A system is also described and claimed.

A method for protecting images distributed over a network, comprising: retrieving, at an administrative computer, a list of a plurality of web pages on a server computer web site and a list of a plurality of images that are referenced within any of the plurality of web pages, the administrative computer being remote from the server computer and communicatively coupled therewith; displaying, by the administrative computer, the list of web pages and the list of images to a user; generating, by the administrative computer, protection status information in response to selection by the user of at least one web page from the list of web pages or at least one image from the list of images, the protection status information designating the at least one web page selected by the user as being protected web pages, or the at least one image selected by the user as being protected images; further displaying, by the administrative computer, characteristic icons to indicate (i) web pages all of whose referenced images are protected, (ii) web pages some but not all of whose referenced images are protected, and (iii) web pages none of whose referenced images are protected; sending the protection status information from the administrative computer to the server computer; downloading, by a client computer, one of the plurality of web pages from the server computer web site, the downloaded web page referencing an image; and copy-protecting the referenced image by copy-protection software running on the client computer, if the referenced image is designated by the protection status information as being protected. 2. The method of claim 1 further comprising modifying protection status of at least one web page or at least one image, and wherein said sending sends modified protection status information to the server computer. 3. The method of claim 1 further comprising recording the protection status information in a protection status database. 4. A system for protecting images distributed over a network, comprising: a user interface within an administrative computer, (a) displaying a list of a plurality of web pages on a server computer web site, and a list of images that are referenced within any of the plurality of web pages, and (b) displaying characteristic icons to indicate (i) web pages all of whose referenced images are protected, (ii) web pages some but not all of whose referenced images are protected, and (iii) web pages none of whose referenced images are protected, the administrative computer being remote from the server computer and communicatively coupled therewith; a protection status manager within the administrative computer, generating protection status information in response to selection by a user of at least one web page from the list of web pages or at least one image from the list of images, the protection status information designating the at least one web page selected by the user as being protected web pages or the at least one image selected by the user as being protected images; a transmitter within the administrative computer, sending the protection status information from the administrative computer to the server computer; and a copy-protection module residing on a client computer, copy-protecting an image referenced within a web page downloaded from the server computer to the client computer if the referenced image is designated by the protection status information as being protected. 5. The system of claim 4 wherein said protection status manager modifies protection status of at least one web page or at least one image, and wherein said transmitter sends modified protection status information to the server computer. 6. The system of claim 4 further comprising a database manager for recording the protection status information in a protection status database. 7. A method for protecting images distributed over a network, comprising: retrieving, at an administrative computer, a list of a plurality of web pages on a server computer web site, and a list of images that are referenced within any of the plurality of web pages, the administrative computer being remote from the server computer and communicatively coupled therewith; displaying, by the administrative computer, the list of web pages and the list of images to a user; generating, by the administrative computer, protection status information in response to selection by the user of at least one web page from the list of web pages or at least one image from the list of images, the protection status information designating the at least one web page selected by the user as being protected web pages or the at least one image selected by the user as being protected images; further displaying, by the administrative computer, characteristic icons to indicate (i) web pages all of whose referenced images are protected, (ii) web pages some but not all of whose referenced images are protected, and (iii) web pages none of whose referenced images are protected; sending the protection status information from the administrative computer to the server computer; and encrypting an image on the server computer, if the image is designated by the protection status information as being protected. 8. The method of claim 7 further comprising, in response to a request from a client computer to download a web page that references an unencrypted image residing on the server computer, transmitting an encrypted image to the client computer instead of the referenced unencrypted image, if the referenced unencrypted image is designated by the protection status information as being protected. 9. The method of claim 8 further comprising decrypting the encrypted image by decoding software running on the client computer, subsequent to the client computer receiving the encrypted image from the server computer. 10. A system for protecting images distributed over a network, comprising: a user interface within an administrative computer, (a) displaying a list of a plurality of web pages on a server computer web site, and list of a plurality of images that are referenced within any of the plurality of web pages, and (b) displaying characteristic icons to indicate (i) web pages all of whose referenced images are protected, (ii) web pages some but not all of whose referenced images are protected, and (iii) web pages none of whose referenced images are protected, the administrative computer being remote from the server computer and communicatively coupled therewith; a protection status manager within the administrative computer, generating protection status information in response to selection by a user of at least one web page from the list of web pages or at least one image from the list of images, the protection status information designating the at least one web page selected by the user as being protected web pages or the at least one image selected by the user as being protected images; a transmitter within the administrative computer, sending the protection status information from the administrative computer to the server computer; and an encoder encrypting at least one image on the server computer, if the at least one image is designated by the protection status information as being protected. 11. The system of claim 10 further comprising an image copy protector on the server computer for controlling the server computer to transmit, in response to receiving a request from a client computer to download a web page that references an unencrypted image on the server computer, an encrypted image instead of the referenced unencrypted image, if the referenced unencrypted image is designated by the protection status information as being protected. 12. The system of claim 11 further comprising a decoder residing on the client computer, for decrypting the encrypted image received by the client computer from the server computer. 13. A method for protecting images distributed over a network, comprising: retrieving, at an administrative computer, a list of a plurality of web pages on a server computer web site, and a list of a plurality of images that are referenced within any of the plurality of web pages, the administrative computer being remote from the server computer and communicatively coupled therewith; displaying, by the administrative computer, the list of web pages and the list of images to a user; generating, by the administrative computer, protection status information in response to selection by the user of at least one web page from the list of web pages or at least one image from the list of images, the protection status information designating the at least one web page selected by the user as being protected web pages or the at least one image selected by the user as being protected images; further displaying, by the administrative computer, characteristic icons to indicate (i) web pages all of whose referenced images are protected, (ii) web pages some but not all of whose referenced images are protected, and (iii) web pages none of whose referenced images are protected; sending the protection status information from the administrative computer to the server computer; and in response to a request from a client computer to download a web page that references an unencrypted image residing on the server computer, transmitting an encrypted image to the client computer instead of the referenced unencrypted image, if the referenced unencrypted image is designated by the protection status as being protected. 14. A system for protecting images distributed over a network, comprising: a user interface within an administrative computer, (a) displaying a list of a plurality of web pages on a server computer web site, and list of a plurality of images that are referenced within any of the plurality of web pages, and (b) for displaying characteristic icons to indicate (i) web pages all of whose referenced images are protected, (ii) web pages some but not all of whose referenced images are protected, and (iii) web pages none of whose referenced images are protected, the administrative computer being remote from the server computer and communicatively coupled therewith; a protection status manager within the administrative computer, generating protection status information in response to selection by a user of at least one web page from the list of web pages or at least one image from the list of images, the protection status information designating the at least one web page selected by the user as being protected web pages or the at least one image selected by the user as being protected images; a transmitter within the administrative computer, sending the protection status information from the administrative computer to the server computer; and an image copy protector on the server computer controlling the server computer to transmit, in response to receiving a request from a client computer to download a web page that references an unencrypted image on the server computer, an encrypted image instead of the referenced unencrypted image, if the referenced unencrypted image is designated by the protection status information as being protected. 15. The method of claim 1 wherein the copy-protection software running on the client computer blocks the ability to capture an image being displayed on a computer screen. 16. The system of claim 4 wherein the copy-protection module residing on the client computer blocks the ability to capture an image being displayed on a computer screen. 17. A method of protecting images distributed over a network, comprising: retrieving, at an administrative computer, a list of a plurality of web pages on a server computer web site, and a list of a plurality of images that are referenced within any of the plurality of web pages, the administrative computer being remote from the server computer and communicatively coupled therewith; displaying, by the administrative computer, the list of web pages and the list of images to a user; generating, by the administrative computer, protection status information in response to selection by the user of at least one web page from the list of web pages or at least one image from the list of images, the protection status information designating the at least one web page selected by the user as being protected web pages, or the at least one image selected by the user as being protected images; further displaying, by the administrative computer, characteristic icons to indicate (i) web pages all of whose referenced images are protected, (ii) web pages some but not all of whose referenced images are protected, and (iii) web pages none of whose referenced images are protected; sending the protection status information from the administrative computer to the server computer; receiving, by the server computer, a request from a client computer for a web page that references an image that is designated by the protection status information as being protected; and sending a substitute image from the server computer to the client computer in response to the request. 18. A system for protecting images distributed over a network, comprising: a user interface within an administrative computer, (a) displaying a list of a plurality of web pages on a server computer web site, and a list of a plurality of images that are referenced within any of the plurality of web pages, and (b) for displaying characteristic icons to indicate (i) web pages all of whose referenced images are protected, (ii) web pages some but not all of whose referenced images are protected, and (iii) web pages none of whose referenced images are protected, the administrative computer being remote from the server computer and communicatively coupled therewith; a protection status manager within the administrative computer, generating protection status information in response to selection by a user of at least one web page from the list of web pages or at least one image from the list of images, the protection status information designating the at least one web page selected by the user as being protected web pages, or the at least one image selected by the user as being protected images; a transmitter within the administrative computer, sending the protection status information from the administrative computer to the server computer; and an image copy protector on the server computer controlling the server computer to send a substitute image to a client computer, in response to receiving a request from the client computer for a web page that references an image that is designated by the protection status information as being protected.
