The tempering apparatus of claim 12, wherein the plurality of protrusions are disposed only on one side of each of the plate-like arms.14. The tempering apparatus of claim 13, wherein the plate-like arms include openings therethrough disposed to allow axial flow of the mass through the plate-like arms.15. The tempering apparatus of claim 12, including at least one heat exchanger having surfaces substantially parallel to the plate-like arms.16.
