A hydrocracking process wherein the feedstock is hydrotreated and the liquid and gaseous effluent from the hydrotreater is directly introduced into the upper end of a hydrocracking vessel which provides a liquid seal to prevent the passage of the gaseous stream containing hydrogen sulfide and ammonia from the hydrotreater to enter the hydrocracking zone containing hydrocracking catalyst. Fresh hydrogen is then introduced into the hydrocracking zone. An apparatus for hydrocracking a hydrocarbon feedstock is also disclosed.

What is claimed is: 1. What is claimed is: 1. A hydrocracking process which comprises the following steps: a) reacting a hydrocarbon feedstock and hydrogen in a hydrotreating zone containing hydrotreating catalyst to produce a hydrotreating zone effluent; b) introducing the hydrotreating zone effluent into an upper end of a hydrocracking vessel maintained at essentially the same pressure as the hydrotreating zone to produce a generally upwardly flowing gaseous stream, and a generally downwardly flowing liquid; c) removing the gaseous stream produced in step b) from the hydrocracking vessel; d) reacting the downwardly flowing liquid stream comprising hydrotreated hydrocarbons and a hydrogen rich gaseous stream in a hydrocracking zone containing hydrocracking catalyst; and e) recovering hydrocracked hydrocarbons. 2. The process of claim 1 wherein the hydrocarbon feedstock boils in the range from about 315�� C. (600�� F.) to about 565�� C. (1050�� F.). 3. The process of claim 1 wherein the hydrotreating zone is operated at conditions including a pressure from about 3.5 MPa (500 psig) to about 17.3 MPa (2500 psig) and a temperature from about 260�� C. (500�� F.) to about 454�� C. (850�� F.). 4. The process of claim 1 wherein the hydrocracking zone is operated at conditions including a pressure from about 3.5 MPa (500 psig) to about 17.3 MPa (2500 psig) and a temperature from about 260�� C. (500�� F.) to about 454�� C. (850�� F.). 5. The process of claim 1 wherein the hydrotreating zone effluent is introduced into the hydrocracking vessel tangentially with respect to the hydrocracking vessel wall. 6. The process of claim 1 wherein the upper end of the hydrocracking vessel provides a baffle to enhance the separation of the gaseous stream in step (b) from the liquid. 7. The process of claim 1 wherein the upper end of the hydrocracking vessel provides a liquid seal to prevent the passage of the gaseous stream in step (b) to the hydrocracking zone in step (d). 8. A hydrocracking process which comprises the following steps: a) reacting a hydrocarbon feedstock and hydrogen in a hydrotreating zone containing hydrotreating catalyst to produce a hydrotreating zone effluent; b) introducing the hydrotreating zone effluent into an upper end of a hydrocracking vessel maintained at essentially the same pressure as the hydrotreating zone to produce a generally upwardly flowing gaseous stream, and a generally downwardly flowing liquid; c) removing the gaseous stream produced in step b) from the hydrocracking vessel; d) reacting the downwardly flowing liquid stream comprising hydrotreated hydrocarbons and a hydrogen rich gaseous stream in a hydrocracking zone containing hydrocracking catalyst; and e) recovering hydrocracked hydrocarbons. 9. The process of claim 8 wherein the hydrocarbon feedstock boils in the range from about 315�� C. (600�� F.) to about 565�� C. (1050�� F.). 10. The process of claim 8 wherein the hydrotreating zone is operated at conditions including a pressure from about 3.5 MPa (500 psig) to about 17.3 MPa (2500 psig) and a temperature from about 260�� C. The process of claim 8 wherein the hydrocracking zone is operated at conditions including a pressure from about 3.5 MPa (500 psig) to about 17.3 MPa (2500 psig) and a temperature from about 260�� C. The process of claim 8 wherein the hydrotreating zone effluent comprising hydrogen sulfide, ammonia and hydrotreated hydrocarbons is introduced into the hydrocracking vessel tangentially with respect to the hydrocracking vessel wall. 13. The process of claim 8 wherein the upper end of the hydrocracking vessel provides a baffle to enhance the separation of the gaseous stream in step (b) from the liquid. 14. The process of claim 8 wherein the upper end of the hydrocracking vessel provides a liquid seal to prevent the passage of the gaseous stream in step (b) to the hydrocracking zone in step (d). 15. A hydrocracking process which comprises the following steps: a) reacting a hydrocarbon feedstock boiling in the range from about 315�� C. (600�� F.) to about 565�� C. (1050�� F.) and containing sulfur and nitrogen compounds, and hydrogen in a hydrotreating zone operated at conditions including a pressure from about 3.5 MPa (500 psig) to about 17.3 MPa (2500 psig) and a temperature from about 260�� C. (500�� F.) to about 454�� C. (850�� F.) and containing hydrotreating catalyst to produce a hydrotreating zone effluent comprising hydrogen sulfide, ammonia and hydrotreated hydrocarbons, b) introducing the hydrotreating zone effluent comprising hydrogen sulfide, ammonia and hydrotreated hydrocarbons into an upper end of a hydrocracking vessel maintained at essentially the same pressure as the hydrotreating zone to produce a generally upwardly flowing gaseous stream comprising hydrogen sulfide, ammonia and hydrogen, and a generally downwardly flowing liquid stream comprising hydrotreated hydrocarbons; c) removing the gaseous stream produced in step b) from the hydrocracking vessel; d) reacting the downwardly flowing liquid stream comprising hydrotreated hydrocarbons and a hydrogen rich gaseous stream in a hydrocracking zone containing hydrocracking catalyst and operated at conditions including a pressure from about 3.5 MPa (500 psig) to about 17.3 MPa (2500 psig) and a temperature from about 260�� C. (500�� F.) to about 454�� C. (850�� F.); and e) recovering hydrocracked hydrocarbons. 16. The process of claim 15 wherein the hydrotreating effluent comprising hydrogen sulfide, ammonia and hydrotreated hydrocarbons is introduced into the hydrocracking vessel tangentially with respect to the hydrocracking vessel wall. 17. The process of claim 15 wherein the upper end of the hydrocracking vessel provides a baffle to enhance the separation of the gaseous stream in step (b) from the liquid stream. 18. The process of claim 15 wherein the upper end of the hydrocracking vessel provides a liquid seal to prevent the passage of the gaseous stream in step (b) to the hydrocracking zone in step (d).
