The static mixer comprising mixing elements for separating the material to be mixed into a plurality of streams and a mechanism for the layered junction of the same, a transversal edge and guide walls that extend at an angle to said transversal edge, as well as deflecting elements arranged at an angle to the longitudinal axis and provided with openings, includes mixing elements comprising a transversal edge and a following transversal guide wall and at least two guide walls with lateral end sections and at least one bottom section disposed between said guide walls, thereby defining at least one opening on one side of said transversal edge and at least two openings on the other side of said transversal edge. In addition to a high mixing efficiency and a low pressure drop, a mixer of this kind provides reduced dead volumes and is thus more effective than mixers of the prior art.

I claim: 1. A static mixer comprising a plurality of mixing elements for separating a material to be mixed into a plurality of streams, wherein each mixing element comprises: a transversal guide wall with a transversal edge, the transversal guide wall extending parallel to a longitudinal flow direction of the material to be mixed, and the transversal edge being an edge of the transversal guide wall that divides the material to be mixed; and first and second wall sections to further divide the material into six flow paths, each of the first and second wall sections including a guide wall perpendicular to the transversal guide wall, and an end section wall perpendicular to the guide wall, the end section wall being perpendicular to the transversal guide wall, and wherein the first and second wall sections are disposed opposite to each other. 2. The static mixer of claim 1, wherein a cross-section of the mixer is circular. 3. The static mixer of claim 1, wherein a cross-section of the mixer is rectangular. 4. The static mixer of claim 1, wherein the first and second wall sections are mirror images of each other such that the guide wall of the first wall section is parallel and opposite to the guide wall of the second wall section. 5. The static mixer of claim 4, wherein the end section wall of the first wall section is parallel to and in a same plane as the end section wall of the second wall section. 6. The static mixer of claim 1, wherein each guide wall ends in a separating edge, and the end section wall of the first wall section is positioned on an end of the guide wall of the first wall section opposite the separating edge. 7. The static mixer of claim 1, wherein each guide wall ends in a separating edge, and the end section wall of the second wall section is positioned on an end of the guide wall of the second wall section opposite the separating edge. 8. The static mixer of claim 1, wherein successive mixing elements are each arranged in a position rotated about the longitudinal axis. 9. The static mixer of claim 8, wherein the successive mixing elements are each rotated by 180 degrees about a longitudinal axis of the mixer. 10. A static mixer comprising a plurality of mixing elements for separating a material to be mixed into a plurality of streams, wherein each mixing element comprises: a transversal guide wall with a transversal edge, the transversal guide wall extending parallel to a longitudinal flow direction of the material to be mixed, and the transversal edge being an edge of the transversal guide wall that divides the material to be mixed; and first and second wall sections to further divide the material, each of the first and second wall sections including a guide wall perpendicular to the transversal guide wall, and an end section wall perpendicular to the guide wall, the end section wall being perpendicular to the transversal guide wall, wherein the first and second wall sections are disposed opposite to each other such that the guide wall of the first wall section is parallel and opposite to the guide wall of the second wall section, and wherein an opening is defined between the opposite guide walls of the first and second wall section on one side of the transversal edge and two openings are defined on an opposing side of the transversal edge. 11. The static mixer of claim 10, wherein successive mixing elements are each arranged in a position rotated about the longitudinal axis. 12. The static mixer of claim 11, wherein the successive mixing elements are each rotated by 180 degrees about a longitudinal axis of the mixer. 13. The static mixer of claim 10, wherein a height of the guide walls is greater than a height of the transversal guide wall. 14. The static mixer of claim 13, wherein the height of the guide walls is 1.1 to 2.0 times the height of the transversal guide wall. 15. The static mixer of claim 10, wherein a height of the transverse guide wall is greater than a height of the guide walls. 16. The static mixer of claim 15, wherein the height of the transversal guide wall is 1.5 to 2.0 times the height of the guide walls. 17. The static mixer of claim 10, wherein the material is divided into six flow paths.
