A reefing slider for providing improved line management and canopy deployment characteristics of a ram air inflated airfoil type canopy. During initial descent of the parachute the slider, secured by fastening elements, is held against the canopy in the upper reefing position where it mechanically restricts canopy deployment while giving the canopy time to achieve proper orientation following the drop from the launching aircraft. Upon sufficient air flow into the canopy cells, the fastening elements retaining the slider are broken, releasing the slider and enabling full opening of the canopy.

The combination as set forth in claim 1, wherein said fastening elements are calibrated break ties. 3. The combination as set forth in claim 1, wherein said slider has four corner grommets and said retaining devices adjacent said corner grommets include, for each respective retained corner grommet, a slider retaining loop secured to said slider adjacent said respective retained corner grommet, a canopy retaining loop secured to said canopy and positioned to correspond in placement to said respective retained corner grommet, and a breakable fastening element for securing said slider retaining loop to said canopy retaining loop. 4. The combination as set forth in claim 3, wherein said plurality of intermediary grommets include a multiplicity of retained grommets along a leading edge of said slider corresponding with the open leading edge of said canopy, each of said multiplicity of retained grommets having a respective retaining device adjacent thereto. 5. The combination as set forth in claim 1, wherein each of said retaining devices includes a slider retaining loop secured to said slider, a canopy retaining loop secured to said canopy, and a breakable fastening element for securing said slider retaining loop to said canopy retaining loop, said canopy retaining loop being secured adjacent a suspension line that passes through an associated retained grommet. 6. The combination as set forth in claim 5, wherein said canopy retaining loop includes a slider stop to prevent fabric of the canopy from passing through said associated retained grommet. 7. The combination as set forth in claim 6, wherein said canopy retaining loop is sewn to said canopy fabric and said slider stop is secured directly to said canopy retaining loop. 8. The combination as set forth in claim 6, wherein said slider stop is tied to said suspension line independently of said canopy fabric. 9. A ram air parachute comprising: a canopy having upper and lower airfoil surfaces separated by chordwise-extending ribs to form cells inflated by inflow of air at an open leading edge; suspension lines connecting the lower surface of the canopy to a load; a reefing slider including corner grommets, intermediary edge grommets between said corner grommets and a plurality of internal grommets through which the suspension lines extend; and a plurality of retaining devices adjacent at least some of said grommets that include slider retaining loops respectively secured to said slider adjacent each retained grommet, canopy retaining loops secured to said canopy in spaced relationship corresponding to a spacing of said retained grommets, and tie elements securing said slider retaining loops to said canopy retaining loops in corresponding pairs to mechanically secure said slider to said canopy and thereby retard descent of the slider relative to the canopy from an upper reefing position in which inflation of the canopy is restricted upon air drop, said slider being releasable from said canopy to descend along said suspension lines upon sufficient inflow of air to said cells to break said tie elements. 10. The ram air parachute as set forth in claim 9, wherein said slider is generally rectangular and has four corner grommets, each of said corner grommets being retained with a respective retaining device adjacent thereto. 11. The ram air parachute as set forth in claim 10, wherein said intermediary edge grommets include a multiplicity of retained grommets along a leading edge of said slider corresponding with the open leading edge of said canopy, each of said multiplicity of retained grommets having a respective retaining device adjacent thereto. 12. The ram air parachute as set forth in claim 11, wherein said retaining devices adjacent said retained grommets include, for each respective retained grommet, a slider retaining loop secured to said slider adjacent said respective retained grommet, a canopy retaining loop secured to said canopy and positioned to correspond in placement to said respective retained grommet, and a tie element for securing said slider retaining loop to said canopy retaining loop. 13. The ram air parachute as set forth in claim 10, wherein said canopy retaining loops each include a slider stop to prevent fabric of the canopy from passing through the respectively associated retained grommet. 14. The ram air parachute as set forth in claim 13, wherein said canopy retaining loop is sewn to said canopy fabric and said slider stop is secured directly to said canopy retaining loop. 15. The ram air parachute as set forth in claim 13, wherein said slider stop is tied to said suspension line independently of said canopy fabric. 16. A method of securing a reefing slider to a ram air parachute canopy having upper and lower airfoil surfaces separated by chordwise-extending ribs to form cells inflated by inflow of air at an open leading edge, and suspension lines connecting the lower surface of the canopy to a load, said reefing slider having corner grommets and a plurality of intermediary grommets spaced between said corner grommets through which the suspension lines extend, said slider further having slider retaining loops adjacent at least some of said grommets, the method comprising the steps of: providing at least a leading edge of said canopy with canopy retaining loops spaced at intervals in general correspondence with said corner grommets and said plurality of intermediary grommets on said slider; aligning the canopy retaining loops with said slider retaining loops to form a plurality of loop pairs; and securing said plurality of loop pairs with respective fastening elements, said fastening elements securing said slider to said canopy to retard descent of the slider relative to the canopy from an upper reefing position in which inflation of the canopy is restricted, said slider being released from said canopy to descend along said suspension lines to a lowered position in response to release of said fastening elements due to force created by said inflow of air to said cells. 17. The method as set forth in claim 16, wherein said fastening elements are calibrated break cords and said step of securing includes passing the cords through each of said loop pairs, respectively and tying the cords. 18. The method as set forth in claim 17, wherein said step of securing includes passing a first cord repeatedly through a loop pair nearest a centerpoint of said canopy leading edge to create a plurality of cord turns through said centerpoint loop pair, and further including passing a second cord and a third cord through respective loop pairs adjacent each wing tip edge of said canopy, said second and third cords being tied after fewer cord turns than said first cord.
