Provided is a caliper extender, which fits over a tape measure blade, enabling accurate measurements to be taken of an inside dimension. Extender slides along blade and is positioned against one wall of the inside dimension. Blade is then repositioned flat against extender and a measurement reading is taken. A pointer may also be incorporated into extender to indicate a tape marking corresponding to an accurate measurement. In the alternative, a caliper extender is incorporated into a tape measure such that extender can be disengaged from a casing of tape measure, slid along a blade and a measurement reading taken through a window in a channel through which blade is installed.

What is claimed is: 1. A tape measure with caliper extender, comprising: a tape measure casing; a tape measure blade wound within the tape measure casing such that an end of the blade can be pulled from the casing for taking a measurement; and a tape measure blade extender configured to be removably attached to one edge of the tape measure casing, the tape measure blade extender, comprising: an extender body, a first edge of the extender body including an extension adapted to be received in a recess; and a tape measure blade guide coupled to the extender body, wherein the tape measure blade lies against the extender body and slides through the tape measure guide, such that, when the tape measure blade extender is removed from the tape measure casing, the extension on the first edge of the extender body, opposite the guide, is positioned in a recess defined by one side of an object to be measured and the pulled end of the tape measure blade is positioned against a second side of the object to be measured and a measurement taken based upon the length of the extender body with the extension and a marking of a set of markings on the tape measure blade adjacent the second edge of the extender body on the guide side of the extender body. 2. The tape measure of claim 1, the tape measure blade extender further comprising: a window in the tape measure blade guide through which the markings on the tape measure blade can be read; and a pointer positioned in the window; wherein the measurement is based upon a marking adjacent the pointer rather than a marking adjacent the second edge of the extender body. 3. The tape measure of claim 1, the tape measure blade comprising; a first set of markings for reading a measurement when the caliper extender is installed in the tape measure casing; and a second set of markings for reading a measurement in conjunction with the caliper extender when the caliper extender is removed from the tape measure casing. 4. The tape measure of claim 3, wherein each marking of the markings correspond to the distance from the end of the tape blade to the first edge of the extender body. 5. The tape measure of claim 1, wherein the object to be measured is an inside dimension. 6. The tape measure of claim 1, wherein the extension is detachable. 7. The tape measure of claim 1, wherein the extension is configurable by a user. 8. The tape measure of claim 1, wherein the extension comprises a protrusion adapted to be received in a hole so that the measurement taken includes the depth of the hole. 9. The tape measure of claim 1, wherein the extension tapers from the first edge of the extender body to a point so that the extension may positioned into corners. 10. A tape measure caliper extender, comprising: an extender body for use with a tape blade, a first end of the extender body including an extension adapted to be received in a recess; means for removably attaching the extender body to the tape blade; and means for taking an accurate measurement of an object to be measured when the extension of the extender body is positioned in a recess defined by a first end of an object to be measured and when an end of the tape blade is positioned against a second side of the object to be measured. 11. The tape measure caliper extender of claim 10, wherein the extension is detachable. 12. The tape measure caliper extender of claim 11, wherein the extension is configurable by a user. 13. The tape measure caliper extender of claim 10, wherein the extension comprises a protrusion adapted to be received in a hole so that the measurement includes the depth of the hole. 14. The tape measure of claim 10, wherein the extension tapers from the first end of the extender body to a point so that the extension may positioned into corners. 15. A method for increasing the accuracy of an inside measurement, comprising: attaching a detachable, moveable caliper to a tape measure blade, an end of the caliper including an extension adapted to be received in a recess; positioning the extension of the movable caliper in a recess defined by a first end of an object to be measured; positioning an end of the tape blade and against a second side of the object to be measured; and determining the inside measurement based upon the position of the detachable, movable caliper with respect to the tape blade. 16. The method for increasing the accuracy of an inside measurement of claim 15, wherein the extension is detachable. 17. The method for increasing the accuracy of an inside measurement of claim 15, wherein the extension is configurable by a user. 18. The method for increasing the accuracy of an inside measurement of claim 15, wherein the extension comprises a protrusion adapted to be received in a hole so that the measurement taken includes the depth of the hole. 19. The method for increasing the accuracy of an inside measurement of claim 15, wherein the extension tapers from the first edge of the extender body to a point so that the extension may positioned into corners.
