The present invention relates to a device, method, system and kit for receiving effluent from an individual. In an alternative embodiment, the present invention is directed to a device, method, system and kit for collecting effluent from an individual during a medical or diagnostic procedure including but not limited to, imaging or viewing one or more sections of an individual's gastrointestinal tract. In another alternative embodiment, the effluent is collected in a hollow area in order to prevent the effluent form contaminating a component, device or apparatus used in connection with the medical or diagnostic procedure.

The invention claimed is: 1. A device adapted for use in distending an individual's colon prior to or during a diagnostic procedure comprising: (i) a first conduit having a proximal and distal end; (ii) a reservoir adapted for collecting effluent from an individual's anus while distending the individual's colon prior to or during a diagnostic procedure; the interior of the reservoir interfaced with the distal end of the first conduit, such that effluent passing through the individual's anus is collected in the reservoir; and (iii) an insertable member adapted for insertion into the individual's anus to allow for both the draining of effluent from an individual's anus and for the introduction of gas from an insufflator into an individual's anus; the insertable member having a front portion and rear portion, having a single channel extending from the front portion to the rear portion; the rear portion interfaced with the proximal end of the first conduit; (iv) a second conduit having a proximal and distal end; said proximal end interfaced with the interior of the reservoir, and the distal end of the second conduit is adapted to interface with an insufflator, such that gas discharged from the insufflator passes from the insufflator through the second conduit, through the interior of the reservoir, through the first conduit and then through the insertable member into the individual's anus; wherein effluent draining from the individual's anus passes through the insertable member and through the first conduit into the reservoir and the gas from the insufflator passes through the reservoir prior to or during the diagnostic procedure; (v) one or more barriers positioned on the first or second conduit; the barriers adapted to prevent effluent from contacting the insufflator prior to or during the diagnostic procedure. 2. The device according to claim 1, wherein the one or more barriers comprise an anti-viral or anti-bacterial barrier. 3. The device according to claim 2, wherein the one or more barriers is a hydrophobic filter. 4. The device according to claim 3, wherein the one or more barriers comprises a 0.1 micrometer hydrophobic membrane. 5. The device according to claim 1, wherein the one or more barriers comprises a fastening clamp, clip, snap lock, pinch clamp, or any combination thereof. 6. The device of claim 1, further comprising at least one connector means for fastening the first and second conduits to the reservoir. 7. The device of claim 1, wherein the reservoir has top, bottom, front and rear walls; the effluent reservoir further comprising a first and second port positioned on the top of said reservoir; and wherein the first and second conduits are engaged with the first and second ports, respectively. 8. The device of claim 1, further comprising a sensor adapted to detect unintended operation of the device or improper connection of the reservoir to the insertable member or an apparatus used to perform the diagnostic procedure. 9. The device of claim 8, further comprising a sensor adapted to detect a breech of fluid across one or more barriers. 10. The device of claim 1, wherein the reservoir is a flexible, collapsible bag. 11. The device of claim 1, wherein the reservoir is a substantially rigid container. 12. The device of claim 1, wherein the reservoir includes at least one connector means for interfacing the reservoir with the insertable member. 13. The device of claim 1, further comprising one or more hydrophobic filters disposed on the first or second conduits. 14. The device of claim 13, wherein the one or more hydrophobic filters are 0.1 micrometer hydrophobic membranes. 15. The device of claim 1, wherein the reservoir is a flexible collapsible vinyl bag comprising about 1 cc to about 100 cc volume. 16. The device of claim 1, wherein the reservoir is a rigid container comprising about 10 cc to about 120 cc volume. 17. The device of claim 1, wherein the reservoir is a container having a bottom surface and a top surface, wherein the container comprises two connector means integral with said top surface for connecting the reservoir to the first and second conduits. 18. The device of claim 1, wherein the insertable member includes a tip structure and a shaft having an inner and outer surface, wherein an inflatable balloon is positioned on the outer surface of the shaft for inflation from a substantially flat configuration into a distended configuration around the shaft when the tip structure of the insertable member is inserted into the body cavity. 19. The device of claim 18, wherein the balloon is inflated to prevent undesired movement of the insertable member. 20. The device of claim 1, wherein the device is in the form of a kit that is configured to be useable in conjunction with a CO2 insufflator apparatus. 21. The device of claim 20, wherein the first and second conduits comprise flexible tubing. 22. The device of claim 20, wherein the device further comprises one or more hydrophobic filters that are disposable on the first or second conduits so that effluent is prevented from migrating to an undesired location.
