A method for treating a relatively permeable formation containing heavy hydrocarbons in situ may include providing heat from one or more heat sources to a selected section of the formation. The heat provided to the selected section may pyrolyze at least some hydrocarbons in a lower portion of the formation. A mixture of hydrocarbons may be produced from an upper portion of the formation. The mixture of hydrocarbons may include at least some pyrolyzed hydrocarbons from the lower portion of the formation.
What is claimed is: 1. A method for treating a relatively permeable formation in situ, comprising: providing heat from one or more heaters to at least a portion of the relatively permeable formation; allowing the heat to transfer directly from the one or more heaters to a part of the formation suc
What is claimed is: 1. A method for treating a relatively permeable formation in situ, comprising: providing heat from one or more heaters to at least a portion of the relatively permeable formation; allowing the heat to transfer directly from the one or more heaters to a part of the formation such that the heat pyrolyzes at least some hydrocarbons within the part of the formation; producing a first mixture from a first portion of the formation; producing a second mixture from a second portion of the formation; and producing the first mixture or the second mixture when a partial pressure of hydrogen in the formation is at least about 0.5 bars. 2. The method of claim 1, further comprising producing a third mixture from a third portion of the formation. 3. The method of claim 1, further comprising producing a third mixture from a third portion of the part of the formation, wherein the first portion is substantially above the second portion, wherein the second portion is substantially above the third portion, and wherein the first mixture is produced, then the second mixture, and then the third mixture. 4. The method of claim 1, wherein the first portion is substantially above the second portion. 5. The method of claim 1, wherein the first portion is substantially below the second portion. 6. The method of claim 1, wherein the first portion is substantially adjacent to the second portion. 7. The method of claim 1, wherein the first mixture comprises an API gravity greater than about 20째. 8. The method of claim 1, wherein the second mixture comprises an API gravity greater than about 20째. 9. The method of claim 1, wherein the first mixture comprises an acid number less than about 1. 10. The method of claim 1, wherein the second mixture comprises an acid number less than about 1. 11. The method of claim 1, wherein the first portion comprises about an upper one-third of the formation. 12. The method of claim 1, wherein the second portion comprises about a lower one-third of the formation. 13. The method of claim 1, wherein the first mixture is produced before the second mixture is produced. 14. The method of claim 1, wherein the heat provided from at least one heater is transferred to at least a portion of the formation substantially by conduction. 15. The method of claim 1, wherein a ratio of energy output of the first or the second produced mixture to energy input into the formation is at least about 5. 16. A method for treating a relatively permeable formation in situ, comprising: providing heat from one or more heaters to at least a portion of the relatively permeable formation; allowing the heat to transfer from the one or more heaters to a part of the formation such that the heat pyrolyzes at least some hydrocarbons within the part of the formation; producing a first mixture from a first portion of the part of the formation; producing a second mixture from a second portion of the part of the formation; producing a third mixture from a third portion of the part of the formation; and wherein the first portion is substantially above the second portion, wherein the second portion is substantially above the third portion, and wherein the first mixture is produced, then the second mixture, and then the third mixture. 17. The method of claim 16, wherein the first mixture comprises an API gravity greater than about 20째. 18. The method of claim 16, wherein the second mixture comprises an API gravity greater than about 20째. 19. The method of claim 16, wherein the first mixture composes an acid number less than about 1. 20. The method of claim 16, wherein the second mixture comprises an acid number less than about 1. 21. The method of claim 16, wherein the first portion comprises about an upper one-third of the formation. 22. The method of claim 16, wherein the second portion comprises about a lower one-third of the formation. 23. The method of claim 16, wherein the first mixture is produced before the second mixture is produced. 24. The method of claim 16, further comprising producing the first or the second mixture when a partial pressure of hydrogen in the formation is at least about 0.5 bars. 25. The method of claim 16, wherein the heat provided from at least one heater is transferred to at least a portion of the formation substantially by conduction. 26. The method of claim 16, wherein a ratio of energy output of the first or the second produced mixture to energy input into the formation is at least about 5.
