The present invention provides a method for removing an oil contaminant from a surface of an aqueous solution, comprising manually controlling a surface skimmer from a remote location to remove a layer or a batch of an oil contaminant from an oil-aqueous solution mixture by the skimmer, where the aqueous solution is contaminated by the oil as a result of an industrial process. The present invention also provides a system for carrying out the method, which comprises a surface skimmer, a collection means which is preferably a separator, a conduit connecting the skimmer to the collection means in an airtight fashion, and means for creating negative pressure in the skimmer, where the skimmer is capable of manual control from a remote location; in further embodiments, the system further comprises an air filtering means.

We claim: 1. A system for removing a layer of an oil contaminant from the surface of an aqueous solution, comprising: a surface skimmer; a collection container; a conduit connecting the skimmer to the collection container in an airtight fashion; a negative pressure source, and and an air filter, wherein the system comprises a manual control component, wherein said manual control component is in active communication with said surface skimmer, and wherein said manual control component is configured for manual control from a remote location, and where the solution is contaminated as a result of an industrial process. 2. The system of claim 1, wherein the air filter is disposed between the collection container and the negative pressure source for the skimmer. 3. The system of claim 1, wherein the collection container comprises a vertical separator. 4. A device for removing a layer of an oil contaminant from the surface of an aqueous solution, comprising: a surface skimmer; a collection container; a conduit connecting the skimmer to the collection container in an airtight fashion; and a negative pressure source, wherein the device comprises a manual control component, wherein said manual control component is in active communication with said surface skimmer, and wherein said manual control component is configured for manual control from a remote location and comprises a hollow tube comprising a skimmer inlet and a skimmer outlet, wherein the skimmer inlet comprises a first end of the tube which is partially closed, where the inlet extends along the tube from the partially closed first end, and wherein the skimmer outlet comprises an open second end which can be connected to the conduit. 5. The device of claim 4, wherein the skimmer is an angled skimmer. 6. A device for removing a layer of an oil contaminant from the surface of solution, comprising: a surface skimmer; a collection container; a conduit connecting the skimmer to the collection container in an airtight fashion; and a negative pressure source, wherein the device comprises a manual control component, wherein said manual control component is in active communication with said surface skimmer, and wherein said manual control component is configured for manual control from a remote location and comprises a hollow tube comprising a skimmer inlet and a skimmer outlet, wherein the skimmer inlet comprises a first opening cut horizontally along one side of the tube and a second opening cut horizontally along an opposite side of the tube, where the first and second opening are close to a first end of the tube which is closed, and where the first and second opening together comprise less than the entire circumference of the tube, and wherein the skimmer outlet comprises an open second end which can be connected to the conduit. 7. A device for removing a layer of an oil contaminant from the surface of an aqueous solution, comprising: a surface skimmer; a collection container; a conduit connecting the skimmer to the collection container in an airtight fashion; a negative pressure source; and an air filter, wherein said device comprises a manual control component, wherein said manual control component is in active communication with said surface skimmer, and wherein said manual control component wherein the skimmer is configured for manual control from a remote location. 8. The device of claim 7, wherein the air filter is disposed between the collection container and the negative pressure source in the skimmer. 9. The device of claim 7, wherein the air filter is selected from the group consisting of a baffler filter or an electrostatic filter. 10. The device of claim 7, wherein up to about 50% of particles are trapped by the filtering means. 11. The device of claim 7, wherein particles greater than about 100 microns are trapped by the air filter. 12. The device of claim 7, wherein the collection container comprises a vertical separator. 13. The device of claim 7, wherein the skimmer comprises a hollow tube comprising a skimmer inlet and a skimmer outlet, wherein the skimmer inlet comprises an opening cut horizontally along the tube, and close to a first end which is closed, and wherein the skimmer outlet comprises an open second end which can be connected to the conduit. 14. The device of claim 7, wherein the skimmer comprises a hollow tube comprising a skimmer inlet and a skimmer outlet, wherein the skimmer inlet comprises a first opening cut horizontally along one side of the tube and a second opening cut horizontally along an opposite side of the tube, where the first and second opening are close to a first end of the tube which is closed, and where the first and second opening together comprise less than the entire circumference of the tube, and wherein the skimmer outlet comprises an open second end of the tube which can be connected to the conduit. 15. The device of claim 7, wherein the skimmer comprises a hollow tube comprising a skimmer inlet and a skimmer outlet, wherein the skimmer inlet comprises a first end of the tube which is partially closed, where the inlet extends along the tube from the partially closed first end, and where the skimmer outlet comprises an open second end of the tube which can be connected to the conduit. 16. The device of claim 7, wherein the skimmer comprises an angled skimmer. 17.
