Methodology for determining the bounds of a patient's acoustic window is described. Medical application acoustic array designs with apertures accommodated by patient acoustic windows and merged acoustic windows are exemplified.

A method for visualizing the acoustic window of a person, which comprises:(i) causing a person to assume a supine position; (ii) drawing a series of indicia on the chest of the person along the left sternal border at the beginning of each intercostal space for each of a selected plurality of intercostal spaces 1 to 6 of the person; (iii) placing a probe at the left sternal border of each of the selected intercostal spaces and moving said probe along each of the intercostal spaces until lung tissue is encountered; (iv) placing an indicator on the chest of the person to identify as to where at each intercostal space lung tissue is encountered; and (v) drawing a series of lines connecting said lung indicator indicia to the left sternal border on the chest of the person, wherein said lines indicate the bounds of the acoustic window perimeter of one corresponding intercostal space. 2. The method of claim 1, further comprising visualizing a boundary line with a perimeter geometry that encloses all of said individual intercostals space lines to define total acoustic window space of the person.3. The method of claim 2, further comprising determining an acoustic window centroid of the total acoustic window space.4. The method of claim 1, wherein the plurality of selected intercostals spaces includes at least spaces 4 and 5.5. The method of claim 1, further comprising providing a sensor array with a plurality of sensor elements and arranging the sensor array on the patient so that the sensor elements occupy a major portion of and extends substantially within the total visualized acoustic window space.8. The method of claim 7, wherein the sensor array includes about 32 sensor elements.9. The method of claim 8, further comprising non-invasively determining if the patient has coronary artery disease.10. The method of claim 7, wherein the sensor elements are configured to non-invasively detect heart and/or blood flow sounds.11. The method of claim 10, wherein the sensor elements are acoustic sensors.12. The method of claim 7, further comprising providing a sensor array and arranging the sensor array on the patient so that it's sensor elements extend across a major portion of the lines of the selected intercostals spaces but substantially within the total visualized acoustic window space.13. The method of claim 7, wherein the sensor array is a polyvinyldifluoride (PVDF) sensor array.14. The method of claim 7, wherein the sensor elements are piezoelectric film sensors.15. The method of claim 7, wherein the sensor array is a plurality of spaced-apart linear sensor arrays.16. The method of claim 15, wherein each of the linear sensor arrays are positioned on the person above selected respective intercostals spaces.17. The method of claim 7, wherein the sensor array comprises accelerometer sensor elements.18. The method of claim 7, wherein the sensor array comprises a linear array of about five rows or less each comprising about 9 elements or less.19. The method of claim 7, wherein the sensor array includes between about 13-57 elements.20. The method of claim 7, wherein the sensor array includes a plurality of linear subarrays, the method further comprising arranging the subarrays so that sensor elements are positioned above intercostals spaces 2-6.
