The present invention includes the use of conducting polymers as sensors in distributed sensing systems, as sensors and operating elements in multifunctional devices, and for conducting-polymer based multifunctional sensing fabrics suitable for monitoring humidity, breath, heart rate, blood (location of wounds), blood pressure, skin temperature, weight and movement, in a wearable, electronic embedded sensor system, as examples. A fabric comprising conducting polyaniline fibers that can be used to distribute energy for resistive heating as well as for sensing the fabric temperature is described as an example of a multifunctional sensing fabric.

What is claimed is: 1. Apparatus for measuring relative humidity, comprising in combination: (a) at least one first conducting polymer fiber; (b) means for measuring the electrical resistance of said at least one first conducting polymer fiber, whereby the relative humidity is determined; (c) at least one second conducting polymer fiber, said second conducting polymer fiber being isolated from changes in humidity; (d) means for measuring the resistance of said at least one second polymer fiber, whereby the temperature of said at least one second polymer fiber is determined; and (e) means for correcting said relative humidity for variations in temperature. 2. The apparatus as described in claim 1, wherein said at least one first conducting polymer and said at least one second conducting polymer comprise polyaniline. 3. The apparatus as described in claim 2, wherein said at least one polyaniline fiber is woven, knitted, stitched, or braided into a fabric comprising non-conducting fibers. 4. Apparatus for providing humidity, comprising in combination: (a) at least one conducting polymer fiber consisting of polyaniline; (b) means for applying electric current to said at least one conducting polymer fiber effective for controlling the amount of water absorbed thereon; and (c) means for measuring the resistance of said at least one polymer fiber, such that the relative humidity to which said fiber is exposed can be determined. 5. The apparatus as described in claim 4, further comprising feedback means for controlling said electric current applying means in response to the resistance measured by said resistance measuring means, whereby the relative humidity to which said conducting polymer fiber is exposed is maintained at a chosen value. 6. The apparatus as described in claim 4, wherein said polyaniline fiber is woven, knitted, stitched, or braided into a fabric comprising non-conducting fibers. 7. A method for providing humidity, comprising the steps of: (a) applying electric current to at least one conducting polymer fiber consisting of polyaniline effective for controlling the amount of water absorbed thereon; and (b) measuring the resistance of the at least one polymer fiber, such that the relative humidity to which the fiber is exposed can be determined. 8. The method as described in claim 7, further comprising the step of controlling the electric current in response to the resistance measured in said step of resistance measuring, whereby the relative humidity to which the conducting polymer fiber is exposed is maintained at a chosen value. 9. The method as described in claim 7, wherein the polyaniline fiber is woven, knitted, stitched, or braided into a fabric comprising non-conducting fibers.
