A device and method for lifting and transporting a conventional hay bale feeder in association with the directed movement of a round hay bale and for facilitating the placement of the feeder around the bale. The device is removably attached to the feeder and consists of a lift arm assembly, a lift arm support assembly, and an anti-slide stabilizing assembly. The lift arm assembly includes a lift arm that is angled away from the top of the feeder to provide feeder lift. The lift arm support assembly acts as a brace to support the lift arm. The anti-slide stabilizing assembly limits rearward and side to side rocking movement of the feeder when lifted and transported, respectively. In alternate embodiments, the device is integrated into circular and multi-sided feeders during manufacture, forming single stand-alone units. The method of using the device includes moving the bale toward the lift arm using a tractor or other vehicle, tilting of the feeder in an upward direction as the lift arm contacts and slides up the bale, terminating the bale movement when the lift arm rests on top of the bale, moving the hay bale in the opposite direction causing the lift arm to penetrate into the bale and pull the feeder in unison with the bale, terminating the bale movement at the feeding location, and pushing the feeder down over the bale or pushing the bale into the feeder until the feeder falls to the ground with the bale inside. Moreover, the design of the device allows the lift arm to be pivoted toward and secured to the feeder for manual rolling of the feeder in the traditional manner.

A conventional hay bale feeder adaptor device in combination with a tractor, said device for adapting a conventional hay bale feeder to be tilted and transported by the directed substantially horizontal movement of a conventional round hay bale positioned on and moved by a tractor, the device comprising: (a) a tilt ramp constructed and arranged for interacting with the hay bale, said tilt ramp having an upper end and a lower end, said tilt ramp removably connected on the outside of a hay bale feeder, said lower end being positionable adjacent to a bottom edge of the hay bale feeder, wherein a first removable connector connects said tilt ramp to the hay bale feeder at a first point located adjacent a bottom of a feeder, and said upper end of said tilt ramp extendable towards a top edge of the hay bale feeder in a spaced relationship thereto, such that said tilt ramp forms an acute angle with respect to a side of the hay bale feeder, said tilt ramp further comprising an outermost surface opposite from the feeder, said surface configured as an unobstructed inclined plane; b) a second removable connector and a third removable connector respectively removably connecting at least one brace to said tilt ramp at a second point, above said first point, and removably connecting said at least one brace to the hay bale feeder at a third point, above said first point, in said spaced relationship thereto; and (c) a fourth removable connector fixedly connecting at least one lateral stabilizing member to the hay bale feeder, the fourth connector positioned adjacent to the bottom of the hay bale feeder at a location opposite of said first point, said at least one lateral stabilizing member configured to provide spaced ground contact support to both sides of the hay bale feeder upon the feeder being tilted and when tilted about said at least one lateral stabilizing member, said at least one lateral stabilizing member further comprising at least one lateral ground engaging member configured to provide spaced ground engagement to both sides of the feeder upon tilting of the feeder about said at least one lateral stabilizing member, said at least one lateral stabilizing member limiting sliding movement of the hay bale feeder with respect to the ground when the feeder is tilted about said at least one lateral stabilizing member and permitting sliding movement with respect to the ground while limiting side to side rocking motion with respect to the ground upon transport of the hay bale feeder; wherein directing the substantially horizontal movement of the round hay bale by the tractor in a general direction against said outermost surface of said tilt ramp results in the upward sliding of said tilt ramp against the round hay bale causing an upward tilting of the hay bale feeder about said at least one lateral stabilizing member until said lower end of said tilt ramp is located on the top of the round hay bale and an engagement of said lower end of said tilt ramp with the round hay bale upon movement of the hay bale in a forward direction substantially opposite from said general direction, said engagement sufficient to permit the transport of the hay bale feeder when the round hay bale is moved in said forward direction and said lower end of said tilt ramp permitting sliding against the hay bale as the hay bale is inserted into the hay bale feeder through its bottom side. 2. The device of claim 1 further including, a structural attachment means for said tilt ramp to be removably securable to the hay bale feeder at a fourth point, above said first point and wherein: (a) said at least one brace is hingeably connectable to the hay bale feeder at said third point and removably connectable to said tilt ramp at said second point, (b) said tilt ramp is hingeably connectable to the hay bale feeder at said first point, whereby said at least one brace can be pivoted downwardly with respect to the hay bale feeder to a substantially vertical position and then said tilt ramp pivoted upwardly with respect to the hay bale feeder and securable to the hay bale feeder at said fourth point thereby, permitting the hay bale feeder to be manually lifted and rolled on its round side in the traditional manner. 3. The device of claim 1 wherein said lower end of said tilt ramp further comprises a hay bale engagement prong and said engagement prong further comprises an arcuate section configured to permit easy sliding of the hay bale feeder on the top of the round hay bale in said general direction to facilitate the subsequent placement of the hay bale inside the feeder and to optimize said engagement with the round hay bale when the round hay bale is moved in said forward direction and wherein said tilt ramp has a length such that the installed vertical height of said tilt ramp is greater than the height of the round hay bale. 4. The device of claim 1 wherein said at least one lateral stabilizing member is disposable at a position substantially on an opposite side of the feeder to said tilt ramp and said at least one stabilizing member further comprising at least one ground contacting member on each side of a line drawn from said first point through the center of the hay bale feeder and at least one unidirectional ground engaging member on each side of said line, each said at least one ground contacting member being sufficiently spaced apart from each other to limit side to side rocking of the feeder during transport and each said at least one unidirectional ground engaging member being sufficiently spaced apart from each other to prevent sliding of the feeder upon being tilted and to permit sliding of the feeder when transported. 5. The device of claim 1 wherein said first, second, third, and fourth removable connectors are selected from a group including fasteners, chains, clamps, and U-bolts.
