A method of producing a processed kava product involves using an extraction solvent, such as liquid CO2, to preferentially extract different kavalactones from the source material at different rates. By controlling the extraction parameters and stopping the extraction before all of the kavalactones have been extracted or allowing the extracted kavalactones to be preferentially precipitated in one or more collection environments, a processed kava product can be produced that has a kavalactone distribution profile that can differ substantially from that of the source material. As a result, roots from a less desirable kava cultivar can be used to produce a processed kava product which has a kavalactone distribution profile that is similar to that of a highly desired cultivar. A material having a preferred kavalactone distribution profile is also disclosed. The kava paste can be further processed to produce a dry flowable powder suitable for use in, e. g., a tableting formula. A rapid dissolve tablet formulation for use in the delivery of kavalactones is also disclosed.

The kava extract composition of claim 1, wherein the kavain component is greater than about thirty-eight percent by weight of the total weight of extracted kavalactones. 7. The kava extract composition of claim 1, wherein the extracted kavalactones have a ratio of the dihydrokavain component to the kavain component, by weight, of less than about-4 dB. 8. The kava extract composition of claim 1, comprising, a methysticin component that is in the range of about 2.6 percent to about 4.8 percent, by weight, of the total weight of extracted kavalactones; a dihydromethysticin component that is in the range of about 8.7 percent to about 13 percent, by weight, of the total weight of extracted kavalactones; a kavain component that is in the range of about 28 percent to about 39 percent, by weight, of the total weight of extracted kavalactones; a dihydrokavain component that is in the range of about 30 percent to about 52.4 percent, by weight, of the total weight of kavalactones; a yangonin component that is in the range of about 0 percent to about 1.4 percent, by weight, of the total weight of extracted kavalactones; and a desmethoxyyangonin component that is in the range of about 8.4 percent to about 11.8 percent, by weight, of the total weight of kavalactones. 10. A kava extract composition, comprising, extracted kavalactones consisting of, a first composition, comprising a methysticin component and a dihydromethysticin component, that is less than about sixty-four percent, by weight, of the total weight of extracted kavalactones; a second composition comprising said desmethoxyyangonin component and said yangonin component, and a third composition comprising a kavain component and a dihydrokavain component, that is less than about seventy-nine percent, by weight, of the total weight of extracted kavalactones. 11. The kava extract composition of claim 1, wherein the amount of the combined methysticin component and the dihydromethysticin component is less than about fifteen percent by weight of the total weight of the extracted kavalactones. 12. The kava extract composition of claim 1, wherein the amount of the combined desmethoxyyangonin component and the yangonin component is less than about eight percent by weight of the total weight of the extracted kavalactones. 13. The kava extract composition of claim 1, wherein the amount of the combined kavain component and the dihydrokavain component is greater than about seventy percent by weight of the total weight of the extracted kavalactones.
