Group communications methods and apparatus are described. In particular, methods for granting a mobile device access to a communications resource, e.g., the right to transmit data, associated with a group are described. User requests for the communications resource are suppressed by the corresponding mobile device, for periods during which the communications resource has been granted to another mobile device. A mobile device may store a suppressed user request so that a resource request signal may be transmitted after the communications resource has been released by the mobile device that was previously granted the resource. In this manner requests that cannot be granted are not transmitted, increasing communications efficiency as compared to systems where requests are not suppressed at the mobile devices. A priority scheme is used in some embodiments to determine whether or not a request should be suppressed while another device has been granted the communications resource.

The method of claim 1, wherein suppressing a received user resource request includes:responding to said user resource request without transmitting a device resource request in response to the received user resource request. 3. The method of claim 2, wherein suppressing a received user request further includes:storing said user resource request for at least a preselected period of time while said device remains in said suppress mode of operation. 4. The method of claim 3, wherein operating in a suppress mode of operation further includes:monitoring for group resource control signals; in response to receiving a group resource control signal indicating release of a group communications resource, transitioning from said suppress mode of operation to said idle mode of operation; and while in said idle mode of operation transmitting a device resource request corresponding to said stored user resource request. 5. The method of claim 2, wherein responding to said user communications resource request while in said suppressed mode of operation includes:generating a signal indicating to a user that user communications resource requests are being suppressed. 6. The method of claim 1, wherein operating in a suppress mode of operation further includes:receiving a group resource control signal; and in response to receiving a group resource control signal indicating release of a group communications resource, transitioning from said suppress mode of operation to said idle mode of operation. 7. The method of claim 1, wherein operating in an idle mode of operation further includes:receiving a group resource control signal; and in response to receiving a group resource control signal indicating a communications resource grant to another device in a communications group to which said group communications device belongs, transitioning from the idle mode of operation to said suppress mode of operation. 8. The method of claim 7, wherein said group resource control signal is included in a multi-cast IP packet.9. The method of claim 7, wherein operating in an idle mode of operation further includes:in response to receiving a group resource control signal indicating a communications resource grant to said group communications device, transitioning from the idle mode of operation to a send mode of operation. 10. The method of claim 9, further comprising:operating said group communications device in said send mode of operation during a third period of time, the step of operating in a send mode of operation including: transmitting data received from a user of the group communications device to other communications devices in the same group as said group communications device. 11. The method of claim 10, wherein said data is speech; andwherein transmitting data received from a user includes: digitizing received speech signals. 12. The method of claim 11, wherein transmitting data received from a user further includes:packetizing the digitized speech signals into IP packets; and transmitting said IP packets over a wireless communications channel. 13. The method of claim 10, wherein the step of operating in a send mode of operation further includes:monitoring to detect a user resource release signal; and in response to detecting a user resource release signal, transitioning from said send mode of operation to said idle mode of operation. 14. The method of claim 10, wherein the step of operating in a send mode of operation further includes:responding to a resource grant signal indicating a grant of said group communications resource to another group communications device, belonging to the same group as said group communications device, by transitioning from said send mode of operation to said suppress mode of operation. 15. The method of claim 1, wherein said group communications device is a wireless communications device coupled to a controller and a plurality of additional wireless communications devices by a wireless communications channel, said additional wireless communications devices being members of the same group as said group communications device, the method further comprising:operating each member of said group to monitor for signals from said controller and the other wireless communications devices in the group during each of said idle and suppress modes of operation. 16. The method of claim 1, wherein operating in an idle mode of operation further includes:receiving a group resource control signal including a communications resource grant to another device in a communications group to which said group communications device belongs and including a priority level indicator; and if said included priority level indicator indicates a priority level higher than a priority level associated with said communications device, transitioning from the idle mode of operation to said suppress mode of operation in response to said received group resource control signal. 17. The method of claim 16, further comprising:if said included priority level indicator indicates a priority level lower than a priority level associated with said communications device, remaining in the idle mode of operation. 18. The method of claim 1, wherein operating in an idle mode of operation further includes:receiving a group resource control signal indicating a communications resource grant to another device in a communications group to which said group communications device belongs, said another device having a higher communications priority than said group communications device; and transitioning from the idle mode of operation to said suppress mode of operation in response to said received group resource control signal including a communication resource grant to said another device. 19. The method of claim 18, wherein said received group resource control signal further indicates the priority of said another device.20. The method of claim 18, wherein operating in an idle mode of operation further includes:receiving a group resource control signal indicating a communications resource grant to another device in a communications group to which said group communications device belongs, said another device having a lower communications priority than said group communications device; and remaining in said idle mode of operation in response to said received group resource control signal including a communication resource grant to said another device. 21. A communications device suitable for use in performing a group communications operation, said communications device including:a receiver for receiving communication signals; a transmitter for transmitting communications signals; an input device for receiving user resource requests; and a control means for controlling the operation of said communications device in a plurality of modes of operation including a first mode of operation wherein the control means causes a device resource request to be transmitted in response to a received user resource request and a second mode of operation wherein the control means suppresses received user resource requests. 22. The communications device of claim 21, further comprising:means for storing a user resource request received during said second mode of operation. 23. The communications device of claim 22, wherein said control means includes:means for generating a device resource request corresponding to a stored resource request following transition of said communications device from said second mode of operation to said first mode of operation. 24. The communications device of claim 21, wherein said control means further includes:means for causing said mode of operation to transition from said first mode of operation to a third mode of operation in response to a resource grant signal indicating the grant of a communications resource to said communications device, said third mode of operation being a send mode of operation. 25. The communications device of claim 24, wherein said control means further includes:means for causing said mode of operation to transition from said third mode of operation to said second mode of operation when a resource grant to another device is received. 26.
