An adapter for mounting electrical outlet faceplates designed for mounting on rectangular junction boxes in hollow walls onto solid walls with cylindrical cavities and sleeves. Junction box mounting is popular in North America, whereas cavity mounting is popular in Europe and the Middle East. Such an adapter provides universal mounting for specialized faceplates which are designed and intended for junction box mounting. The adapter features clamps for gripping the inner surface of a wall cavity or sleeve and a rectangular plate for mounting an faceplate designed for junction box mounting. The rectangular plate has mounting points with a nominal center-to-center distance of 3? inches, corresponding to the requirements of junction box mounting.

An adapter for mounting a first faceplate of a first style on to an electrical outlet cavity constructed for mounting thereon a second faceplate of a second style via a fixture device, the adapter comprising:a plate having an opening for passing therethrough media for connecting to at least one connector mounted in said first faceplate, at least one fastener fixed to the plate for fixedly attaching the adapter to the outlet cavity, and at least one mounting point for attaching the first faceplate thereto, wherein the at least one fastener comprises a pair of spaced apart clamps for engaging an inner surface of a sleeve fixed in the outlet cavity. 3. An adapter for mounting a faceplate to an electrical outlet cavity, the faceplate being constructed to be mounted on a junction box having a rectangular cross section and the outlet cavity having a circular cross section, said adapter comprising:a fixture device constructed to be secured in the outlet cavity, and an adapter plate, said fixture device being secured to said adapter plate and said adapter plate having an opening for passing therethrough media for connecting to at least one connector mounted in the faceplate, wherein said adapter plate has at least one mounting point for attaching the faceplate thereto so that said adapter is interposed between the outlet cavity and the faceplate. 4. The adapter according to claim 3, wherein the at least one mounting point comprises a pair of spaced apart mounting points for attaching the faceplate to said adapter plate.5. The adapter according to claim 4, wherein the pair of mounting points are mutually separated by a distance of 3¼ inches.6. The adapter of claim 3, wherein the at least one mounting point is included in a group consisting of holes, posts, threaded holes, threaded posts, friction-fit posts and snap-fit posts.7. The adapter of claim 3, wherein said adapter plate serves as a back plate supporting around a perimeter thereof a generally boxlike construction comprising outer sides forming a junction box.8. The adapter according td claim 7, wherein the at least one mounting point comprises a pair of raised posts.9. An electrical outlet comprising: a faceplate constructed to be mounted on a junction box having a rectangular cross section; at least one connector mounted in said faceplate; and an adapter for mounting said faceplate to an electrical outlet cavity having a circular cross section, said adapter comprising:a fixture device constructed to be secured in the outlet cavity, and an adapter plate, said fixture device being secured to said adapter plate and said adapter plate having an opening for passing therethrough media for connecting to said at least one connector mounted in said faceplate, wherein said adapter plate has at least one mounting point for attaching said faceplate thereto so that said adapter is interposed between the outlet cavity and said faceplate. 10. The electrical outlet according to claim 9, wherein the at least one connector includes a telephone connector.11. The electrical outlet according to claim 9, wherein the at least one connector includes a power/electricity connector.12. The electrical outlet according to claim 9, wherein the at least one connector includes a CATV connector.13. The electrical outlet according to claim 9, wherein the at least one connector includes a computer data connector.14. A method for mounting a faceplate to an electrical outlet cavity, the faceplate being constructed to be mounted on a junction box having a rectangular cross section and the outlet cavity having a circular cross section, by an adapter comprising: a fixture device constructed to be secured in the outlet cavity; and an adapter plate secured to the fixture device and having an opening for passing therethrough media for connecting to at least one connector mounted in the faceplate, the method comprising:securing the fixture device in the outlet cavity by at least one fastener, connecting the media to at least one connector mounted in the faceplate, and fixing the faceplate to the adapter plate at at least one mounting point.
