A permanent magnet starter/generator subsystem configured in a fault tolerant architecture is described herein for small engine applications. The system allows for lighter system weight, improved system reliability, higher performance capability and reduced maintenance.

What is claimed is: 1. A permanent magnet starter/generator system including: a permanent magnet generator (PMG) unit; and a power conversion unit (PCU) connected to the PMG, the PCU including; a plurality of converter modules connected to a power output bus, and a control module connected to the plurality of converter modules, the control module being configured to implement starter and generator modes of operation; wherein in the starter mode an AC excitation is generated in the PCU and applied to the PMG to cause a rotor assembly in the PMG to rotate and enable an engine start operation, and wherein in the generator mode an AC voltage is generated in the PMG when the rotor assembly is rotated by a prime mover driven by the engine, and the PCU converts the AC voltage to a desired voltage form; and wherein the power output bus is connected to at least one of a vehicle electrical load and a vehicle electrical power distribution system. 2. The system of claim 1, wherein the PCU includes three converter modules. 3. The system of claim 1, wherein a filter is connected between the plurality of converter modules and the power output bus. 4. The system of claim 3, wherein the power output is regulated to a specific form of at least one of AC and DC voltage. 5. The system of claim 3, wherein the control module is further configured to implement a standby mode of operation wherein, in the standby mode, power is not provided from the PCU. 6. The system of claim 3, wherein a predetermined torque versus speed characteristic is produced by the PMG during the starter mode of operation and the torque characteristic is controlled by the excitation voltage applied to the PMG by the PCU; and the torque versus speed profile typically includes a starter assist to approximately 40% maximum PMG drive speed which incorporates a soft start characteristic. 7. The system of claim 1, further including internal to the converter modules, a plurality of bi-directional power factor corrected full wave bridge modules, a plurality of isolated bi-directional converter DC-DC modules, and a plurality of feedback control modules; wherein the isolated DC-DC bi-directional converter modules are each connected to the PCU output filter module, one of the plurality of bi-directional power factor corrected full wave bridge modules, and one of the plurality of feedback control modules; wherein the bi-directional power factor corrected full wave bridge modules are each connected to one phase of a plurality of PMG phases, and one of the plurality of bi-directional power factor corrected full wave bridge modules; and wherein the feedback control modules are each connected to one of the plurality of isolated DC-DC bi-directional converter modules and an equalizer and phase balance control module within the PCU control module. 8. The system of claim 7, further including internal to the control module, a speed/phase detection and control module, a ground fault detector module, a control logic module, an equalizer and phase balance control module and an auxiliary converter module; wherein the speed/phase detection and control module is connected to a plurality of PMG windings and the plurality of bi-directional power factor corrected bridge modules within the power converter modules, the speed/phase detection and control module is configured to provide the speed and phase detection of the AC voltage from the PMG; wherein the ground fault detector module is connected to the plurality of PMG windings, to the plurality of the bi-directional power factor corrected bridge modules within the power converter modules, and to the control logic module, the ground fault detector module is configured to detect ground faults; wherein the control logic module is connected to the ground fault detector module, to the plurality of bi-directional power factor corrected bridge modules within the power converter modules, to the plurality of isolated bi-directional converter DC-DC modules within the converter modules, and to a PCU input/output control and status bus, the control logic module is configured to ensure that proper start and generator mode operation is performed by the PCU; wherein the equalizer and phase balance control module is connected to a plurality of feedback control module within the power converter modules, and to a PCU input/output control and status bus, the equalizer and phase balance control module is configured to ensure the DC-DC converter modules provide approximately equivalent power during generate and start mode operation, as well as insuring the converters are synchronized; and wherein the auxiliary converter module is connected to the PCU output bus or a PCU control power input, and to a plurality of power converter and control modules within the PCU, the auxiliary converter module is configured to provide general control power. 9. The system of claim 8, further including an information bus connected to the PCU and powered at least in part by at least one of control, built-in-test and fault detection logic of the PCU. 10. The system of claim 9, wherein the control logic is configured to terminate the start of an engine and initiate a failed start indication upon a fault during engine start. 11. The system of claim 10, wherein the control logic is configured to determine the rotation of the engine. 12. The system of claim 1, wherein each phase of windings in the PMG is electrically isolated from an aircraft structure and from each other phase of the PMG's windings. 13. The system of claim 1, wherein each converter modules is connected to a winding in the PMG. 14. The system of claim 1, wherein windings in the PMG can sustain a continuous short within at least one of the PMG, the PCU and a feeder cable interconnecting the PCU to the PMG; wherein the PMG is configured to continue operation in the generator mode even in the presence of a short on at least one winding; and wherein the PMG in configured for safe operation in the presence said short on at least of one the windings. 15. The system of claim 1, wherein the PCU is capable of sustaining a continuous short within at least one of the PMG, the PCU and a feeder cable interconnecting the PCU to the PMG; wherein the PCU is configured to operate in the generator mode in the presence of a short on at least one converter phases; and wherein the PCU is configured for safe operation even in the presence of said short on at least one converter phases. 16. The system of claim 1, wherein the PCU's output voltage is regulated to at least one of DC and AC voltage. 17. The system of claim 16, wherein a plurality of bi-directional power converters are each connected to one of a plurality of isolated PMG windings. 18. The system of claim 16, wherein the bi-directional power converters include a bi-directional power factor corrected bridge module connected to one of the plurality of PMG windings and a bi-directional DC-DC converter module connected to one of the plurality of bridge modules and to PCU output filter module.
