Mathematical relationship for ingredients for fiber glass compositions are used to identify properties of the glass. In particular the forming temperature and delta T. In one embodiment, the mathematical relationship of the ingredients is of a generic quaternary SiO2, CaO, Al2O3 and MgO glass system. The relationship of SiO2, CaO, Al2O3 and MgO of interest include RO=CaO+MgO, SiO2/CaO, SiO2/RO, SiO2/Al 2O3; Al2O3/CaO; SiO2+Al2 O3; SiO2--RO and Al2O3/RO or RO/Al 2O3 when other ingredients or components are added to the glass batch materials to alter the forming and/or liquidus temperatures of the glass, for example Na2O, Li2O, K2O and B2O3 the following mathematical relationships are of interest, (SiO2+Al2O3)/(R2O+RO+B2O 3) where RO is as previously defined and R2O=Na2O+Li 2O+K2O. Each of the compositional features of the glass identified above reflects the relative balance between the fluidity (i.e. viscosity) of the glass melt and its crystallization potential. Low boron or boron free fiber glass compositions having a low forming temperature, e.g. 1178 to 1240째 C. and a delta T greater than 50째 C. in order that the composition can be processed at a low temperature while reducing the possibility of devitrification of the molten glass in the bushing area during a glass fiber forming operation. Fiber glass compositions having low boron, e.g. less than 5.10 percent by weight has a low forming temperature, e.g. 1193 to 1240째 C. and a delta T greater than 50째 C.

A glass composition comprising: SiO2 57 to 58.2 percent by weight; Al2O3 12 to 13.7 percent by weight; CaO 23.5 to 24.5 percent by weight; MgO 2 to 3 percent by weight; TiO2 0.5 to 2 percent by weight; Na2O 0 to 1 percent by weight; Li2O 0 to less than 0.1 percent by weight; Na2O + K2O + Li2O 0 to 1 percent by weight; Fe2O3 0.05 to 0.4 percent by weight; B2O3 0 to 0.05 percent by weight; fluorine no greater than 0.30 percent by weight; wherein the glass composition has a log 3 forming temperature no greater than 1240째 C., and the difference between the log 3 forming temperature and the liquidus temperature is at least 50째 C. 2. A glass composition comprising: SiO2 57 to less than 59 percent by weight; Al2O3 12 to 14 percent by weight; CaO 23 to 25 percent by weight; MgO 1 to 3 percent by weight; TiO2 0 to 2 percent by weight; Na2O 0 to 1.25 percent by weight; Li2O 0 to less than 0.1 percent by weight; Na2O + K2O + Li2O 0 to 1.25 percent by weight; Fe2O3 up to 0.5 percent by weight; B2O3 0 to 0.05 percent by weight; fluorine no greater than 0.30 percent by weight; wherein the glass composition has a log 3 forming temperature no greater than 1240째 C., and the difference between the log 3 forming temperature and the liquidus temperature is at least 50째 C. 3. The glass composition according to claim 2, wherein the TiO2 content is 0.5 to 1.5 percent by weight. 4. The glass composition according to claim 2, wherein the glass composition is essentially free of B2O3. 5. The glass composition according to claim 2, wherein the Fe2O3 content is 0.1 to 0.4 percent by weight. 6. The glass composition according to claim 2, wherein the ratio of SiO2 to (CaO+MgO) is no greater than 2.55. 7. The glass composition according to claim 2, wherein the ratio of SiO2 to (CaO+MgO) is from 1.9 to 2.4. 8. The glass composition according to claim 2, wherein (CaO+ MgO) is from 26 to 28 percent by weight. 9. The glass composition according to claim 2, wherein the composition is essentially free of Li2O. 10. The glass composition according to claim 2, wherein (Na2O+K2O+Li2O) is no greater about 1.03 percent by weight. 11. The glass composition according to claim 2, wherein (Na2O+K2O+Li2O) is no greater than 1 percent by weight. 12. The glass composition according to claim 2, wherein the difference between the log 3 forming temperature and the liquidus temperature is at least 60째 C. 13. The glass composition according to claim 1 wherein the SiO2 is less than 58 percent by weight.
