A method for analyzing a storage operation cell, comprising: receiving characteristics data from a storage operation cell hierarchy, wherein the storage operation cell hierarchy comprises multiple hierarchically organized storage operation cells, each cell comprising a data agent component of a client computer configured to communicate with a first physical data storage resource, a media agent component configured to communicate with a second physical data storage resource, and a storage manager component configured to manage the data agent component and the media agent component, and wherein the data is descriptive of characteristics of at least one storage operation cell; receiving multiple weighting factors, wherein the weighting factors include at least one long-term weighting factor related to a long-term data protection service level and at least one short-term weighting factor related to a short-term data protection service level; calculating only a single storage metric based on the characteristics data and the weighting factors; and performing a data storage action related to at least one of the storage operation cells based on the calculated storage metric. 2. The method of claim 1, further comprising displaying the single storage metric on a display screen as a graphical chart or graph. 3. The method of claim 1, further comprising storing the plurality of weighting factors in a storage policy, the storage policy comprising a data structure that further comprises a set of preferences for performing a storage operation. 4. The method of claim 1, further comprising storing the plurality of weighting factors in a storage manager index associated with the storage operation cell. 5. The method of claim 1, wherein the storage metric calculation is further based on an age of one or more secondary copies of a primary copy volume in the storage operation cell hierarchy. 6. The method of claim 1, wherein the storage metric calculation is further based on a number of secondary copies in the storage operation cell hierarchy. 7. The method of claim 1, wherein the storage metric calculation is further based on a measure of availability of data stored in the storage operation cell hierarchy. 8. The method of claim 1, further comprising generating a plurality of network identifiers for a plurality network devices associated with the storage operation cell hierarchy, wherein each of the generated identifiers is distinguishable from each other. 9. The method of claim 1, further comprising providing a graphical user interface for adjusting the respective values of one or more long-term or short-term data storage parameters associated with the at least one long-term weighting factor or the at least one short-term weighting factor. 10. The method of claim 9, wherein the graphical user interface further comprises a slider bar. 11. The method of claim 9, wherein the graphical user interface comprises a component for selecting a weighting bias between the one or more long-term or short term data storage parameters. 12. The method of claim 11, further comprising calculating an overall composite metric based on the weighting bias and the one or more long-term or short-term data storage parameters. 13. The method of claim 1, further comprising storing a plurality of preconfigured storage profile types, wherein the storage profile types define respective values for at least one long-term data storage parameter and at least one short-term data storage parameter. 14. The method of claim 1, further comprising executing an auto-discovery routine configured to automatically evaluate a network and automatically determine a profile, wherein the profile defines respective values for at least one short-term data storage parameter and at least one long-term data storage parameter. 15. A computer readable medium storing program code which when executed on a computer, causes the computer to perform a method for analyzing a storage operation cell, the method comprising: receiving characteristics data from a storage operation cell hierarchy, wherein the storage operation cell hierarchy comprises multiple hierarchically organized storage operation cells, each cell comprising a data agent component of a client computer configured to communicate with a first physical data storage resource, a media agent component configured to communicate with a second physical data storage resource, and a storage manager component configured to manage the data agent component and the media agent component, and wherein the data is descriptive of characteristics of at least one storage operation cell; receiving multiple weighting factors, wherein the weighting factors include at least one long-term weighting factor related to a long-term data protection service level and at least one short-term weighting factor related to short-term data protection service level; calculating only a single storage metric based on the characteristics data and the weighting factors; and performing a data storage action related to at least one of the storage operation cells based on the calculated storage metric. 16. The medium of claim 15, wherein the storage metric calculation is further based on a number of secondary copies in the storage operation cell hierarchy and on a measure of availability of data stored in the storage operation cell hierarchy. 17. The medium of claim 15, wherein the method further comprises providing a graphical user interface having a slider bar for adjusting the respective values of one or more data storage parameters associated with the at least one long-term factor or the at least one short-term factor. 18. The medium method of claim 15, wherein the method further comprises storing a plurality of preconfigured storage profile types, wherein the storage profile types define respective values for at least one long-term data storage parameter and at least one short-term data storage parameter. 19. A system for analyzing a storage operation cell, comprising: a storage manager configured for: receiving characteristics data from a storage operation cell hierarchy, wherein the storage operation cell hierarchy comprises multiple hierarchically organized storage operation cells each comprising a data agent component of a client computer configured to communicate with a first physical data storage resource, a media agent component configured to communicate with a second physical data storage resource, and a storage manager component configured to manage the data agent component and the media agent component, and wherein the data is descriptive of characteristics of at least one storage operation cell; receiving multiple weighting factors, wherein the weighting factors include at least one long-term weighting factor related to a long-term data protection service level and at least one short-term weighting factor related to short-term data protection service level; calculating only a single storage metric based on the characteristics data and the weighting factors; and performing a data storage action related to at least one of the storage operation cells based on the calculated storage metric. 20. A system for analyzing a storage operation cell, comprising: a receiving means for: receiving characteristics data from a storage operation cell hierarchy, wherein the storage operation cell hierarchy comprises multiple hierarchically organized storage operation cells each comprising a data agent component of a client computer configured to communicate with a first physical data storage resource, a media agent component configured to communicate with a second physical data storage resource, and a storage manager component configured to manage the data agent component and the media agent component, and wherein the data is descriptive of characteristics of at least one storage operation cell; receiving multiple weighting factors, wherein the weighting factors include at least one long-term weighting factor related to a long-term data protection service level and at least one short-term weighting factor related to a short-term data protection service level; a calculating means for calculating only a single storage metric based on the characteristics data and the weighting factors; and an executing means for performing a data storage action related to at least one of the storage operation cells based on the calculated storage metric.
