A method of treating the surfaces of medical instruments which are contaminated with prions includes contacting the surface with a composition containing a source of peroxide ions, such as hydrogen peroxide, at a molar concentration of at least 1.5M peroxide (equivalent to approximately 5% hydrogen peroxide) and preferably, about 2M peroxide (approximately 7% hydrogen peroxide). The composition is optionally in the form of a gel. The composition is retained in contact with the surfaces for about 1-2 hours until all or substantially all prion contamination is removed.

The invention claimed is: 1. A gel composition for treatment of a device contaminated with prions, comprising: peroxide at a molar concentration of at least 1.5 M; at least 5% of a humectant; and a thickener in a sufficient amount to provide a viscosity of 700-4000 cps; at least 0.1% by weight of a
The invention claimed is: 1. A gel composition for treatment of a device contaminated with prions, comprising: peroxide at a molar concentration of at least 1.5 M; at least 5% of a humectant; and a thickener in a sufficient amount to provide a viscosity of 700-4000 cps; at least 0.1% by weight of a corrosion inhibitor selected from the group consisting of azoles, diazoles, and triazoles; and a hydrogen peroxide stabilizer. 2. The composition of claim 1, wherein the pH of the composition is from 5-6. 3. The composition of claim 1, wherein the hydrogen peroxide is at a concentration of 6-8% by weight. 4. The composition of claim 1, wherein the hydrogen peroxide concentration is about 7% by weight of the composition. 5. The composition of claim 1, wherein the thickener is selected from the group consisting of cellulose derivatives, acrylic acid-based polymers, gums, guars, guar derivatives, alginates, alginate derivatives, non-ionic surfactants, non-ionic polymers, and combination thereof. 6. The composition of claim 5, wherein the thickener includes a hydroxyethylcellulose or hydrophobically modified derivative thereof. 7. The composition of claim 1, wherein the humectant is selected from the group consisting of sorbitol, glycerine, glucitol, polyethylene glycol, propylene glycol, dipropylene glycol, 1,3-butylene glycol, hexylene glycol, and mixtures thereof. 8. The composition of claim 1, wherein the humectant comprises: sorbitol a concentration of 5-30%. 9. A method of treating a device contaminated with prions, comprising: treating the device with a gel composition comprising: peroxide at a molar concentration of at least 1.5 M; at least 5% of a humectant; and a thickener in a sufficient amount to provide a viscosity of 700-4000 cps; at least 0.1% by weight of a corrosion inhibitor selected from the group consisting of azoles, diazoles, and triazoles; and a hydrogen peroxide stabilizer. 10. The method of claim 9, wherein the pH of the composition is from 5-6. 11. The method of claim 9, wherein the hydrogen peroxide is at a concentration of 6-8% by weight. 12. The method of claim 9, wherein the hydrogen peroxide concentration is about 7% by weight of the composition. 13. The method of claim 9, wherein the thickener is selected from the group consisting of cellulose derivatives, acrylic acid-based polymers, gums, guars, guar derivatives, alginates, alginate derivatives, non-ionic surfactants, non-ionic polymers, and combination thereof. 14. The method of claim 9, wherein the thickener includes a hydroxyethylcellulose or hydrophobically modified derivative thereof. 15. The method of claim 9, wherein the humectant is selected from the group consisting of sorbitol, glycerine, glucitol, polyethylene glycol, propylene glycol, dipropylene glycol, 1,3-butylene glycol, hexylene glycol, and mixtures thereof.
