A contact safety and trigger mechanism for use with a pneumatic fastener in order to permit efficient pneumatic fastener actuation mode selection. A rotating rod is included in a contact safety assembly which is constructed to slide toward/away from a driver housing, defining a piston for securing a fastener disposed within the piston's path of travel. The rotating rod includes a first shoulder or ledge and a second shoulder which is off-set from the first shoulder. The rod may be rotated in order to orientate the selected shoulder, to function as a stop for a pivoting trigger assembly, which is constructed to contact a pneumatic valve, to initiate a fastening event in-which a fastener is driven into a workpiece. The configuration of the rotating rod permits for selection between a contact actuation mode wherein movement of the contact safety initiates securing of a fastener and a sequential actuation mode in which the trigger assembly is manipulated by a user to trigger securing of a fastener after the contact safety has be depressed towards the driver housing.

The fastener device of claim 1, wherein the fastener device is selected from the group consisting of a pneumatic fastener and a combustion fastener. 3. The fastener device of claim 1, further comprising a toggle switch engaged with the rod, the toggle switch being constructed to rotate the rod. 4. The fastener device of claim 3, wherein the toggle switch is constructed to maintain a fixed position with respect to the driver housing. 5. The fastener device of claim 3, wherein the toggle switch is configured to releaseably lock when disposed in at least one of the contact actuation orientation and the sequential actuation orientation. 6. The fastener device of claim 1, wherein the contact actuation orientation and the sequential actuation orientation are obtained by rotating the rod approximately 180째 (one hundred eighty degrees). 7. The fastener device of claim 1, further comprising a depth adjustment system including a thumb wheel in threaded engagement with at least one of the rod or a pivot pin included in the intermediate linkage, the depth adjustment system being configured to change the total length of the contact safety assembly in order to vary the depth to which the fastener will be driven by the fastener device. 8. The fastener device of claim 7, wherein the depth adjustment system further comprises a washer for frictionally engaging with the thumb wheel in order to retain the thumb wheel in a desired longitudinal position along at least one of the rod or the pivot pin and a biasing device for urging the washer into engagement with the thumb wheel. 9. The fastener device of claim 1, wherein at least one of the trigger assembly or the contact safety assembly are configured to prevent a second fastening event when the rod is disposed in a sequential actuation orientation. 10. A pneumatic fastener, having a driver housing defining a driving chamber, the driver housing for encompassing a reciprocating piston for securing a fastener and a pneumatic valve for controlling the flow of compressed air entering the driving chamber, comprising: a contact safety assembly being constructed to slide with respect to the driver housing upon contacting with a workpiece into which a fastener is to be driven, the contact safety assembly including: a contact member disposed generally adjacent an end of the driver housing through which the fastener to be secured will exit the driver housing; an intermediate linkage coupled to the contact member; and a rod pivotally operable with respect to the intermediate linkage, the rod having a first shoulder and a second shoulder, the second shoulder being constructed at a second distance from an end of the rod opposite the intermediate linkage, the second distance being further from the end of the rod than the first shoulder; and a trigger assembly, the trigger assembly including: a trigger pivotally coupled to the driver housing, the trigger being configured to contact with at least one of the first shoulder or the second shoulder; and a trigger lever pivotally mounted to the trigger, generally opposite the pivotal coupling between the trigger and the driver housing, the trigger lever being configured to engage with the rod to prevent a fastening event from occurring if the trigger lever is in contact with the pneumatic valve prior to the contact member contacting a workpiece, when the second shoulder of the rod is directed towards the trigger, wherein the rod is configured to rotate with respect to the trigger assembly to achieve at least one of a contact actuation orientation and a sequential actuation orientation. 11. The pneumatic fastener of claim 10, further comprising a toggle switch engaged with the rod, the toggle switch being constructed to rotate the rod. 12. The pneumatic fastener of claim 11, wherein the toggle switch is constructed to maintain a fixed position with respect to the driver housing. 13. The pneumatic fastener of claim 11, wherein the toggle switch is configured to releaseably lock when disposed in at least one of the contact actuation orientation and the sequential actuation orientation. 14. The pneumatic fastener of claim 10, wherein the contact actuation orientation and the sequential actuation orientation are obtained by rotating the rod approximately 180째 (one hundred eighty degrees). 15. The pneumatic fastener of claim 10, further comprising a depth adjustment system including a thumb wheel in threaded engagement with at least one of the rod or a pivot pin included in the intermediate linkage, the depth adjustment system being configured to change the total length of the contact safety assembly in order to vary the depth to which the fastener will be driven by the reciprocating piston. 16. The pneumatic fastener of claim 15, wherein the depth adjustment system further comprises a washer for frictionally engaging with the thumb wheel in order to retain the thumb wheel in a desired longitudinal position along at least one of the rod or the pivot pin and a biasing device for urging the washer into engagement with the thumb wheel. 17.
