A soil aeration device may include a plurality of arcuate blades mounted to an assembly adapted to rotate and translate the blades proximate a ground surface, thereby forming aeration pockets in the soil. In certain embodiments, the arcuate tines penetrate and fracture the soil while minimizing the amount of soil lifted from the pocket deposited on the top of the soil. In various embodiments, a planetary gear assembly imparts to the tine a translational and rotational movement which creates a fractured pocket in the soil while minimizing the amount of soil lifted from the pocket and deposited on the surface of the soil. In still other embodiments, the arcuate tine may have mounted thereon a coring tube that cuts and removes a plug from the pocket formed in the soil.

What is claimed is: 1. An aeration device, comprising: a tine holding member; a gear assembly that imparts rotational and translational motion to the tine holding member; and a plurality of aeration tines mounted to the tine holding member, each aeration tine having a proximal end and a distal end

What is claimed is: 1. An aeration device, comprising: a tine holding member; a gear assembly that imparts rotational and translational motion to the tine holding member; and a plurality of aeration tines mounted to the tine holding member, each aeration tine having a proximal end and a distal end and including an arcuate blade portion having a concave blade edge and a complementary convex blade edge, said edges converging near said distal end; wherein the rotational and translational motion is imparted to at least one aeration tine while that aeration tine is at least partially in a ground surface. 2. The aeration device of claim 1, wherein the gear assembly includes a planetary gear and said tine holding member is attached to said planetary gear. 3. The aeration device of claim 2, wherein the planetary gear imparts a movement to said aeration tines, said movement being adapted to form a slit in a soil surface and a pocket under the soil surface which is larger than the slit. 4. The aeration device of claim 1, wherein the arcuate blade portion has a thickness which is substantially less than the thickness of the proximal portion of the aeration tine. 5. The apparatus of claim 1, each aeration tine further including an aeration tube having a longitudinal axis substantially parallel to the proximal portion of the aeration tine. 6. The aeration device of claim 1, wherein the blade portion has a thickness equal to or less than about 5/16 inch. 7. The aeration device of claim 1, wherein the blade portion has a thickness equal to or less than about ⅛ inch. 8. The aeration device of claim 1, wherein the tine holding member is a shaft having means for retaining said aeration tines. 9. An aeration method, comprising: providing a plurality of aeration tines, each aeration tine having a proximal end and a distal end and including an arcuate blade portion having a concave blade edge and a complementary convex blade edge, said edges converging near said distal end; imparting rotational and translational motion to the tines when such tines are at least partially in a soil surface such that each tine forms a slit in the soil surface and a pocket under the soil surface without lifting substantial amounts of subterranean soil onto the soil surface. 10. The method of claim 9, wherein the slit has a first length and the pocket has a second length, said first length being smaller than said second length. 11. The method of claim 9, wherein the translational and rotational movement is imparted by a planetary gear assembly, said translation movement being imparted by counterclockwise movement of a planet gear and said rotational movement being clockwise. 12. The method of claim 9, wherein the translational and rotational movement is imparted by a planetary gear assembly, said translation movement being imparted by clockwise movement of a planet gear and said rotational movement being counterclockwise. 13. The method of claim 9, wherein each tine simultaneously removes a soil plug proximate the pocket. 14. An aeration device, comprising: a tine holding member; a gear assembly to impart rotational and translational motion to the tine holding member; and a plurality of aeration tines mounted to the tine holding member, each aeration tine having a proximal end and a distal end and including an blade portion having a concave blade edge and a complementary convex blade edge, said edges converging near said distal end, wherein said rotational and translational movement causes at least one aeration tine to form a slit in a soil surface and a pocket under the soil surface that is larger than the slit. 15. The aeration device of claim 14, wherein the gear assembly includes a planetary gear and said tine holding member is attached to said planetary gear. 16. The aeration device of claim 14, wherein the blade portion has a thickness which is substantially less than the thickness of the proximal portion of the aeration tine. 17. The apparatus of claim 14, each aeration tine further including an aeration tube having a longitudinal axis substantially parallel to the proximal portion of the aeration tine. 18. The aeration device of claim 14, wherein the blade portion has a thickness equal to or less than about 5/16 inch. 19. The aeration device of claim 14, wherein the blade portion has a thickness equal to or less than about ⅛ inch. 20. The aeration device of claim 14, wherein the tine holding member is a shaft having means for retaining said aeration tines. 21. An aeration method, comprising: providing a plurality of aeration tines, each aeration tine having a proximal end and a distal end and including an blade portion having a concave blade edge and a complementary convex blade edge, said edges converging near said distal end; imparting rotational and translational motion to the tines when such tines are proximate a soil surface such that each tine forms a slit in the soil surface and a pocket under the soil surface without lifting substantial amounts of subterranean soil onto the soil surface, wherein the slit has a first length and the pocket has a second length, said first length being smaller than said second length. 22. The method of claim 21, wherein the translational and rotational movement is imparted by a planetary gear assembly, said translation movement being imparted by counterclockwise movement of a planet gear and said rotational movement being clockwise. 23. The method of claim 21, wherein the translational and rotational movement is imparted by a planetary gear assembly, said translation movement being imparted by clockwise movement of a planet gear and said rotational movement being counterclockwise. 24. The method of claim 21, wherein each tine simultaneously removes a soil plug proximate the pocket.
