A system, comprising:a point-to-point interconnect; a transmitting device having a first communication stack including a transaction layer, a data link layer, and a physical layer, the transaction layer to transmit a plurality of packets serially onto the point-to-point interconnect, each packet having a packet header, the packet header including a first field to extend one of a second field or a third field depending on the contents of the second field; and a receiving device communicatively couple to the transmitting device over the point-to-point interconnect, the receiving device having a second communication stack including a transaction layer, a data link layer, and a physical layer, the transaction layer to receive the plurality of packets serially from the transmitting device over the point-to-point interconnect.
