A system for disposing of medical waste is generally configured to sort waste items into a plurality of disposable containers according to applicable rules and regulations governing the handling and/or disposal of such items. In some embodiments, a system comprises sorting stations, each of which houses a number of disposable containers. Each station can identify an item of waste, determine the most appropriate container for the item, and facilitate disposal of the item in the appropriate container.

The system of claim 1, wherein the waste item identification device comprises a barcode reader. 3. The system of claim 1, wherein the waste item identification device comprises an RFID reader. 4. The system of claim 1, wherein each of the plurality of containers is coded to indicate the type of waste contained therein. 5. The system of claim 4, wherein each of the removable containers is coded by an alphanumeric identifier. 6. The system of claim 4, wherein each of the removable containers is color-coded. 7. The system of claim 1, wherein each station is configured to recognize a container type and a waste category associated with the container type. 8. The system of claim 1, further comprising a printer configured to print a label which identifies a contents of one of the removable containers. 9. The system of claim 1, further comprising a scale for weighing at least one of the removable containers after a waste item has been deposited. 10. The system of claim 1, wherein each of the removable containers is individually removable and sealable. 11. The system of claim 1, wherein the central processing unit is in electronic communication with an external network. 12. A system for sorting medical waste items, the system comprising: a plurality of sorting stations in electronic communication with one another in a de-centralized network, the sorting stations being physically separated from one another; a classification database residing on a data storage device in at least one of the stations, the database listing a plurality of waste item identifiers distributed into a plurality of waste categories; each sorting station comprising: a plurality of container compartments, each container compartment comprising an opening that is configured to receive a removable container; a plurality of removable containers, each removable container being sized and configured to be placed in one of the container compartments and further sized and configured to receive a plurality of medical waste items, and each container being of a specific type defining a group of items to be placed therein, each removable container comprising an opening and a movable lid wherein the movable lid is movable to an open position to reveal the opening and is movable to a covered position to occlude the opening; a waste item identification device configured to receive a waste item identifier from a waste item; a decision system configured to classify a waste item into a waste category using the waste item identifier and information contained in the classification database and to indicate into which of the removable containers a waste item should be deposited; wherein the decision system is further configured to allow the movable lid on at least one of the removable containers to move to the open position if the removable container is associated with the waste category; and wherein the decision system is further configured to lock the movable lid of a removable container when the removable container is full such that the opening in the removable container is occluded by the movable lid when the removable container is removed from the container compartment. 13. The system of claim 12, wherein each of the removable containers is associated with one of the waste categories. 14. The system of claim 12, wherein each station includes a list of the types of each of the removable containers therein. 15. The system of claim 14, wherein each station includes a list of the types of each of the containers in each of the stations. 16. A method of sorting medical waste items, the method comprising: joining a plurality of physically separated sorting stations in electronic communication with one another in a network; joining each sorting station in electronic communication with a classification database, the database listing a plurality of waste item identifiers distributed into a plurality of waste categories; placing a plurality of removable containers in container compartments within each station, each container compartment comprising an opening that is configured to receive a removable container and each removable container being sized and configured to be placed in one of the container compartments and further sized and configured to receive a plurality of medical waste items, each removable container comprising an opening and a movable lid wherein the movable lid is movable to an open position to reveal the opening and is movable to a covered position to occlude the opening; providing each station with a waste item identification device configured to receive a waste item identifier from a waste item; configuring a decision system to classify waste items into waste categories using the waste item identifier and information contained in the classification database; allowing the movable lid on at least one of the removable containers to move to the open position if the removable container is associated with the waste category; and locking the movable lid of a removable container when the removable container is full such that the opening in the removable container is occluded by the movable lid when the removable container is removed from the container compartment. 17. The method of claim 16, wherein, prior to placement in a sorting station, each of the removable containers is associated with one of the waste categories, and wherein the decision system is further configured to indicate into which of the removable containers a waste item should be deposited. 18. The method of claim 16, wherein each station communicates with every other station via a central processing unit. 19.
