The router as set forth in claim 1, wherein the adjustment mechanism further includes a biasing member for biasing the lock mechanism toward the engaged position. 3. A router comprising: a base for supporting the router on a work piece surface; a motor housing supported by the base for movement along an axis to a position relative to the base; a motor supported by the housing and operable to drive a tool element; an adjustment mechanism for adjusting the position of the housing relative to the base, the adjustment mechanism including a shaft connected to the motor housing for rotation about an axis and having a thread portion, and a thread-engaging member connected to the base and being selectively engageable with the thread portion, wherein, upon the thread-engaging member engaging the thread portion, the shaft is rotated to cause small changes to the position of the housing relative to the base, the thread-engaging member being movable between an engaged position, in which the thread-engaging member engages the thread portion, and a disengaged position, in which the thread engaging member disengages the thread portion and the housing is freely movable relative to the base to provide course adjustment of the position of the housing relative to the base, and the thread-engaging member including a lug engageable with the thread portion; and a fixing assembly for fixing the housing in a position relative to the base, the fixing assembly including a clamping member for applying a clamping force to the housing to fix the housing in a position relative to the base, and an actuator for moving the clamping member between a clamping position, in which the clamping member applies the clamping force to the housing, and a release position, in which the clamping force is not applied to the housing and the housing is movable relative to the base, the actuator including a plurality of cam members which are engageable to move the clamping member to the clamping position. 4. The router as set forth in claim 1, wherein the lug extends at least about 90 degrees about the shaft. 5. The router as set forth in claim 1, wherein the lug extends at least about 180 degrees about the shaft. 6. The router as set forth in claim 1, and further comprising an adjustment knob coupled to an upper end of the shaft and rotatable with the shaft relative to the housing to allow an operator to manually rotate the shaft. 7. The router as set forth in claim 1, and further comprising a position indication ring couplable to the shaft, surrounding the shaft, and including a plurality of position indicating markings for indicating depth adjustment positions. 8. The router as set forth in claim 1, and further comprising a depth adjustment column defined by the base, wherein at least a portion of the shaft is positionable in the depth adjustment column. 9. The router as set forth in claim 8, wherein at least a portion of the thread-engaging member is positioned in the depth adjustment column. 10. The router as set forth in claim 1, wherein the motor housing is removable from the base. 11. The router as set forth in claim 1, and further comprising a clamping member operable to apply a clamping force to the housing to fix the housing in a position relative to the base, and an actuator for moving the clamping member between a clamping position, in which the clamping member applies the clamping force to the housing, and a release position, in which the clamping force is at least reduced such that the housing is movable relative to the base. 12. The router as set forth in claim 1, wherein the lock mechanism further includes a lock button engageable by an operator to move the lock mechanism between the engaged position and the disengaged position. 13. A router comprising: a base for supporting the router on a surface; a motor housing supported by the base for movement along an axis to a position relative to the base; a motor supported by the housing and operable to drive a tool element to work on a work piece; an adjustment mechanism for adjusting the position of the housing relative to the base, the adjustment mechanism including a shaft connected to the motor housing for rotation about an axis and having a thread portion, and a thread-engaging member connected to the base and selectively engageable with the thread portion, wherein, upon the thread-engaging member engaging the thread portion, the shaft is rotated to cause small changes to the position of the housing relative to the base, the thread-engaging member being movable between an engaged position, in which the thread-engaging member engages the thread portion, and a disengaged position, in which the thread engaging member disengages the thread portion and the housing is freely movable relative to the base to provide course adjustment of the position of the housing relative to the base, the thread-engaging member including a lug engageable with the thread portion; a clamping member operable to apply a clamping force to the housing to fix the housing in a position relative to the base; and an actuator for moving the clamping member between a clamping position, in which the clamping member applies the clamping force to the housing, and a release position, in which the clamping force is at least reduced such that the housing is movable relative to the base; wherein the actuator includes a plurality of cam members which are engageable to move the clamping member to the clamping position. 14. The router of as set forth in claim 11, wherein the actuator is pivotable about an axis transverse to the axis of rotation of the shaft. 15. The router as set forth in claim 1, wherein the thread-engaging member is a lug engageable with the thread portion. 16. A router comprising: a base for supporting the router on a work piece surface; a motor housing supported by the base for movement along an axis to a position relative to the base; a motor supported by the housing and operable to drive a tool element; an adjustment mechanism for adjusting the position of the housing relative to the base, the adjustment mechanism including a unitarily formed lock mechanism connected to the base and including an aperture having an inner surface and a lug formed on the inner surface of the aperture, a shaft connected to the motor housing for rotation about an axis and having a thread portion that passes through the aperture of the lock mechanism, the lug being selectively engageable with the thread portion, wherein, upon the lug engaging the thread portion, the shaft is rotatable to cause small changes to the position of the housing relative to the base, and wherein the lock mechanism is movable between an engaged position, in which the lug engages the thread portion, and a disengaged position, in which the lug disengages the thread portion and the housing is freely movable relative to the base to provide course adjustment of the position of the housing relative to the base, and a biasing member for biasing the lock mechanism toward the engaged position; a clamping member operable to apply a clamping force to the housing to fix the housing in a position relative to the base; and an actuator for moving the clamping member between a clamping position, in which the clamping member applies the clamping force to the housing, and a release position, in which the clamping force is at least reduced such that the housing is movable relative to the base.
