A medical valve includes a housing having an inlet end and a fluid outlet end, and a flexible elastomeric plug defining an upper face. At least a portion of the plug is moveable along the housing in response to the application of a male luer against the upper face. The plug defines an elastomeric flow path within it. The flow path defines a distal aperture. The luer displaces at least a portion of the elastomeric plug in a first direction along the housing and the displacing force distorts the plug increasing the volume of the flow path within the plug and enlarging at least a portion of the fluid flow path between the upper face of the plug and the outlet end. When the male luer is withdrawn the plug returns to its original shape and thereby elastically decreases the volume of the flow path, to cause at least a portion of residual fluid in the flow path to be expelled through the distal aperture so that at least a portion of the residual fluid within the elastomeric plug is expelled in a different direction than the direction of luer withdrawal. In one embodiment the flow path exits the plug along its lateral wall.

The method of claim 1, wherein said device includes a contact member adjacent at least a portion of said bore, wherein the elastomeric valve system defines a proximal end, a distal end, and a resting uncompressed length, and wherein, in operation, the elastomeric valve system is disposed within said housing longitudinally intermediate said displacing member and said contact member, the method further comprising the step of: advancing said displacing member against the proximal end of the elastomeric valve system to longitudinally compress the elastomeric valve system against the contact member. 3. The method of claim 2, further comprising the step of: reducing said length of the elastomeric valve system by compressing the elastomeric valve system against the contact member. 4. The method of claim 3, further comprising the step of: forcefully widening at least a portion of said elastic flow path within the elastomeric valve system while reducing said length of the elastomeric valve system. 5. The method of claim 1, wherein at least a portion of said elastic flow path comprises a closed slit and wherein the step of displacing at least said entire inlet end further includes the step of: opening said slit. 6. The method of claim 1, wherein said housing includes a distal housing end and a male luer is attached adjacent said distal housing end, the method further comprising the step of: flowing the medical fluid out said male luer. 7. The method of claim 1, wherein the step of displacing at least said entire inlet end further comprises the step of: compressing a portion of the elastomeric valve system distal to said inlet, forcibly widening at least a portion of said elastic flow path within the elastomeric valve system. 11. The method of claim 1, wherein the elastomeric valve system includes a distal portion adjacent said distal end of said bore, and the step of displacing at least said entire inlet end further comprises the step of: compressing said distal portion of the elastomeric valve system to forcibly widen a portion of said elastic flow path within said distal portion of the elastomeric valve system. 12. The method of claim 2, wherein said contact member is positioned adjacent said distal end of said bore, the method further comprising the step of: compressing the elastomeric valve system against said contact member to compress the elastomeric valve system between said displacing member and said distal end of said bore. 13. The method of claim 1, wherein said valve system comprises a piston and the step of displacing at least the entire inlet end further comprises: displacing substantially the entire piston along said bore. 14. The method of claim 1, wherein said valve system comprises an elastomeric piston with a lower portion, the lower portion being free from secure attachment with said housing, and wherein the step of displacing at least the entire inlet end further comprises: displacing the entire piston along said bore. 15.
