A dental material comprising a mixture of a hardenable resin and a glass or glass-ceramic comprising at least one of: a) at least 35 percent by weight Al2O3, based on the total weight of the glass or glass-ceramic, and a first metal oxide other than Al2O3, wherein the glass or glass-ceramic contains not more than 10 percent by weight collectively B2O3, GeO2, P2O5, SiO 2, TeO2, and V2O5, based on the total weight of the glass or glass-ceramic; b) at least 35 percent by weight Al2O3, based on the total weight of the glass or glass-ceramic, and a first metal oxide other than Al2O3, wherein the Al2 O3 and the first metal oxide collectively comprise at least 70 percent by weight of the glass or glass-ceramic, wherein the glass or glass-ceramic contains not more than 20 percent by weight collectively B2O3, GeO2, P2O5, SiO 2, TeO2, and V2O5, based on the total weight of the glass or glass-ceramic; c) Al2O3 and at least one of rare earth oxide(s) or Y2O3, wherein at least 80 percent by weight of the glass or glass-ceramic collectively comprises the Al2O 3 and the at least one of rare earth oxide(s) or Y2O 3, based on the total weight of the glass or glass-ceramic; d) Al2O3, at least one of rare earth oxide(s) or Y2O3, and at least one of ZrO2 or HfO2, wherein at least 80 percent by weight of the glass or glass-ceramic collectively comprises the Al2O3, at least one of rare earth oxide(s) or Y2O3, and at least one of ZrO2 or HfO2, based on the total weight of the glass or glass-ceramic; e) Al2O3 and at least one of rare earth oxide(s) or Y2O3, wherein at least 60 percent by weight of the glass or glass-ceramic collectively comprises the Al2O 3 and the at least one of rare earth oxide(s) or Y2O 3, and wherein the glass or glass-ceramic contains not more than 20 percent by weight SiO2 and not more than 20 percent by weight B2O3, based on the total weight of the glass or glass-ceramic; f) Al2O3, at least one of rare earth oxide(s) or Y2O3, and at least one of ZrO2 or HfO2, wherein at least 60 percent by weight of the glass or glass-ceramic collectively comprises the Al2O3, at least one of rare earth oxide(s) or Y2O3, and at least one of ZrO2 or HfO2, and wherein the glass or glass-ceramic contains not more than 20 percent by weight SiO2 and not more than 20 percent by weight B2O3, based on the total weight of the glass or glass-ceramic; g) Al2O3 and at least one of rare earth oxide(s) or Y2O3, wherein at least 60 percent by weight of the glass or glass-ceramic comprise the Al2O3 and the at least one of rare earth oxide(s) or Y2O3, and wherein the glass or glass-ceramic contains not more than 35 percent by weight collectively SiO2, B2O3, and P2 O5, based on the total weight of the glass or glass-ceramic; h) Al2O3, at least one of rare earth oxide(s) or Y2O3, and at least one of ZrO2 or HfO2, wherein at least 60 percent by weight of the glass or glass-ceramic collectively comprises the Al2O3, at least one of rare earth oxide(s) or Y2O3, and at least one of ZrO2 or HfO2, and wherein the glass or glass-ceramic contains not more than 40 percent by weight collectively SiO 2, B2O3, and P2O5, based on the total weight of the glass or glass-ceramic; i) a glass-ceramic having an average hardness of at least 13 Gpa; j) Al2O3 and at least one of rare earth oxide(s) or Y2O3, wherein at least 65 percent by weight of the glass or glass-ceramic, respectively, comprise the Al2 O3 and the at least one of rare earth oxide(s) or Y2 O3, and wherein the glass, or glass-ceramic, contains not more than 40 percent by weight collectively SiO2, B2O 3, and P2O5, based on the total weight of the glass, or glass-ceramic; or k) at least 35 percent by weight Al2O3, based on the total weight of the glass or glass-ceramic, respectively, and a first metal oxide other than Al2O3, wherein the Al2O3 and the first metal oxide, collectively comprise at least 80 percent by weight of the glass or glass-ceramic and wherein the first metal oxide is selected from the group consisting of Y2 O3, rare earth oxide(s), MgO, TiO2, Cr2O 3, CuO, NiO, and Fe2O3. 2. The dental material of claim 1 wherein the dental material is selected from the group consisting of dental restoratives, dental adhesives, dental filler, dental mill blanks, dental prosthesis, dental casing materials, and dental coatings. 3. The dental material of claim 1 wherein the hardenable resin is selected from the group consisting of a curable monomer, oligomer, or polymer, and combinations thereof. 4. The dental material of claim 1 wherein the glass or glass-ceramic is in the form of particles, nanoclusters, fibers, flakes, whiskers, block, beads, or combinations thereof. 5. A method of making a dental article or an orthodontic appliance comprising the steps of: combining a glass or glass-ceramic with a hardenable resin to form a mixture; forming the dental article or the orthodontic appliance into a shape; hardening said mixture to form the dental article or orthodontic appliance, wherein said glass or glass-ceramic comprises at least one of: a) at least 35 percent by weight Al2O3, based on the total weight of the glass or glass-ceramic, and a first metal oxide other than Al2O3 wherein the glass or glass-ceramic contains not more than 10 percent by weight collectively B 2O3, GeO2, P2O5, SiO2, TeO2, and V2O5, based on the total weight of the glass or glass-ceramic; b) at least 35 percent by weight Al2O3, based on the total weight of the glass or glass-ceramic, and a first metal oxide other than Al2O3, wherein the Al2 O3 and the first metal oxide collectively comprise at least 70 percent by weight of the glass or glass-ceramic; c) Al2O3 and at least one of rare earth oxide(s) or Y2O3, wherein at least 80 percent by weight of the glass or glass-ceramic collectively comprises the Al2O 3 and the at least one of rare earth oxide(s) or Y2O 3, based on the total weight of the glass or glass-ceramic; d) Al2O3, at least one of rare earth oxide(s) or Y2O3, and at least one of ZrO2 or HfO2, wherein at least 80 percent by weight of the glass or glass-ceramic collectively comprises the Al2O3, at least one of rare earth oxide(s) or Y2O3, and at least one of ZrO2 or HfO2, based on the total weight of the glass or glass-ceramic; e) Al2O3 and at least one of rare earth oxide(s) or Y2O3, wherein at least 60 percent by weight of the glass or glass-ceramic collectively comprises the Al2O 3 and the at least one of rare earth oxide(s) or Y2O 3, and wherein the glass or glass-ceramic contains not more than 20 percent by weight SiO2 and not more than 20 percent by weight B2O3, based on the total weight of the glass or glass-ceramic; f) Al2O3, at least one of rare earth oxide(s) or Y2O3, and at least one of ZrO2 or HfO2, wherein at least 60 percent by weight of the glass or glass-ceramic collectively comprises the Al2O3, at least one of rare earth oxide(s) or Y2O3, and at least one of ZrO2 or HfO2, and wherein the glass or glass-ceramic contains not more than 20 percent by weight SiO2 and not more than 20 percent by weight B2O3, based on the total weight of the glass or glass-ceramic; g) Al2O3 and at least one of rare earth oxide(s) or Y2O3, wherein at least 60 percent by weight of the glass or glass-ceramic comprise the Al2O3 and the at least one of or Y2O3, and wherein the glass or glass-ceramic contains not more than 35 percent by weight collectively SiO2, B2O3, and P2O5, based on the total weight of the glass or glass-ceramic; h) Al2O3, at least one of rare earth oxide(s) or Y2O3, and at least one of ZrO2 or HfO2, wherein at least 60 percent by weight of the glass or glass-ceramic collectively comprises the Al2O3, at least one of rare earth oxide(s) or Y2O3, and at least one of ZrO2 or HfO2, and wherein the glass or glass-ceramic contains not more than 40 percent by weight collectively SiO 2, B2O3, and P2O5, based on the total weight of the glass or glass-ceramic; i) a glass-ceramic having an average hardness of at least 13 Gpa; j) Al2O3 and at least one of rare earth oxide(s) or Y2O3, wherein at least 65 percent by weight of the glass or glass-ceramic, respectively, comprise the Al2 O3 and the at least one of rare earth oxide(s) or Y2 O3, and wherein the glass, or glass-ceramic contains not more than 40 percent by weight collectively SiO2, B2O 3, and P2O5, based on the total weight of the glass, or glass-ceramic; or k) at least 35 percent by weight Al2O3, based on the total weight of the glass or glass-ceramic, respectively, and a first metal oxide other than Al2O3, wherein the Al2O3 and the first metal oxide, collectively comprise at least 80 percent by weight of the glass or glass-ceramic and wherein the first metal oxide is selected from the group consisting of Y2 O3 rare earth oxide(s), MgO, TiO2, Cr2O 3, CuO, NiO, and Fe2O3.
