A swash plate apparatus for engagement with axial pistons of a rotatable cylinder block in a hydraulic device having a housing, a first bearing, a second bearing, and a pump input shaft, the swash plate apparatus comprising: a swash plate body having a bore for receiving the pump input shaft, the bore sized for allowing movement of the swash plate body relative to the pump input shaft; a first member having a generally circular cross section and extending in a first direction from the swash plate body, at least a portion of the first member extending along a first member axis which is co-linear with the axis of rotation of the swash plate, wherein the first member is supported about its periphery proximate the circular cross section by the first bearing; and a single second member extending from the swash plate body in a second direction that is generally perpendicular to the first direction and axis of rotation, wherein the single second member terminates in an arc segment forming a bearing surface for engagement with the second bearing and wherein the swash plate body has a first side toward the first member, on one side of the pump input shaft, and a second side on the opposite side of the pump input shaft, wherein the single second member extends from only the second side of the swash plate body. 2. The swash plate apparatus of claim 1, wherein the first member is a trunnion and wherein the first bearing is positioned in the housing. 3. The swash plate apparatus of claim 1, wherein the second bearing comprises a curved portion located adjacent the bearing surface of the second member and a single length formed to be at an angle to the curved portion, wherein the single length mates with a slot formed in the housing to fix the position of the second bearing. 4. The swash plate apparatus of claim 1, further comprising a thrust bearing support surface. 5. A swash plate for a hydraulic drive device having a housing and a pump input shaft, the swash plate comprising: a first member having an axis and a first radial dimension extending from the axis to a first member periphery, for engagement with a first bearing; a thrust bearing support surface located at a distance from the axis that is greater than the first radial dimension, the thrust bearing support surface having a bore for receiving the pump input shaft, the bore sized for allowing movement of the swash plate relative to the pump input shaft; a single second member having a curved bearing surface for engagement with a curved bearing, wherein the radial dimension from the axis to the curved bearing surface is greater than the distance from the axis to the periphery of the first member, wherein the first member is positioned on one side of the bore and wherein the single second member is positioned only on the opposite side of the bore, relative to the axis. 6. The swash plate of claim 5, wherein the first member is a trunnion. 7. The swash plate of claim 5, wherein the second member abuts a cradle bearing fixedly positioned in the housing. 8. The swash plate of claim 7, wherein the cradle bearing comprises a curved portion and a single portion bent at an angle to the curved portion. 9. The swash plate of claim 8, wherein the angled portion of the cradle bearing interfaces with a groove formed in the housing to retain the cradle bearing in position. 10. The swash plate of claim 5, wherein the swash plate is constrained perpendicularly to the axis on either side of the swash plate by the housing. 11. A hydraulic drive apparatus, comprising: a housing forming a sump; a center section mounted in the sump and having hydraulic porting formed therein; a hydraulic pump cylinder block having a rotational axis, disposed on a pump running surface on the center section and in fluid communication with the hydraulic porting; a plurality of axial pistons mounted in the pump cylinder block; a swash plate having a rotational axis mounted in the housing and engaging the axial pistons, the swash plate comprising a swash plate body, a trunnion extending from a first end of the swash plate body and through the housing, and a single cradle member extending from only a second end of the swash plate body opposite to the first end of the swash plate body, and wherein the cradle member is engaged to a cradle bearing in the housing. 12. The hydraulic drive apparatus of claim 11, wherein the cradle bearing is separately mounted between the housing and the cradle member. 13. The hydraulic drive apparatus of claim 12, further comprising a motor cylinder block mounted on a motor running surface of the center section and in fluid communication with the pump cylinder block through the hydraulic porting. 14. The hydraulic drive apparatus of claim 13, further comprising a plurality of gears driven by the motor cylinder block and an output axle shaft driven by the plurality of gears. 15. The hydraulic drive apparatus of claim 11, wherein the swash plate further comprises a thrust bearing support surface and the trunnion is positioned on one side of the thrust bearing support surface and the cradle member is formed on the opposite side of the thrust bearing support surface. 16. The hydraulic drive apparatus of claim 11, wherein the cradle member extends in a direction generally perpendicular to the trunnion. 17. The hydraulic drive apparatus of claim 11, wherein the housing forms a pocket to support the cradle member on opposite sides thereof. 18. The hydraulic drive apparatus of claim 11, wherein the cradle member further comprises a first side and a second side opposite thereto, where the first and second sides extend perpendicular to the trunnion. 19. A hydraulic drive apparatus, comprising: a housing forming a sump; a center section mounted in the sump and having hydraulic porting formed therein; a hydraulic pump cylinder block disposed on a pump running surface on the center section and in fluid communication with the hydraulic porting; a plurality of axial pistons mounted in the pump cylinder block; a swash plate mounted in the housing and engaging the axial pistons, the swash plate comprising a swash plate body, a trunnion extending from a first end of the swash plate body and through the housing, and a cradle member formed on a second end of the swash plate body opposite to the first end of the swash plate body, wherein the cradle member further comprises a first side and a second side opposite thereto, wherein the first and second sides extend perpendicular to the trunnion, and wherein the housing comprises a first housing member positioned to the first side of the cradle member and a second housing member secured to the first housing member to form the sump and positioned proximate to the second side of the cradle member such that the first housing member and the second housing member form a pocket for the cradle member.
