A support system for suspending a bird feeder, comprising: a first support member having an upper end and a lower end, a second support member having an upper end and a lower end, the upper end of the first support member being constructed and arranged to support the second support member; a clamping assembly disposed at the lower end of the first support member, the clamping assembly including an upper clamp member and a lower clamp member, each of the upper and lower clamp members being adjustably spaced apart and further including corresponding apertures for receiving the first support member therein, each of the upper and lower clamp members further including spaced apart adjustable jaws for adjusting the tension on the first support member such that the first support member is moveable within the apertures from a first position to a second position; wherein the lower end of the second support member has an internal diameter that is greater than the external diameter of the upper end of the first support member, the lower end of the second support member being sized and dimensioned to be slidably received onto and engaged with the upper end of the first support member; further including a retaining device, wherein at least the upper end of the second support member includes a hollow section having an internal diameter, the hollow section being sized and dimensioned to receive said retaining device therein; wherein the retaining device includes an extension member sized and dimensioned to be received in the hollow section; wherein the retaining device includes a first, open position for receiving the bird feeder and a second closed position for retaining the bird feeder. 2. The support system of claim 1, wherein the retaining device includes a stationary support member and a movable support member, the stationary support member including the extension member. 3. The support system of claim 2, wherein the movable support member is concentrically mounted in the stationary support member. 4. The support system of claim 3, wherein the stationary support member includes a hook having a base and a terminating end defining a first gap therebetween, and the movable member includes at least one arm with a first end and a second end defining a second gap therebetween, wherein when the moveable member is movable to position the first and second gaps in an open position the first and second gaps are aligned, and in a closed position the first and second gaps are misaligned. 5. The support system of claim 4, wherein the movable member is rotatably movable between the first and second positions. 6. A support system for suspending a bird feeder, comprising: a first support member having an upper end and a lower end, a second support member having an upper end and a lower end, the upper end of the first support member being constructed and arranged to support the second support member; at least the upper end of the second support member including a hollow section having an internal diameter; a retaining device, the retaining device including an extension member sized and dimensioned to be received in the hollow section of the second support member; said retaining device including means for supporting and retaining the bird feeder; and a clamping assembly disposed at the lower end of the first support member, the clamping assembly including an upper clamp member and a lower clamp member, each of the upper and lower clamp members being adjustably spaced apart and further including corresponding apertures for receiving the first support member therein, each of the upper and lower clamp members further including spaced apart adjustable jaw means for adjusting the tension on the first support member such that the first support member is moveable within the apertures from a first position to a second position; wherein said retaining device includes a fixed support member and a movable support member that includes a first open position for receiving the bird feeder and a second closed position for retaining the bird feeder. 7. The support system of claim 6 wherein said jaw means each comprise a pair of spaced apart adjustable jaws. 8. The support system of claim 7 further including a pair of fastening mechanisms, one connected with each pair of adjustable jaws for opening and closing the respective jaws. 9. The support system of claim 6 wherein the lower end of the second support member has an internal diameter that is greater than the external diameter of the upper end of the first support member, the lower end of the second support member being sized and dimensioned to be slidably received onto and engaged with the upper end of the first support member. 10. A support system for suspending a bird feeder, comprising: a tubular support member having a first portion that extends substantially upright and a second portion that is substantially curved terminating at a free downwardly directed support end of the tubular support member; a clamping assembly disposed at the lower end of the tubular support member, the clamping assembly including an upper clamp member and a lower clamp member, each of the upper and lower clamp members being adjustably spaced apart and further including corresponding apertures for receiving the first support member therein, each of the upper and lower clamp members further including at least one adjustable jaw for adjusting the tension on the tubular support member such that the support member is moveable within the apertures from a first position to a second position; and a retaining device for holding the bird feeder and supported at the free end of the tubular support member; said retaining device having a first, open position for receiving the bird feeder and a second closed position for retaining the bird feeder, and including a stationary member and a movable member, the movable member adapted to move between open and closed positions; wherein the stationary member includes a hook having a base and a terminating end defining a first gap therebetween, and the movable member includes at least one arm with a first end and a second end defining a second gap therebetween, wherein when the moveable member is movable to position the first and second gaps in the open position the first and second gaps are aligned, and in the closed position the first and second gaps are misaligned. 11. The support system of claim 10, wherein the movable member is concentrically mounted in the stationary member. 12. The support system of claim 10, wherein the movable member is rotatably movable between the open and closed positions. 13. A support system for suspending a bird feeder, comprising: a first support member having an upper end and a lower end, a second support member having opposite first and second ends, the upper end of the first support member being constructed and arranged to support the second support member; a clamping assembly disposed for supporting the lower end of the first support member and having clamped and unclamped positions; said clamping assembly including an upper clamp member and a lower clamp member, each of the upper and lower clamp members being adjustably spaced apart and further including corresponding apertures for receiving the first support member therein; each of the upper and lower clamp members further including a pair of spaced apart adjustable jaws for adjusting the tension on the first support member such that the first support member is moveable within the apertures from a first position to a second position; said clamping assembly being constructed and arranged to be disposed on opposite sides of a support rail from which the clamping assembly is to be held; both said first and second support members being of hollow tubular construction; said first support member being of substantially straight construction having a longitudinal axis extending between its upper and lower ends and disposed by said clamping assembly in a substantially vertical orientation from said support rail; said second support member being of substantially curved construction having opposite ends that are respectively directed in a substantially downward direction when the first end of the second support member is supported from the upper end of the first support member; a retaining device supported at the second end of the second support member, said retaining device for releasably supporting and retaining said bird feeder; said first support member positioned by said clamping assembly so as to enable, upon unclamping, rotation of said first support member relative to said clamping assembly about the longitudinal axis of the first support member and/or translation of said first support member relative to said clamping assembly in the direction of said longitudinal axis. 14. The support system of claim 13, wherein the first end of the second support member includes a hollow portion having an internal diameter, the hollow portion being sized and dimensioned to receive the upper end of the first support member therein. 15. The support system of claim 14, wherein the upper end of the first support member has an external diameter that is smaller than the internal diameter of the second support member, the upper end of the first support member being sized and dimensioned to be slidably received into and engaged with the first end of the second support member. 16. The support system of claim 13, further including a pair of fastening mechanisms, one connected with each pair of adjustable jaws for opening and closing the respective jaws. 17. The support system of claim 13, wherein the second end of the second support member includes a hollow section having an internal diameter, the hollow section being sized and dimensioned to receive said retaining device therein. 18. The support system of claim 17, wherein the retaining device includes an extension member sized and dimensioned to be received in the hollow section. 19. The support system of claim 18, wherein the retaining device includes a first, open position for receiving the bird feeder and a second closed position for retaining the bird feeder. 20. The support system of claim 19, wherein the retaining device includes a stationary support member and a movable support member, the stationary support member including the extension member; wherein the movable support member is concentrically mounted in the stationary support member. 21. The support system of claim 20, wherein the stationary support member includes a hook having a base and a terminating end defining a first gap therebetween, and the movable member includes at least one arm with a first end and a second end defining a second gap therebetween, wherein when the moveable member is movable to position the first and second gaps in an open position the first and second gaps are aligned, and in a closed position the first and second gaps are misaligned.
