Pharmaceutical compositions containing 2,6-diisopropylphenol (propofol) are described for use as anaesthetics. A method for their preparation is described, as their use in producing anaesthesia including induction and maintenance of general anaesthesia and sedation.

What is claimed is: 1. A sterile parenteral nutrition composition comprising an oil-in-water emulsion in which a water-immiscible nutritional agent is emulsified with water and stabilised by means of a surfactant, and which further comprises an amount of edetate in a molar concentration in the range of from 3횞10-5 to 9횞10-4. 2. The sterile parenteral nutrition composition according to claim 1, wherein the molar concentration of edetate in said composition is within the range of from 3횞10-5 to 7.5횞10-4. 3. The sterile parenteral nutrition composition according to claim 2, wherein the molar concentration of edetate in said composition is within the range of from 1.5횞10-4 to 3.0횞10-4. 4. The sterile parenteral nutrition composition according to claim 3, wherein the molar concentration of edetate in said composition is about 1.5횞10-4. 5. The sterile parenteral nutrition composition according to claim 1, wherein the water-immiscible nutritional agent is a vegetable oil. 6. The sterile parenteral nutrition composition according to claim 5, wherein the vegetable oil is soy bean oil. 7. The sterile parenteral nutrition composition according to claim 1, wherein the surfactant is a naturally occurring phosphatide. 8. The sterile parenteral nutrition composition according to claim 7, wherein the phosphatide is egg phosphatide or soya phosphatide. 9. The sterile parenteral nutrition composition according to claim 1, wherein the pH of said composition is between about 6.0 and about 8.5. 10. The sterile parenteral nutrition composition according to claim 9, wherein said composition additionally comprises sodium hydroxide. 11. The sterile parenteral nutrition composition according to claim 1, wherein said composition is isotonic with blood. 12. The sterile parenteral nutrition composition according to claim 11, wherein said composition is made isotonic with blood by incorporation of glycerol. 13. The sterile parenteral nutrition composition according to claim 1, wherein the edetate is disodium edetate.
