedding said watermark in data which does not contain a watermark. 16. A system for operating on a watermarked media object, said system comprising:a first computer having a first memory storing data representing a plurality of identifiers and contact data corresponding to each of the c reator identifiers;a second computer programmed to read a watermark in said media object to reveal one of the plurality of identifiers;a network for communicating the revealed one of the plurality of identifiers to said first computer to obtain contact data corresponding to the one of the plurality of identifiers from said first memory.
