A spinning reel slot machine comprises a plurality of mechanical rotatable reels and a video display. In response to a wager, the reels are rotated and stopped to randomly place symbols on the reels in visual association with a display area. The video display provides a video image superimposed upon the reels. The video image may be interactive with the reels and include such graphics as payout values, a pay table, pay lines, bonus game features, special effects, thematic scenery, and instructional information.

What is claimed is: 1. A gaming machine, comprising: a housing; a mechanical display device located at a first position relative to the housing and displaying a plurality of symbols indicating a randomly selected outcome of a wagering game; and a display arrangement located at a second position relative to the housing, the second position being at a distance from the first position, the display arrangement being physically distinct from the mechanical display device and for providing a video image including indicia of the wagering game, the indicia overlaying one or more of the plurality of symbols and interacting with the one or more of the plurality of symbols. 2. The machine of claim 1, wherein the mechanical display device includes a plurality of mechanical rotatable reels that, in response to a wager, are rotated and stopped to randomly place the plurality of symbols on the reels in visual association with a display area. 3. The machine of claim 1, wherein the display arrangement includes a flat panel transmissive video display positioned in front of the mechanical display device. 4. The machine of claim 1, further including a controller located within the housing and coupled to the mechanical display device and the display arrangement, the controller controlling the display of the plurality of symbols and selectively controlling the video image on the display arrangement to interact with the at least one of the plurality of symbols. 5. The machine of claim 1, wherein the mechanical display device includes a physical element for displaying the plurality of symbols. 6. The machine of claim 5, wherein the physical element is movable. 7. The machine of claim 1, wherein the video image is a virtual image. 8. The machine of claim 7, wherein the virtual image is a three-dimensional image. 9. The machine of claim 7, wherein the virtual image is generally parallel to a front surface of the mechanical display device. 10. The machine of claim 7, wherein the display arrangement includes a video display and a partially reflective mirror, the video display and the partially reflective mirror being relatively positioned to project the virtual image in front of the mechanical display device between the mechanical display device and a player. 11. The machine of claim 10, wherein the virtual image appears to be suspended in front of the mechanical display device and is generally perpendicular to a front surface of the video display, and wherein the partially reflective mirror is generally angled relative to both the virtual image and the front surface of the video display. 12. A method of operating a gaming machine, comprising: receiving a wager to play a wagering game; displaying a plurality of symbols indicating a randomly selected outcome of the wagering game on a mechanical display device; and overlaying at least one of the plurality of symbols with a video image provided by a display arrangement that is distinct from the mechanical display device, the video image being located a predetermined distance from the mechanical display device and the video image including indicia of the wagering game and interacting with the at least one of the plurality of symbols. 13. The method of claim 12, wherein the displaying includes rotating and stopping a plurality of mechanical reels to randomly place the plurality of symbols on the reels in visual association with a display area. 14. The method of claim 12, wherein the display arrangement includes a flat panel transmissive video display positioned in front of the mechanical display device. 15. The method of claim 12, wherein the gaming machine includes a controller that is coupled to the mechanical display device and separately coupled to the display arrangement, and the overlaying includes selectively controlling, under the control of the controller, the video image to interact with the one of the plurality of symbols. 16. The method of claim 12, wherein the mechanical display device includes a physical element for displaying the plurality of symbols. 17. The method of claim 16, wherein the physical element is movable. 18. The method of claim 12, wherein the video image is a virtual image. 19. The method of claim 18, wherein the virtual image is a three-dimensional image. 20. The method of claim 18, wherein the virtual image is generally parallel to a front surface of the mechanical display device. 21. The method of claim 18, wherein the display arrangement includes a video display and a partially reflective mirror, the video display and the partially reflective mirror being relatively positioned to project the virtual image in front of the mechanical display device between the mechanical display device and a player. 22. The method of claim 21, wherein the virtual image appears to be suspended in front of the mechanical display device and is generally perpendicular to a front surface of the video display, and wherein the partially reflective mirror is generally angled relative to both the virtual image and the front surface of the mechanical video display. 23. A gaming machine, comprising: a housing; a first mechanical display located within the housing and for displaying a plurality of symbols indicating a randomly selected outcome of the wagering game; a second display located within the housing and physically separate from the first mechanical display, the second display for providing a video image, the video image overlaying at least one of the plurality of symbols and interacting with the at least one of the plurality of symbols; and a controller located within the housing and coupled to the first mechanical display and the second display, the controller selectively controlling the video image to modify the at least one of the plurality of symbols. 24. The machine of claim 23, wherein the first mechanical display includes a plurality of mechanical rotatable reels that, in response to a wager, are rotated and stopped to randomly place the plurality of symbols on the reels in visual association with a display area. 25. The machine of claim 23, wherein the video image is a virtual image. 26. The machine of claim 25, the second display includes a video display and a partially reflective mirror, the video display and the partially reflective mirror being relatively positioned to project the virtual image in front of the first mechanical display between the first mechanical display and a player. 27. A gaming machine comprising: a housing; a first mechanical display at a first position relative to the housing for displaying a plurality of symbols indicating a randomly selected outcome of a wagering game; and a second display located at a second position relative to the housing, the second position being at a distance from the first position, the second display for providing a video image physically spaced from one or more of the plurality of symbols, the video image overlaying the one or more of the plurality of symbols and interacting with the one or more of the plurality of symbols, such that the one or more of the plurality of symbols is modified. 28. The machine of claim 27, further including a controller located within the housing and coupled to the first mechanical display and the second display, the controller controlling the display of the plurality of symbols and selectively controlling the video image on the second display to interact with the one of the plurality of symbols. 29. The machine of claim 27, wherein the first mechanical display includes a mechanical reel for displaying the first indicia. 30. The machine of claim 29, further including a touch screen adjacent to the second display, the touch screen enabling a user to select options associated with the wagering game. 31. A method of operating a gaming machine having a controller, comprising: receiving a wager to play a wagering game; displaying, under the control of the controller, a plurality of symbols indicating a randomly selected outcome of the wagering game on a first mechanical display; and selectively displaying, under the control of the controller, a video image on a second display that is physically distinct from the first mechanical display, the second display being separately controllable by the controller relative to the first mechanical display, the video image overlaying at least one of the plurality of symbols and interacting with the one of the plurality of symbols. 32. The method of claim 31, wherein the displaying on the first mechanical display includes rotating and stopping a plurality of mechanical reels to randomly place the plurality of symbols on the reels in visual association with a display area.
