A network storage system includes a virtual file system ("VFS"), to manage the files of the network storage system, and a storage center that stores the files. The VFS and the storage center are separated, such that a client accesses the VFS to conduct file system operations and the client accesses the storage center to upload/download files. The client accesses the network storage system through one or more storage ports. The storage center includes a plurality of distributed object storage managers (DOSMs) and a storage cluster that includes a plurality of intelligent storage nodes. The network storage system includes additional storage centers at geographically disparate locations. The network storage system uses a multi-cast protocol to maintain file information at the DOSMs regarding files stored in the intelligent storage nodes, including files stored in disparate storage centers.

What is claimed is: 1. A storage port comprising: a network interface coupling the storage port to a remote storage over a wide area network and selectively accessing a file or a directory from the remote storage over the wide area network; a client interface coupled to a client computer, the client computer having a local file system with a format for local file system requests, the client interface mounting the storage port as a storage device for the client computer to provide access to the file or directory of the remote storage via a local file system request from the client computer, the local file system request including a file descriptor identifying a file in the local file system; a file request translator translating the local file system request to a network file system request having a different format from the format for local file system requests and being transmitted over the wide area network by the network interface to the remote storage, the network file system request including a wide area network address of the remote storage and a storage handler identifying the file to the remote storage, the file request translator includes a local file interception intercepting the local file system request and a storage system kernel process executing a thread of execution received from the local file interception and obtaining the storage handler; and a cache storing information at the storage port accessed from the remote storage. 2. The storage port of claim 1, wherein the cache storing information comprises the cache storing a file accessed from the remote storage. 3. The storage port of claim 2, the file request translator further determines whether the local file system request requests the file stored in the cache and translates the local file system request if the requested file is not stored in the cache. 4. The storage port of claim 1, wherein the cache storing information comprises the cache storing directory information for the remote storage. 5. The storage port of claim 4, the file request translator further determines whether the local file system request requests the directory information stored in the cache and translates the local file system request if the requested directory information is not stored in the cache. 6. The storage port of claim 1, the storage port comprising an electronic hardware device. 7. The storage port of claim 1, the storage port comprising software operating on a computer. 8. The storage port of claim 1, the client interface coupled to the client computer over a local area network. 9. The storage port of claim 1, the storage handler including a digital fingerprint derived from contents of the file. 10. The storage port of claim 9, wherein the storage handler includes a client identifier and a parent directory identifier. 11. A method comprising: mounting a storage port as a storage device for a client computer, the client computer having a local file system with a format for local file system requests, mounting the storage port including providing access to an object of a remote storage over a global communication network via a local file system request from the client computer, the local file system request including a file descriptor identifying the object to the local file system; translating the local file system request to a network file system request having a different format from the format for local file system requests to transmit over the global communication network, the network file system request including a global communication network address of the remote storage and a storage handler identifying the object to the remote storage, the translating comprising: intercepting, by a local file interception, the local file system request; executing, by a storage system kernel process, a thread of execution received from the local file interception; and obtaining, by the storage system kernel process, the storage handler; transmitting the network file system request to the remote storage; accessing the object from the remote storage; and storing in a temporary storage at the storage port the object accessed from the remote storage. 12. The method of claim 11, wherein storing the object in the temporary storage comprises storing a file accessed from the remote storage. 13. The method of claim 12, further comprising determining whether the local file system request references the file stored in the temporary storage, and if the local file system request references the file not stored in the temporary storage, translating the local file system request to the network file system request. 14. The method of claim 11, wherein storing the object in the temporary storage comprises storing directory information for the remote storage. 15. The method of claim 14, further comprising determining whether the local file system request references the directory information stored in the temporary storage, and if the local file system request references the directory information not stored in the temporary storage, translating the local file system request to the network file system request. 16. The method of claim 11, wherein mounting the storage port comprises coupling an electronic hardware device to the client computer over a local area network. 17. The method of claim 11, wherein mounting the storage port comprises mounting a software component on an operating environment of the client computer. 18. The method of claim 11, the storage handler including a digital fingerprint derived from contents of the object. 19. A system comprising: a storage center coupled to a public access, wide area network, the storage center storing files and having associated directory information for a storage center file system; a client computer having a local file system with a format for local file system requests and generating a local file system request, the local file system request including a file descriptor identifying a file to the local file system; a storage port mounted on the client computer as a storage device on the client computer, the storage port receiving the local file system request and translating the local file system request to a network file system request operated by the storage center file system to access a file or directory information from the storage center for the client computer over the network, the network file system request including a storage handler identifying the file to the storage center file system and having a different format from the format for local file system requests, the storage port including a file request translator, the file request translator including a local file interception intercepting the local file system request and a storage system kernel process executing a thread of execution received from the local file interception and obtaining the storage handler; and a cache coupled to the storage port and storing an accessed file or directory information. 20. The system of claim 6, further comprising an additional storage port coupled to the client computer and translating a local file system request to a network file system request operated by an additional storage center coupled to the network. 21. The system of claim 19, the storage port coupled to the client computer over a local area network and mounted on the client computer over the local area network. 22. The system of claim 19, the storage port further determines if the file or directory information of the local file system request is stored in the cache, and if the file or directory information of the local file system request is in the cache, accesses the file or the directory information directly from the cache and not access storage center. 23. The system of claim 19, the storage handler including a digital fingerprint derived from contents of the file.
