An anvil of a surgical stapler including releasable pocket elements that can capture ends of fired staples. In various embodiments, the pocket elements can be released from the anvil such that the pocket elements remain with the staples and stapled tissue after the stapler has been fired. When deployed, the ends of the staples may be turned, or bent, by the pocket elements and then contact a staple-end retaining surface of the pocket element that prevents the ends of the staples from re-puncturing or re-penetrating the tissue. In various embodiments, forces created during the stapling and/or cutting actions of the stapler can overcome a pressure-fit force retaining the pocket elements in the anvil such that the pocket elements are released upon firing. In various embodiments, the staples can have a dissolvable or bioabsorbable crown which can release pressure on the stapled tissue as it is dissolved or absorbed.
What is claimed is: 1. A surgical cutting and stapling instrument comprising an end effector, wherein the end effector comprises: a first jaw member comprising an anvil; a second jaw member opposing the first jaw member, wherein the second jaw member comprises a staple cartridge, wherein the staple
What is claimed is: 1. A surgical cutting and stapling instrument comprising an end effector, wherein the end effector comprises: a first jaw member comprising an anvil; a second jaw member opposing the first jaw member, wherein the second jaw member comprises a staple cartridge, wherein the staple cartridge comprises a plurality of staples; and a cutting instrument connected to the second jaw member for cutting tissue clamped between the first and second jaw members; and wherein the anvil comprises a staple forming surface facing the staple cartridge that comprises a plurality of releasable pocket elements for forming the staples when the staples are fired that are separately releasable from the anvil. 2. The surgical cutting and stapling instrument of claim 1, wherein each releasable pocket element comprises one or more staple-end retaining surfaces. 3. The surgical cutting and stapling instrument of claim 2, wherein the staples comprise an integrated crown and staple driver. 4. The surgical cutting and stapling instrument of claim 3, wherein both (a) the releasable pocket elements and (b) the integrated crowns and staple drivers of the staples are made from the same material. 5. The surgical cutting and stapling instrument of claim 4, wherein both (a) the releasable pocket elements and (b) the integrated crowns and staple drivers of the staples are made from thermoplastic. 6. The surgical cutting and stapling instrument of claim 5, wherein both (a) the releasable pocket elements and (b) the integrated crowns and staple drivers of the staples are made from a bioabsorbable material. 7. The surgical cutting and stapling instrument of claim 5, wherein both (a) the releasable pocket elements and (b) the integrated crowns and staple drivers of the staples are made from a non-bioabsorbable material. 8. The surgical cutting and stapling instrument of claim 2, wherein the releasable pocket elements are configured such that, when the instrument is fired, the staple-end retaining surfaces retain ends of the fired staples such that the releasable pocket elements capture the staple ends, and the releasable pocket elements are released from the anvil and retained with the staples after the instrument is fired. 9. The surgical cutting and stapling instrument of claim 2, wherein each releasable pocket element comprises two pockets and two staple-end retaining surfaces. 10. The surgical cutting and stapling instrument of claim 1, further comprising: a shaft assembly connected to the end effector; and a handle connected to the shaft assembly. 11. The surgical cutting and stapling instrument of claim 10, wherein the handle comprises: a firing trigger; and a closure trigger that is separate from the firing trigger. 12. A surgical stapling instrument comprising: an end effector, wherein the end effector comprises: an anvil; and a jaw member opposing the anvil, wherein the jaw member is configured to receive a staple cartridge having a plurality of staples therein; and wherein the anvil comprises a staple forming surface facing the jaw member that comprises a plurality of releasable elements for forming the staples when the staples are fired, and wherein the releasable elements are separately releasable from the anvil. 13. The surgical stapling instrument of claim 12, wherein each releasable element comprises one or more staple-end retaining surfaces. 14. The surgical stapling instrument of claim 13, wherein the staples comprise an integrated crown and staple driver. 15. The surgical stapling instrument of claim 14, wherein both (a) the releasable elements and (b) the integrated crowns and staple drivers of the staples are made from the same material. 16. The surgical stapling instrument of claim 15, wherein both (a) the releasable elements and (b) the integrated crowns and staple drivers of the staples are made from thermoplastic. 17. The surgical stapling instrument of claim 16, wherein both (a) the releasable elements and (b) the integrated crowns and staple drivers of the staples are made from a bioabsorbable material. 18. The surgical stapling instrument of claim 16, wherein both (a) the releasable elements and (b) the integrated crowns and staple drivers of the staples are made from a non-bioabsorbable material. 19. The surgical stapling instrument of claim 13, wherein the releasable elements are configured such that, when the instrument is fired, the staple-end retaining surfaces retain ends of the fired staples such that the releasable elements capture the staple ends, and the releasable elements are released from the anvil and retained with the staples after the instrument is fired. 20. The surgical stapling instrument of claim 13, wherein each releasable element comprises two pockets and two staple-end retaining surfaces. 21. The surgical stapling instrument of claim 12, further comprising: a shaft assembly connected to the end effector; and a handle connected to the shaft assembly. 22. The surgical stapling instrument of claim 21, wherein the handle comprises: a firing trigger; and a closure trigger that is separate from the firing trigger. 23. A surgical stapling instrument comprising: an end effector, wherein the end effector comprises: an anvil; and a jaw member opposing the anvil, wherein the jaw member is configured to receive a staple cartridge having a plurality of staples therein; and wherein the anvil comprises a staple forming surface facing the jaw member that comprises means for forming the staples when the staples are fired, wherein the means for forming the staples are separately releasable from the anvil.
