The invention relates to a method for producing thermally and mechanically stable ammonium nitrate by dissolving in nitric acid 1-3% by weight of reticulated metal silicate, before treatment with ammonia. The ammonium nitrate granules produced by this method swell very little, they do not considerably cake, and their granule strength is high.

What is claimed is: 1. A method for producing thermally and mechanically stable, granulated ammonium nitrate, said method comprising the steps of: a) dissolving reticulated metal silicate in an amount of 1-3% by weight of the ammonium nitrate product in a fluid consisting mainly of nitric acid, b)

What is claimed is: 1. A method for producing thermally and mechanically stable, granulated ammonium nitrate, said method comprising the steps of: a) dissolving reticulated metal silicate in an amount of 1-3% by weight of the ammonium nitrate product in a fluid consisting mainly of nitric acid, b) treating the solution consisting mainly of nitric acid and reticulated metal silicate with ammonia in order to form an ammonium nitrate slurry and in order to neutralize the solution, and c) drying and granulating the ammonium nitrate slurry. 2. A method according to claim 1, wherein the reticulated metal silicate is selected from the group consisting of biotite, phlogopite, and mixtures thereof. 3. A method according to claim 2, wherein the phlogopite or biotite is pure or contains as impurity calcite and/or dolomite enrichment waste. 4. A method according to claim 1, wherein the reticulated metal silicate is dissolved in pure nitric acid or in nitric acid to which 1-2% by weight of concentrated sulfuric acid has been added. 5. A method according to claim 1, wherein the reticulated metal silicate is dissolved at a temperature of 40-70째 C. 6. A method according to claim 1, wherein the treatment with ammonia is performed at a temperature of 110-170째 C. 7. A method according to claim 1, wherein, in the treatment with ammonia, the pH is adjusted to a value of 5.0-7.0. 8. The method of claim 2, wherein the reticulated metal silicate is phlogopite. 9. The method of claim 5, wherein the reticulated metal silicate is dissolved at a temperature of 50-70째 C. 10. The method of claim 6, wherein the treatment with ammonia is performed at a temperature of 110-150째 C. 11. A method for producing thermally and mechanically stable, granulated ammonium nitrate having a total nitrogen content in the range of 33-34%, said method comprising the steps of: a) dissolving phlogopite, at a temperature of 50-70째 C., in an amount of 1-3% by weight of the ammonium nitrate product in a fluid consisting of nitric acid to which 1-2% by weight of concentrated sulfuric acid has been added, b) treating the solution consisting of nitric and sulfuric acids and reticulated metal silicate with ammonia at a temperature of 110-150째 C. in order to form an ammonium nitrate slurry and in order to neutralize the solution to a pH of 5.0-7.0, and c) drying and granulating the ammonium nitrate slurry.
