An exhaust gas pollution treatment device, having an inlet pipe, an outlet pipe with an exhaust path extending between the inlet pipe and the outlet pipe. A gas permeable backbone member is positioned in the exhaust path and a substantially fibrous nonwoven refractory material is disposed on the backbone.
What is claimed is: 1. A vehicle comprising an exhaust gas treatment system, comprising: an internal combustion engine defining an exhaust source; a first fluid conduit portion; a second fluid conduit portion; a gas permeable backbone member fluidically connected between the first and second condui
What is claimed is: 1. A vehicle comprising an exhaust gas treatment system, comprising: an internal combustion engine defining an exhaust source; a first fluid conduit portion; a second fluid conduit portion; a gas permeable backbone member fluidically connected between the first and second conduit portions; and a substantially fibrous nonwoven refractory material disposed on the backbone. 2. The vehicle of claim 1, wherein a catalytic material is disposed on at least some of the substantially fibrous nonwoven refractory material. 3. The vehicle according to claim 1, wherein the first fluid conduit portion is positioned inside the second fluid conduit portion and wherein the gas permeable backbone member is formed as part of the first fluid conduit portion. 4. The vehicle of claim 1, wherein the substantially fibrous nonwoven refractory material is a fluid filter. 5. The vehicle of claim 1 wherein the gas permeable backbone member is a hollow tube. 6. The vehicle of claim 1 wherein the gas permeable backbone member is a plurality of hollow tubes. 7. The vehicle of claim 1 wherein the gas permeable backbone member includes a first supporting member and a second supporting member; wherein the substantially fibrous nonwoven refractory material is disposed between the first supporting member and the second supporting member; and wherein the substantially fibrous nonwoven refractory material is connected to both the first and the second supporting members. 8. The vehicle of claim 1 wherein the substantially fibrous nonwoven refractory material includes a first layer and a second layer. 9. The vehicle of claim 8 wherein the first layer has a different fibrous composition than the second layer. 10. The vehicle of claim 8 wherein the first layer has a different density than the second layer. 11. A method for manufacturing a vehicle having an internal combustion engine, comprising: a) providing a vehicle having an internal combustion engine; b) defining an exhaust path extending between the internal combustion engine and the atmosphere; and c) placing an exhaust gas pollution treatment device in the exhaust path; wherein the exhaust gas pollution treatment device further comprises: a gas permeable backbone member positioned in the exhaust path; and a substantially fibrous nonwoven refractory material disposed on the backbone. 12. The method of claim 11 wherein a catalytic material is disposed on at least some of the substantially fibrous nonwoven refractory material. 13. The method of claim 11 wherein the gas permeable backbone member is a screen positioned to substantially intersect the exhaust path. 14. The method of claim 11 wherein the gas permeable backbone member is a plurality of screens positioned to substantially intersect the exhaust path. 15. The method of claim 11 wherein the gas permeable backbone member is a hollow tube. 16. The method of claim 11 wherein the gas permeable backbone member is a plurality of hollow tubes. 17. The method of claim 11 wherein the substantially fibrous nonwoven refractory material includes a first layer and a second layer. 18. The method of claim 17 wherein the first layer has a different fibrous composition than the second layer. 19. The method of claim 17 wherein the first layer has a different density than the second layer. 20. The method of claim 11 wherein the vehicle is a motorcycle.
