A piston ring comprising a piston ring substrate, wherein said piston ring substrate comprises at least 50 volume %, of intermetallic alloy, based on the total volume of the piston ring substrate, and the intermetallic alloy is a mixture of FeAl and Fe 3Al. 2. The piston ring according to claim 1, wherein said piston ring substrate comprises at least 70 volume %, of intermetallic alloy, based on the total volume of the piston ring substrate. 3. The piston ring according to claim 1, wherein said piston ring substrate has a coating. 4. The piston ring according to claim 3, wherein said coating of said piston ring substrate comprises at least one intermetallic alloy. 5. The piston ring according to claim 3, which consists of the substrate and the coating, the coating forms an outer surface of the piston ring. 6. The piston ring according to claim 1, wherein the substrate comprises a matrix formed by the FeAl and Fe3Al, and a hard phase and a mixed zone around the hard phase embedded in the matrix. 7. The piston ring according to claim 1, which consists of the substrate. 8. The piston ring, according to claim 1, wherein the piston ring substrate is a casting. 9. The piston ring according to claim 8, which comprises a coating on the piston ring substrate, the coating comprises at least one intermetallic alloy and forms an outer surface of the piston ring. 10. The piston ring according to claim 1, wherein the piston ring does not have a coating on the substrate. 11. A piston ring comprising a coating of a wear-resistant composite composition, the wear-resistant composite composition comprising a ceramic compound and at least 50 volume %, of intermetallic alloy, based on the total volume of the wear-resistant composition, wherein the intermetallic alloy is a mixture of FeAl and Fe3Al. 12. The piston ring according to claim 11, wherein said composition comprises a matrix formed by the intermetallic alloy. 13. The piston ring according claim 12, wherein the ceramic compound is Cr3C2. 14. The piston ring according to claim 12, wherein the ceramic compound is a chromium oxide. 15. The piston ring according to claim 12, wherein the ceramic compound is SiC. 16. The piston ring according to claim 12, wherein the ceramic compound is aluminum oxide. 17. The piston ring according to claim 11, wherein the composition comprises between 70-99 volume % of intermetallic alloy based on the total volume of the wear-resistant composition. 18. The piston ring according to claim 11, wherein the wear-resistant composite composition comprises a matrix formed by of the FeAl and Fe3Al, and a hard phase and a mixed zone around the hard phase embedded in the matrix. 19. The piston ring according to claim 11, which is formed by the process of applying a mixture comprising the ceramic compound and FeAl and Fe3Al onto a substrate to produce the coating of the wear-resistant composite composition which forms an outer surface of the piston ring. 20. A piston ring comprising a wear-resistant composite composition, the wear-resistant composite composition comprising a ceramic compound and at least 50 volume %, of intermetallic alloy, based on the total volume of the wear-resistant composite composition, wherein the intermetallic alloy is at least one of FeAl and Fe3Al, the wear-resistant composite composition comprises a matrix formed by at least one of the FeAl and Fe3Al, and a hard phase and a mixed zone around the hard phase embedded in the matrix. 21. The piston ring according to claim 20, wherein the ceramic compound is Cr3C2. 22. The piston ring according to claim 20, wherein the ceramic compound is a chromium oxide. 23. The piston ring according to claim 20, wherein the ceramic compound is SiC. 24. The piston ring according to claim 20, wherein the ceramic compound is aluminum oxide. 25. The piston ring according to claim 20, wherein the composition comprises between 70-99 volume % of intermetallic alloy based on the total volume of the wear-resistant composition.
