A hermetically sealed lamp having at least one seal-material-free bond. The seal material-free bond may be a material diffusion bond, a mechanically deformed bond such as a cold weld or crimp, a focused heat bond such as a laser bond, or any other such bond. For example, the hermetically sealed lamp may have one or more endcaps diffusion bonded to an arc envelope, such as a ceramic tube or bulb. The hermetically sealed lamp also may have one or more tubular structures, such as dosing tubes, which are mechanically closed via cold welding or crimping. Localized heating, such as the heat provided by an intense laser, also may be used to enhance any of the foregoing bonds.

The invention claimed is: 1. A lamp, comprising: an arc envelope; an end member diffusion bonded, without an intermediate seal material, directly to the arc envelope to define a hermetical seal, wherein the end member comprises a niobium base having a corrosion-resistant coating including molybdenum; a ductile dosing tube coupled to the end member to define a dosing passage into the arc envelope; and wherein a portion of the ductile dosing tube is mechanically compressed and the portion is hermetically sealed without a seal material. 2. The lamp of claim 1, wherein the ductile dosing tube is made of a molybdenum-rhenium material. 3. The lamp of claim 1, wherein the ductile dosing tube comprises a molybdenum-rhenium alloy having 35 to 55 percent weight of rhenium. 4. The lamp of claim 1, wherein the ductile dosing tube comprises a molybdenum-rhenium alloy having 44 to 48 percent weight of rhenium. 5. The lamp of claim 1, wherein the hermetical seal extends only along a planar interface between the arc envelope and the end member. 6. The lamp of claim 1, comprising a lead wire extending through the dosing passage into the arc envelope, wherein the portion of the ductile dosing tube is mechanically compressed about the lead wire, and the portion is hermetically sealed about the lead wire without the seal material. 7. The lamp of claim 6, wherein the lead wire extends completely through the ductile dosing tube along the entire length of the dosing passage. 8. The lamp of claim 6, wherein the lead wire comprises tungsten, or molybdenum, or a combination thereof, the ductile dosing tube comprises molybdenum and rhenium, and the portion of the ductile dosing tube is diffusion bonded with the lead wire. 9. The lamp of claim 8, wherein molybdenum of the lead wire is thermally diffused with molybdenum of the ductile dosing tube. 10. A lamp, comprising: a ceramic arc envelope; a cerment end member diffusion bonded, without an intermediate seal material, directly to the ceramic arc envelope to define a hermetical seal, wherein the hermetical seal comprises a ceramic material from both the ceramic arc envelope and the cerment end member; a ductile dosing tube coupled to the cerment end member to define a dosing passage into the ceramic arc envelope; and a lead wire extending through the dosing passage to an arc tip disposed inside the arc envelope, wherein a portion of the ductile dosing tube is compressed about the lead wire. 11. The lamp of claim 10, wherein the ceramic arc envelope comprises alumina and the cerment end member comprises an alumina-molybdenum cerment, wherein the ceramic arc envelope and the cerment end member are thermally diffusion bonded together via diffusion of alumina across adjacent surfaces. 12. The lamp of claim 10, wherein the ceramic arc envelope comprises alumina or yttrium-aluminum-garnet (YAG) and the cerment end member comprises a molybdenum-zirconia cerment, wherein the ceramic arc envelope and the cerment end member are thermally diffusion bonded together via diffusion of aluminum and zirconia across adjacent surfaces. 13. The lamp of claim 12, wherein the molybdenum-zirconia cerment has a composition of about 35 to 70 percent by volume of zirconia. 14. The lamp of claim 12, wherein the molybdenum-zirconia cerment has a composition of about 55 to 65 percent by volume of zirconia. 15. The lamp of claim 10, wherein the cerment end member comprises an alumina-molybdenum cerment or a molybdenum-zirconia cerment and the ductile dosing tube comprises a molybdenum rhenium alloy, wherein the cerment end member and the ductile dosing tube are thermally diffusion bonded together via molybdenum diffusion of molybdenum in adjacent portions of both the cerment end member and the ductile dosing tube. 16. The lamp of claim 10, wherein the lead wire comprises molybdenum and the ductile dosing tube comprises molybdenum-yttria or molybdenum rhenium, wherein the ductile dosing tube and the lead wire are thermally diffusion bonded together via molybdenum diffusion of molybdenum in adjacent portions of the lead wire and the ductile dosing tube. 17. The lamp of claim 10, wherein the lead wire comprises molybdenum, the cerment end member comprises an alumina-molybdenum cerment or a molybdenum-zirconia cerment, and the ductile dosing tube comprises molybdenum-yttria or molybdenum rhenium, wherein the cerment end member, the ductile dosing tube, and the lead wire are thermally diffusion bonded together via molybdenum diffusion of molybdenum in adjacent surfaces. 18. A lamp, comprising: a ceramic arc envelope; and a dosing tube coupled to the ceramic arc envelope, wherein the dosing tube has a composition of molybdenum and 35-55 percent weight of rhenium. 19. The lamp of claim 18, wherein the dosing tube is coupled to the ceramic arc envelope without an intermediate end structure. 20. The lamp of claim 18, comprising an end structure coupled to the ceramic arc envelope, the dosing tube is coupled to the end structure, and the end structure comprises an end cap or an end plug. 21. The lamp of claim 20, wherein the ceramic arc envelope comprises alumina and the end member comprises an alumina-molybdenum cerment, wherein the ceramic arc envelope and the end member are thermally diffusion bonded together via diffusion of alumina across adjacent surfaces. 22. The lamp of claim 20, wherein the ceramic arc envelope comprises alumina or yttrium-aluminum-garnet (YAG) and the end member comprises a molybdenum-zirconia cerment, wherein the ceramic arc envelope and the end member are thermally diffusion bonded together via diffusion of aluminum and zirconia across adjacent surfaces. 23. The lamp of claim 20, wherein the end member comprises an alumina-molybdenum cerment or a molybdenum-zirconia cerment, wherein the end member and the dosing tube are thermally diffusion bonded together via molybdenum diffusion of molybdenum in adjacent portions of both the end member and the dosing tube. 24. The lamp of claim 18, comprising an electrode lead wire extending through the dosing tube, wherein a portion of the dosing tube is compressed about the electrode lead wire to secure the electrode lead wire. 25. The lamp of claim 24, comprising a filler material disposed about the electrode lead wire within the dosing tube. 26. The lamp of claim 24, comprising an over wind of wire disposed about the electrode lead wire within the dosing tube. 27. A lamp, comprising: a ceramic arc envelope; and a cerment end member diffusion bonded, without an intermediate seal material, directly to the ceramic arc envelope to define a hermetical seal, wherein the hermetical seal comprises a ceramic material from both the ceramic arc envelope and the cerment end structure, the ceramic arc envelope comprises alumina or yttrium-aluminum-garnet (YAG) and the cerment end member comprises a molybdenum-zirconia cerment, and the ceramic arc envelope and the cerment end member are thermally diffusion bonded together via diffusion of aluminum and zirconia across adjacent surfaces. 28. The lamp of claim 27, comprising a ductile dosing tube coupled to the cerment end member to define a dosing passage into the ceramic arc envelope, wherein a portion of the dosing tube is compressed to seal the dosing tube. 29. A lamp, comprising: a ceramic arc envelope; an end structure coupled to the ceramic arc envelope; a dosing tube coupled to the end structure, wherein the end structure comprises an end cap or an end plug; and wherein the ceramic arc envelope comprises alumina or yttrium-aluminum-garnet (YAG) and the end member comprises a molybdenum-zirconia cerment, wherein the ceramic arc envelope and the end member are thermally diffusion bonded together via diffusion of aluminum and zirconia across adjacent surfaces. 30. The lamp of claim 29, wherein the dosing tube has a composition of molybdenum and 35-55 percent weight of rhenium.
