A navigation system includes a communication port in a vehicle, a hand held portable unit, and a wireless communication between the portable unit and the communication port when the portable unit is in the vehicle. The portable unit has a position locator and is capable of establishing a geographical position of the portable unit. The portable unit is removable from the vehicle by an occupant of the vehicle. An information display may be disposed on, at or within an interior rearview mirror assembly of the vehicle, and may display navigational information for viewing by a driver of the vehicle. The navigational information may be derived from the wireless communication between the portable unit and the communication port.

The embodiments of the invention in which an exclusive property or privilege is claimed are defined as follows: 1. A navigation system for a vehicle, said navigation system comprising: a communication port in a vehicle; a hand held portable unit, said hand held portable unit having a position locator and being capable of establishing a geographical position of said hand held portable unit; a wireless communication between said hand held portable unit and said communication port when said hand held portable unit is in the vehicle; wherein said hand held portable unit is removable from the vehicle by an occupant of the vehicle and is not part of an integrated computer within the vehicle, said hand held portable unit being separated from the vehicle and distant from the vehicle when said hand held portable unit is removed from the vehicle; and an information display on, at or within an interior rearview mirror assembly of the vehicle, said information display displaying navigational information for viewing by a driver of the vehicle, said navigational information being derived from said wireless communication between said hand held portable unit and said communication port. 2. The navigation system of claim 1, wherein said information display comprises a video display screen on, at or within said interior rearview mirror assembly. 3. The navigation system of claim 1 further comprising a docking station for physically docking said portable unit in the vehicle. 4. The navigation system of claim 1, wherein said navigation information for said information display is communicated to said interior rearview mirror assembly via a data communication link. 5. The navigation system of claim 4, wherein said data communication link comprises a vehicle bus system or network. 6. The navigation system of claim 4, wherein said data communication link comprises a wireless communication link. 7. The navigation system of claim 1, wherein said displayed navigational information is dynamically adapted in accordance with at least one of a vehicle parameter and a personal parameter of the driver of the vehicle. 8. The navigation system of claim 1, wherein said displayed navigational information is dynamically adapted in accordance with a vehicle parameter, said vehicle parameter comprising one of a vehicle speed, a vehicle geographic location, a vehicle model, a vehicle heading or direction of travel, and a vehicle authorization. 9. The navigation system of claim 1, wherein said displayed navigational information is dynamically adapted in accordance with a personal parameter, said biometric parameter comprising at least one of a driver/occupant identity, a driver/occupant preference for a particular level of information resolution, and a manually input parameter. 10. The navigation system of claim 1, wherein said displayed navigational information pertains to an area around the vehicle, said area being adaptable as a function of at least one of a vehicle parameter and a personal parameter. 11. The navigation system of claim 1, wherein said navigational information is displayed at a resolution that is a function of at least one of a vehicle parameter and a personal parameter. 12. The navigation system of claim 1, wherein said interior rearview mirror assembly includes at least one accessory selected from the group consisting of an illumination source, an imaging sensor and a microphone. 13. The navigation system of claim 1, wherein said interior rearview mirror assembly includes a microphone, said microphone comprising a portion of a system consisting of at least one of a voice acquisition system, a voice recognition system and a voice generation system. 14. The navigation system of claim 1, wherein said position locator of said portable unit comprises one of a global positioning system receiver, a signal triangulator, a compass-based system, and an inertial navigation system. 15. The navigation system of claim 1 further comprising a vehicle-based position locator capable of establishing a geographical position of the vehicle. 16. The navigation system of claim 15, wherein a position of the vehicle is determined when said portable unit is in communication with said communication port using said position locator and said vehicle-based position locator in combination. 17. The navigation system of claim 15, wherein a position of the vehicle is determined using one of said position locator of said portable unit and said vehicle-based position locator. 18. The navigation system of claim 15, wherein a determination is made which of said position locator of said portable unit and said vehicle-based position locator is more accurately determining the position of the vehicle. 19. The navigation system of claim 1, wherein said wireless communication comprises an infrared communication. 20. The navigation system of claim 1, wherein said wireless communication comprises a radio frequency communication. 21. The navigation system of claim 20, wherein said wireless communication comprises a short range communication protocol. 22. The navigation system of claim 21, wherein said short range communication protocol comprises a BLUETOOTH�� protocol. 23. The navigation system of claim 1, wherein said interior rearview mirror assembly comprises a variable reflectivity electro-optic mirror assembly. 24. The navigation system of claim 1, wherein said navigational information comprises at least one of (a) driving instructions and (b) map information. 25. A navigation system for a vehicle, said navigation system comprising: a communication port in a vehicle; a hand held portable unit, said hand held portable unit having a position locator and being capable of establishing a geographical position of said hand held portable unit, said position locator comprising a GPS receiver; a wireless communication between said hand held portable unit and said communication port when said hand held portable unit is in the vehicle, said wireless communication comprising a radio frequency communication; wherein said hand held portable unit is removable from the vehicle by an occupant of the vehicle and is not part of an integrated computer within the vehicle, said hand held portable unit being separated from the vehicle and distant from the vehicle when said hand held portable unit is removed from the vehicle; and an information display on, at or within an interior rearview mirror assembly of the vehicle, said information display displaying navigational information for viewing by a driver of the vehicle, said navigational information being derived from said wireless communication between said hand held portable unit and said communication port. 26. The navigation system of claim 25, wherein said information display comprises a video display screen on, at or within said interior rearview mirror assembly. 27. The navigation system of claim 25 further comprising a docking station for physically docking said portable unit in the vehicle. 28. The navigation system of claim 25, wherein said navigation information is communicated to said information display via a data communication link. 29. The navigation system of claim 28, wherein said data communication link comprises a vehicle bus system or network. 30. The navigation system of claim 28, wherein said data communication link comprises a wireless communication link. 31. The navigation system of claim 25, wherein said displayed navigational information is dynamically adapted in accordance with at least one of a vehicle parameter and a personal parameter of the driver of the vehicle. 32. The navigation system of claim 25 further comprising a vehicle-based position locator capable of establishing a geographical position of the vehicle. 33. The navigation system of claim 25, wherein said interior rearview mirror assembly comprises a variable reflectivity electro-optic mirror assembly. 34. The navigation system of claim 25, wherein said navigational information comprises at least one of (a) driving instructions and (b) map information. 35. A navigation system for a vehicle, said navigation system comprising: a communication port in a vehicle; a hand held portable unit, said hand held portable unit having a position locator and being capable of establishing a geographical position of said hand held portable unit; a wireless communication between said hand held portable unit and said communication port when said hand held portable unit is in the vehicle; wherein said hand held portable unit is removable from the vehicle by an occupant of the vehicle and is not part of an integrated computer within the vehicle, said hand held portable unit being separated from the vehicle and distant from the vehicle when said hand held portable unit is removed from the vehicle; an interior rearview mirror assembly, said mirror assembly comprising a variable reflectivity electro-optic mirror assembly, said mirror assembly including at least one accessory selected from the group consisting of an illumination source, an imaging sensor and a microphone; and an information display on, at or within said interior rearview mirror assembly, said information display displaying navigational information for viewing by a driver of the vehicle, said navigational information being derived from said wireless communication between said hand held portable unit and said communication port. 36. The navigation system of claim 35, wherein said information display comprises a video display screen on, at or within said interior rearview mirror assembly. 37. The navigation system of claim 35 further comprising a docking station for physically docking said portable unit in the vehicle. 38. The navigation system of claim 35, wherein said navigation information is communicated to said information display via a data communication link. 39. The navigation system of claim 38, wherein said data communication link comprises a vehicle bus system or network. 40. The navigation system of claim 35, wherein said navigational information comprises at least one of (a) driving instructions and (b) map information. 41. The navigation system of claim 35, wherein said displayed navigational information is dynamically adapted in accordance with at least one of a vehicle parameter and a personal parameter of the driver of the vehicle. 42.
