A microchannel contactor and methods of contacting substances in microchannel apparatus are described. Some preferred embodiments are combined with microchannel heat exchange.

A process of contacting a substance in a first fluid with a compound in a second fluid, comprising:passing a gas comprising a first substance into a gas channel; passing a liquid comprising a second substance into a fluid microchannel at a rate such that 1/Pem is about 30 or less; wherein the fluid microchannel is adjacent to the gas channel and wherein the fluid microchannel is defined by a wick, or wherein a membrane separates the fluid microchannel from the gas channel. 2. The process of claim 1 wherein the liquid in the fluid microchannel is heated to a temperature above room temperature.3. The process of claim 2 wherein the first substance is carbon dioxide.4. The process of claim 3 wherein the fluid microchannel is heated to a temperature of about 40 to about 60° C.5. The process of claim 4 wherein the equilibrium sorption of carbon dioxide in the liquid is higher at room temperature than it is at 50° C.6. The process of claim 1 wherein the fluid microchannel is defined by a wick and comprising passing the liquid comprising a second substance into a fluid microchannel at a rate such that 1/Pem is about 20 or less.7. The process of claim 6 wherein the first substance is carbon monoxide.8. The process of claim 6 wherein the wick has a thickness of 380 microns or less.9. The process of claim 6 wherein the wick has a thickness of 150 to 380 microns.10. The process of claim 6 wherein the wick has a width, length and height that are mutually perpendicular, wherein the height is perpendicular to an interface between the liquid and the gas, and wherein the height of the wick is at least five times smaller than both the width and the length of the wick.11. The process of claim 1 comprising passing the liquid comprising a second substance into a fluid microchannel at a rate such that 1/Pem is about 5 to about 20.12. The process of claim 1 further comprising transferring heat between the gas channel and a microchannel heat exchanger that is in thermal contact with the gas channel.13. A microchannel contactor, comprising:a gas channel; a fluid microchannel that is adjacent to the gas channel and wherein the fluid microchannel is defined by a wick, or that is separated from the gas channel by a membrane; wherein the contactor is characterizable by a CO2 loading capacity of at least 0.3 CO2 mol per mol DEA when a 2 M DEA aqueous solution is flowing through the fluid microchannel at a 2 M DEA flow rate set to establish 1/Pem to equal 10, and when a 20% CO2/80% N2 mixture is flowing into the gas channel at a level sufficient to preclude a gas phase mass transfer limitation. 14. The contactor of claim 13 wherein the fluid microchannel is defined by a wick that has a width, length and height that are mutually perpendicular, wherein the height is perpendicular to an interface between the fluid microchannel and the gas channel, and wherein the height of the wick is at least five times smaller than both the width and the length of the wick.15. The contactor of claim 14 wherein the height of the gas channel is from 100 μm to 1 mm.16. The contactor of claim 14 comprising a ratio of surface area of exposed wick to volume of gas flow channel of from 1 to 1000 cm2:cm3.17. The contactor of claim 14 comprising a ratio of surface area of exposed wick to volume of gas flow channel of from 5 to 100 cm2:cm3.18. The contactor of claim 13 comprising between 2 and 600 separate gas flow channels.19. The contactor of claim 13 wherein the gas channel is a microchannel.20. The contactor of claim 13 further comprising a microchannel heat exchanger that is in thermal contact with the gas channel.
