A sealed lead-acid battery includes a separator made from hydrophilic treated sheet made from synthetic fiber which wraps at least either one of a positive electrode and a negative electrode. A mat type separator made from fine glass fiber is disposed between the wrapped electrode and its opposite electrode. This structure is adopted in a battery which uses a paste type electrode where an expanded grid having no outer frame on both edges is used, thereby prolonging cycle life even after cycling of charge and deep discharge.

What is claimed is: 1. A sealed lead-acid battery comprising: an electrolyte, and an electrode group, the electrode group comprising: (a) a first separator comprising a hydrophilic treated sheet made from synthetic fiber, said first separator being shaped like an envelope, (b) a first electrode surrounded by said first separator, (c) a second separator outside said first separator, said second separator comprising fine glass fibers, and (d) a second electrode opposite in polarity to said first electrode outside said second separator; wherein said sealed lead-acid battery is a retainer type battery. 2. The sealed lead-acid battery of claim 1 in which (a) said second separator is either (i) double-backed to form a "U" shape, or (ii) two separate glass fiber sheets, (b) said electrode group additionally comprises an additional electrode, said additional electrode being opposite in polarity to said first electrode, and (c) said second electrode and said additional electrode being situated on either side of said second separator. 3. The sealed lead-acid battery of claim 1 in which: (a) said second separator is either a mat separator double backed to form a "U" shape, or two pieces of said mat separator that are in contact with the outer surfaces of said first separator, and (b) said second electrode is in contact with said second separator. 4. The sealed lead-acid battery of claim 1, claim 2, or claim 3 wherein said hydrophilic treated sheet comprises at least one thermoplastic synthetic fiber selected from the group consisting of polyvinyl chloride, polyethylene terephthalate, polyethylene, and polypropylene. 5. The sealed lead-acid battery of claim 1, claim 2, or claim 3 wherein the hydrophilic sheet is treated by a method selected from the group consisting of oxidation, sulfonation, graft polymerization and plasma irradiation. 6. The sealed lead-acid battery of claim 1, claim 2, or claim 3 wherein the first separator is shaped into an envelope by heat-sealing. 7. The sealed lead-acid battery of claim 1, claim 2, or claim 3 wherein the first separator has a thickness in the range of 0.1-0.7 mm, and said second separator has a thickness in the range of 2.0-2.5 mm. 8. The sealed lead-acid battery of claim 1, claim 2, or claim 3 wherein said first separator is non-woven cloth. 9. The sealed lead-acid battery of claim 1, claim 2, or claim 3 wherein said first electrode is a negative electrode. 10. The sealed lead-acid battery of claim 1, claim 2, or claim 3 wherein hydrophilic treated sheet is sulfonated. 11. The sealed lead-acid battery of claim 1, claim 2, or claim 3 wherein the first separator comprises is a non-woven cloth comprising a mixture of polyethylene and polypropylene fiber. 12. The sealed lead-acid battery of claim 1, claim 2, or claim 3 wherein the electrolyte is sulfuric acid. 13. The sealed lead-acid battery of claim 1, claim 2, or claim 3 wherein the first electrode and the second electrode are paste type electrodes.
