Methods for making electronic devices with small functional elements supported on a carrier are presented. One method of making an electronic assembly is by first providing the following: a web of flexible material having a plurality of recesses, where each of the recesses containing an RFID chip, a flexible substrate having antennas, straps from the web by a web process, where each of the straps includes at least one RFID chip and a portion of the flexible material. The electronic assembly is formed by attaching the straps to the antennas so that each of the straps is coupled to one of the antennas and the density of the RFID chips on the web is higher than a density of the antennas on the flexible substrate. Other methods of making electronic devices with small functional elements supported on a carrier are disclosed.

A new method of making an electronic assembly comprising: providing a first web of flexible material having a plurality of recesses, each of the recesses containing an Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) chip; providing a flexible substrate having antennas thereon; providing straps from the first web by a web process, each of the straps including at least one RFID chip and a portion of the flexible material; attaching the straps to the antennas, so that each of the straps is coupled to one of the antennas, wherein a density of the RFID chips on the first web is higher than a density of the antennas on the flexible substrate. 2. The method of claim 1 wherein the flexible material is one of polyether sulfone, polyester terephthalate, polycarbonate, polybutylene terephthalate, polyphenylene sulfide, polypropylene, polyester, aramid, polyamide, polyimide, polyetherimide, polyvinyl chloride, polypropylene sulfate, and acrylonitrile butadiene styrene. 3. The method of claim 1 wherein the antennas are screen printed on the flexible substrate. 4. The method of claim 1 wherein a strap is smaller in size than an antenna. 5. A method of making an electronic assembly comprising: providing a first web of flexible material having a plurality of RFID chips; providing a flexible substrate having antennas thereon; providing straps from the first web by a web process, each of the straps including at least one RFID chip and a portion of the flexible material; attaching the straps to the antennas, so that each of the straps is coupled to one of the antennas, wherein a density of the RFID chips on the first web is higher than a density of the antennas on the flexible substrate. 6. The method of claim 5 wherein the flexible material is one of polyether sulfone, polyester terephthalate, polycarbonate, polybutylene terephthalate, polyphenylene sulfide, polypropylene, polyester, aramid, polyamide, polyimide, polyetherimide, polyvinyl chloride, polypropylene sulfate, and acrylonitrile butadiene styrene. 7. The method of claim 5 wherein the antennas are screen printed on the flexible substrate. 8. The method of claim 5 wherein a strap is smaller in size than an antenna.
