A method for wavelength locking, comprising:setting am optical pathlength associated with a tunable laser to a nominal optical pathlength; dithering the optical pathlength about the nominal optical pathlength; detecting an attribute of the tunable laser that is dependent upon the dithering; generating data indicative of the attribute; deriving an error signal based at least in part upon the data; and controlling the nominal optical pathlength depending upon the error signal. 3. A control circuit for wavelength locking, comprising:means for setting an optical pathlength associated with a tunable laser to a first setting; means for providing a modulation of the optical pathlength about the first setting; means for detecting an attribute of the tunable laser that is dependent upon the modulation about the first setting; means for generating data indicative of the attribute; means for deriving an error signal based at least in part upon the data; and means for adjusting the optical pathlength to a second setting depending upon the error signal. 4. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the signal processing device is configured to perform a Fourier Transform upon the data to derive the error signal.5. The apparatus of claim 4 wherein the signal processing device is further configured to perform a Fast Fourier Transform.6. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the pathlength adjuster circuit is coupled to control an electro-optic material to control the optical pathlength.7. The apparatus of claim 6 wherein the electro-optic material comprises lithium niobate.8. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the attribute of the tunable laser is indicative of an intensity of an optical beam generated by the tunable law.9. The apparatus of claim 8 wherein the detector comprises first and second electrodes operatively coupled to a gain medium of the tunable laser and wherein the attribute comprises a voltage across the gain medium.10. The apparatus of claim 8 wherein the detector comprises at least one photodiode positioned to receive a portion of the optical beam.11. The apparatus of claim 8 wherein the optical pathlength is adjusted to minimize intensity variations in the optical beam by aligning passbands of the tunable laser.12. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein a frequency of the modulation about the operating setting is high enough to provide coherence control of an optical beam of the tunable laser, but low enough to prevent interference with information modulated onto the optical beam.13. The apparatus of claim 1, further comprising:a tunable laser assembly including the detector and a tuning element controllable by the optical pathlength adjuster circuit to adjust the optical pathlength; a control circuit for controlling operation of the tunable laser assembly, the control circuit including the modulation signal generator, the pathlength adjuster circuit, and the signal processing device; and a network interface coupled to the control circuit and configured to allow remote operation of the tunable laser through the network interface. 14. The method of claim 2 wherein deriving the error signal comprises performing a Fourier Transform upon the data.15. The method of claim 2 wherein deriving the error signal comprises performing a Fast Fourier Transform upon the data.16. The method of claim 2 wherein dithering the optical pathlength about the nominal optical pathlength comprises dithering the optical pathlength with an electro-optic material.17. The method of claim 16 wherein the electro-optic material comprises lithium niobate.18. The method of claim 2 wherein the attribute of the tunable laser is indicative of an intensity of an optical beam of the laser.19. The method of claim 18 wherein detecting the attribute comprises detecting a voltage across a gain medium of the tunable laser.20. The method of claim 18 wherein detecting the attribute comprises receiving a portion of the optical beam with at least one photodiode.21. The method of claim 18 wherein the nominal optical pathlength is controlled to minimize intensity variations in the optical beam by aligning passbands of the tunable laser.22. The method of claim 2 wherein a frequency of the dithering is high enough to provide coherence control of an optical beam of the tunable laser, but low enough top prevent interference with information modulated onto the optical beam.23. The control circuit of claim 3 wherein the means for deriving the error signal performs a Fast Fourier Transform upon the data to derive the error signal.24. The control circuit of claim 3 wherein the means for adjusting the optical pathlength comprises a lithium niobate material.25. The control circuit of claim 3 wherein the means for adjusting the optical pathlength adjusts the optical path length to minimize intensity variations to an optical beam of the tunable laser by aligning passbands of the tunable laser.26. The control circuit of claim 3 wherein a frequency of the modulation is high enough to provide coherence control of an optical beam of the tunable laser, but low enough to prevent interference with information modulated onto the optical beam.27. The control circuit of claim 3 further comprising a network interface means for controlling the tunable laser from a remote location through the network interface means.
